12 - 16: Spring Break
Hello Salmon Bay Families,

Well, as of this Wednesday, we reached the one-year mark of remote learning. Prior to last spring, this reality would not have even entered our dreamscape. As we currently roam our halls and classrooms, artifacts of student learning remain on the walls, but student presence and the energy that follows continues to be sorely missed.

While it is entirely true that we have all done our very best given the hand dealt, we are all challenged by awaiting the return to normalcy. Lately, there's been welcomed glimpses that bring about hope and positivity. We are so very proud of this school community and what it has offered and provided for our kids. In the last year, showing up each day to support and serve Salmon Bay students, families and staff has been an honor like no other. We will be getting the band back together before too long and for that, we are grateful.

In partnership,

Darren, Neil and Suro

Thank you to everyone who was able to join us for our virtual auction last night. Together we raised over $21,000 for our fund-a-need focused on Counseling Services and Social Emotional Resources! We promised a night where just about anything could happen and it did! Here's a photo of Neil wearing his new suit (the same suit our auctioneer was wearing during the live broadcast)!
Several staff members made cameos during our SBTV pre-show including Drew, Dave and Glyde and our Drawful Team (all pictured below). Thank you for sharing your creativity and talent with our community!

One Year! Wow! It’s been exactly one year since school let out on that warm sunny March Wednesday. I will always remember that day. I was outside watching students who were full of excitement boarding buses and beginning to walk home. Little did any of us know that it would be an unforgettable year. Whether you are commemorating or commiserating this anniversary, there are some things to celebrate. I am hopeful now that so many people are being vaccinated every day and that Covid numbers have dropped. I am amazed that we have a vaccine ready to go within a year. Before I get ahead of myself, let me say, my heart goes out to everyone who has struggled and who has lost loved ones. This anniversary is making me realize once again that a joyful life takes patience and that we never really know what we have until we have some time to get perspective. As a parent, it helps me to remember that my children will be just fine, as long, as I give them my love and support. Even though they have spent the last year doing school on a screen from their bedrooms. Soon enough they will be fully functioning adults despite my poor parenting choices and this ridiculous pandemic. Be well everyone. I (Rob) look forward to seeing you in person in the future. I hope you are enjoying the longer, sunnier days.

As always if you need anything please reach out to me or Jenny.

Funds Supporting Salmon Bay Families
Salmon Bay School has limited funds available to support our families financially. If you are in need of financial support, please fill out our request form by clicking on the blue button below. Rob and Jenny are working on supporting as many families as possible during the pandemic and beyond. If you need other types of support (such as mental health or school support), please send Jenny or Rob an email and they will respond as soon as possible. You matter. You are loved. You are not alone.
Help With Technology Issues
If you need assistance with technology issues, please contact the Student Techline. The call-in service has been upgraded to allow people to either wait on hold or leave a voice mail if their call is not answered right away. Call & email volumes are much more manageable now so families should be helped very quickly. Call 206-252-0100 or email [email protected].
Thank you to everyone who participated in our auction! If you won items, we look forward to seeing you tomorrow at Auction Pick-up! We ask that all individuals wear masks and follow these guidelines:

  • If you are walking to pick up auction items, please walk on the east side of 18th (across from the school).

  • If you are driving to pick up items, please drive south on 18th. Write your bidder name on a piece of paper and place it on your dashboard. That helps us gather your items efficiently.

  • If you purchased a spot in one of our auction parties, you will be contacted by your party host as the date gets closer. No need to come to auction pick-up (unless you are picking up other items)!

If you didn't get a chance to donate to the auction last night and would like to, there is still time! Just visit FOSBAuction.org and look for the donate button. Thank you for your generosity and support!
Middle School Sports
We are anxiously awaiting news regarding spring sports. There is a possibility that sports could start at the end of March but we do not have confirmation on specific season dates. As soon as we have more information, we will be sharing it with you!

Once we have confirmation that sports can begin, your student will want to be ready to start. One important thing you can do to prepare is have your sports physical completed. The required Physical Participation Form can be found on the district website here.
Student Portraits
If your student has not yet taken their yearbook photo, please do so asap. You’ll find instructions on how to log into the School Photo Cloud site and your student’s unique photo ID number in the email Jodi sent you on March 1st. If you have questions or need assistance, please email Jodi Russell, Volunteer Coordinator.

Snow Photos Requested
We need a lot of photos to complete our yearbooks.
This week, our request is for snow photos! Remember all the snow during mid-winter break? Did you snap a photo building a snowman, sledding or playing in your yard? Submit your photos of snow fun for the yearbook. When sending pictures please include your student’s name and grade (it can be hard to tell who is who behind all the masks and snow gear!)
Elementary pictures can be emailed to Jodi.
Middle School photos can be emailed to Glyde

Community Announcements
Tween/teen & Caregiver Mental Health Workshop
PNW Parent Education and the National Alliance on Mental Illness to present a second version of “Ending the Silence” on Monday, March 29, 2021 at 6:30 pm. This FREE online event is for parents/caregivers AND their tweens/teens who are in grades 6-12. The goal of this relevant and engaging presentation is to begin a larger discussion about mental health so that young people dealing with mental health conditions or simply struggling with the intense emotional burden of current events will realize they are not alone.
In this presentation, parents/caregivers and their tweens/teens will learn the early warning signs of mental health conditions and what to do if they or someone they know is showing these signs. Tweens/teens will also learn healthy coping strategies, be given the opportunity to interact with their parents/caregivers, and ask questions of people who are currently experiencing or have experienced mental health conditions. Basic information about treatments for mental health conditions will be provided. However, since NAMI Seattle presenters are not mental health professionals, they will not recommend or endorse any medications or other specific therapies.
If you are interested in attending, please register at: https://tinyurl.com/endingthesilencePNWteens
Additionally, you can pre-order a delicious family meal to enjoy during the event from The Extra Ingredient. Please click on the link titled, “March 29th PNW Parent Education Event - Pre Order”. Science Challenge for Students in Grades 5-8
The 3M Young Scientist Challenge invites students to share their solutions for a chance to win $25,000 and an exclusive 3M Mentorship. To enter, students need to make a 1-2 minute video describing their solution for improving life in the future in one of six challenge areas. Focusing on a topic they care about, students put creative thinking and STEM brainstorming into action to think of an idea that could make a real difference in the future.

Middle School Science Teacher Monica has had previous students participate in this competition in the past. She has offered to advise any students interested in participating. Submittal deadline is late April.

Make a Video to Enter
Students do not have to build their solution or test their idea to enter. They just need to create a 1-2 minute video that describes their unique idea. Challenge Video Tips are available to help students think about and prepare their videos. Entries accepted through April 27, 2021. See the 3M Young Scientist Challenge website for complete rules and regulations.
