Happy Friday Salmon Bay Families,

As this week ends, I wanted to take a moment to once again be thankful for our wonderful educators and families. For many of us the news to return to in-person has come with mixed emotions, some scared, anxious, worried, happy, excited, and so on. As we all work together to make this heavy lift happen for our students, please give yourself and each other grace and patience. We will get through this. As a community, we will do what is best for our students and make sure we are successful in providing them social, emotional and academic supports as we take this new journey.
’ll leave you with this quote from Og Mandino, “Failure Will Never Overtake Me If My Determination To Succeed Is Strong Enough.” To remind us all that we are dedicated to the safety and success of all our staff, students, and families.

Best,
Suro

Supporting Kids Through Changes
Whether your family is opting to have your student/s return to school with a hybrid schedule or remain 100% remote, change is coming. Today, we wanted to share some quick tips for how you can support your child/ren through these changes. Remember, too, that Salmon Bay teachers and staff are intentionally preparing students for the changes through lessons, conversations and activities. We’ll do this together as a community.

  • Give a heads up: let your child know that changes are coming and share what you know. If you have a younger child, you might want to wait until you have more details about what things will look like for your child. This will give kids time to mentally adjust to the idea of the changes.

  • Answer questions: encourage your child to ask any questions they may have about the changes. It’s okay to say, “I don’t know the answer to that yet, but we’ll hopefully find out soon.” Giving as many details as possible will help your child know what to expect and calm their anxiety about a new situation.

  • Allow kids to express feelings: do a Mood Meter check in about their feelings about the changes. Likely kids will have mixed feelings – excited to see friends again but worried that school will feel different or, if they’re staying remote – comfortable that they’ll still be at home or daycare but feeling left out that they won’t be going back to school yet and some of their friends may be. For less verbal kids, invite them to draw a picture of how they’re feeling. Validate their feelings – all feelings are okay. “This is a big change for all of us. I understand why you might be feeling that way.”

  • Listen: take time to actively listen with undivided attention to your child’s feelings and questions about the changes.

  • Keep to routines: some things will be changing, but kids will find comfort in the things that remain constant. Stick to household routines and rituals (such as bedtime, playtime, family time, mealtime) as much as possible. Let kids know which things will be staying constant.

  • Maintain healthy habits as much as possible: sticking to healthy habits will allow children and families to better tolerate stress and change.  (9-11 hours of sleep per night, exercise, limits on screen time, balanced meals, etc.)

  • Encourage positive thinking and the use of healthy coping strategies: students have been learning about resiliency and perseverance and have been practicing positive self-talk. Focusing on the positives of these changes will help everyone adjust faster. Let your child know that you believe in them and that the changes may take some getting used to, but they can do it. Other coping strategies: taking deep breaths, talking to a caring adult, imagining your safe/comfy place, counting to ten, taking a break.

  • Manage your own anxiety: we adults also have big feelings about the upcoming changes, and while it’s okay to let kids know that we’re having mixed feelings, too, it won’t help them to see us fall apart. If you need to vent, do that with another adult when kids aren’t around, and use your own healthy coping strategies to manage your own anxiety.

  • Remind kids of the support they’ll have: they won’t have to do this alone. Our whole school community will be going through this transition together, and we’ll support one another through it. We can do hard things!

Rob and I are here to help you or your child/ren. Please reach out to us for specific support.

Student Learning Schedules
As a reminder, all K-5 students will have asynchronous learning next week on March 29-31 as teachers prepare to switch to in-person teaching or to teach new classes of students who will be staying remote.

New Bell times
This week, the school board approved bell times for elementary and K-8 schools. School will begin at 8 a.m. and end at 2:30 p.m. for students in both the remote and hybrid, in-person (part-time in person and part-time remote) models. This change will take place on Monday, March 29 for all elementary students (middle school schedule discussed below) and continue through the end of this school year.

We recognize that lots of changes are happening during the next few weeks and encourage you to watch your email and this newsletter for updates. We will be sharing information as soon as plans are finalized. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we work to support all students and families.

Dear Salmon Bay Community,

As we move into the spring we hope families are staying safe. FOSB is talking a lot about how we can help our community as in-person learning becomes an option. We're working with the school and parents to be a resource when the time comes. We're also thinking about next year and looking for new members to help build and grow our community next fall.

Please don't hesitate to contact us with your ideas and feedback.

Thanks

Tween/teen & Caregiver Mental Health Workshop
PNW Parent Education and the National Alliance on Mental Illness to present a second version of “Ending the Silence” on Monday, March 29, 2021 at 6:30 pm. This FREE online event is for parents/caregivers AND their tweens/teens who are in grades 6-12. The goal of this relevant and engaging presentation is to begin a larger discussion about mental health so that young people dealing with mental health conditions or simply struggling with the intense emotional burden of current events will realize they are not alone.
In this presentation, parents/caregivers and their tweens/teens will learn the early warning signs of mental health conditions and what to do if they or someone they know is showing these signs. Tweens/teens will also learn healthy coping strategies, be given the opportunity to interact with their parents/caregivers, and ask questions of people who are currently experiencing or have experienced mental health conditions. Basic information about treatments for mental health conditions will be provided. However, since NAMI Seattle presenters are not mental health professionals, they will not recommend or endorse any medications or other specific therapies.
If you are interested in attending, please register at: https://tinyurl.com/endingthesilencePNWteens
Additionally, you can pre-order a delicious family meal to enjoy during the event from The Extra Ingredient. Please click on the link titled, “March 29th PNW Parent Education Event - Pre Order”. All orders must be placed by Monday, March 22, 2021 and 20% of all proceeds will be donated to PNW Parent Education.
