Happy Weekend Salmon Bay Families!

This week I was reflecting on National Reading Month and Read Across America Day/Week and the work of decolonizing and updating our classroom and main library collections. See this link for context.

In our budgeting process this year, our Building Leadership Team has identified this as an area to invest in. We are looking to put $30,000 toward modernizing and diversifying our classroom libraries and making an investment in a digital collection for our main library collection in the coming months.

Families, your support in developing a love of reading and the skills of reading is so critical. I know sometimes I get stuck thinking of stories to tell at bedtime, but I can always find a good book to involve my kiddos in. My kids love the Libby App where they can get books to read or listen to from the Seattle Public Library.

For families looking to support their early readers, this series of YouTube tips for parents is a great resource.

To reading and sharing great stories together!

Neil

The Importance of Sleep
When meeting with the 3rd graders a few weeks ago, we were talking about problems. One of the biggest problems that the kids were having was with sleep. No wonder! We’re in the midst of a global pandemic- there are many factors that could interfere with good sleep. When we don’t sleep well, it impacts our cognitive functioning, mood, ability to handle hard things (like a pandemic), and can weaken our ability to store memories and information.

If sleep is a struggle for someone in your family, here are some points to ponder:

  • Get enough natural (sun)light during the day
  • Exercise during the day, but not right before bed
  • Set your bedtime so you are getting 9-11+ hours of sleep (for kids), 7-8 hours for adults
  • Keep bedtimes and wakeup times consistent
  • Have a bedtime routine: read, wash, brush teeth, potty, snuggle
  • Stop viewing screens 2 hours before bed
  • Create a sleep-including environment, possibly do school/work in another room
  • Make sure room is cool and dark
  • Discuss worries or fears earlier in the day- not right before bed
  • If sleep issues persist, connect with your doctor

If you or your child would like support, please let us know.

2020- 2021 Yearbook Portraits
All students and parents should have received emails detailing our plan for virtual yearbook photos earlier this week. Student emails were sent to their SPS email account.

We are asking all students to take a yearbook portrait and upload it to our school Photo Cloud site by next Friday, March 12th. If you'd like more detailed instructions and tips for taking your photo, click here.

8th Grade Families
All 8th grade students have an opportunity to submit a quote and yearbook photo (in additional to their school portrait). A detailed email was sent to all 8th grade students and families yesterday. If you have questions about 8th grade yearbook submissions, please email Glyde.

Dear Salmon Bay Community -

The auction is happening right now and there are lots of creative and unique items available. Our Auction Committee did an amazing job organizing a virtual auction. Check it out and see for yourself!

At our next meeting we’ll be voting on the Whole Child Fund, the grant we give to the school to supplement programming and staff. Come ask questions and give us your input.

Finally, we’re looking for new leadership and Directors. If you know of anyone or are interested yourself, come find out what it’s all about. Salmon Bay offers lots of unique experiences for students with the support of FOSB and that doesn’t happen without parents stepping up.

Thanks,
Scott and Shawna

Science Challenge for Students in Grades 5-8
The 3M Young Scientist Challenge invites students to share their solutions for a chance to win $25,000 and an exclusive 3M Mentorship. To enter, students need to make a 1-2 minute video describing their solution for improving life in the future in one of six challenge areas. Focusing on a topic they care about, students put creative thinking and STEM brainstorming into action to think of an idea that could make a real difference in the future.

Middle School Science Teacher Monica has had previous students participate in this competition in the past. She has offered to advise any students interested in participating. Submittal deadline is late April.

Make a Video to Enter
Students do not have to build their solution or test their idea to enter. They just need to create a 1-2 minute video that describes their unique idea. Challenge Video Tips are available to help students think about and prepare their videos. Entries accepted through April 27, 2021. See the 3M Young Scientist Challenge website for complete rules and regulations.
