Hello Salmon Bay Families,

Did you know that November is a month of many things such as Veterans Days, Native American Heritage, and Gratitude? I was recently reminded by a good friend, that November is the month of gratitude. What is Gratitude you ask? “Gratitude is more than simply saying “thank you.” Gratitude's amazing powers have the ability to shift us from focusing on the negative to appreciating what is positive in our lives.” I think it’s a perfect time to think of things every one of us are grateful for.

I know with the school year well underway and conferences coming up, I am grateful for wonderful teachers who are tirelessly working to make everyday enriching for all students. I am grateful for parents who care so deeply for their kids and their education that they are doing everything to support them. I am grateful for students who come to school online everyday with excitement and love in their eyes for learning. Furthermore, I am truly grateful for a community that focuses only on the positives and ways to help support each other.

As you go into your restful weekend, take a minute and think about all the things you are grateful for. My wish for the remainder of this month, but also just in our daily life, is to please remember and practice daily gratitude for one another. Think of how such a simple shift in thought could actually help our world for the better.

In partnership,
Suro, Neil, and Darren

Friday the 13th Sing Mix-up
Sorry for the mix-up with our Friday Sing this morning! We accidentally created a Teams Meeting in addition to the Friday Sing Live Event. This led to about 100+ kiddos and families in the wrong room on a live video chat… With that said, appreciate all those who helped post the correct link and coach students over to the correct event. All of our Friday Sings are recorded and archived, so you can watch and enjoy with your family. Here is the link for this week’s if you missed it: Friday Sing November 13
Seen Online: First Grade Science
In addition to studying plant and animal structures and survival, first graders have been reading books about inspiring Black scientists like astronaut Mae Jemison, surgical technician Vivien Thomas, and mathematician Katherine Johnson. Through their stories, we’re able to learn about scientific practices they engage in across different fields and discuss their incredible accomplishments through a lens of racial justice. This week, students in Jenny’s & Gabi’s classes wrote about what they’ve learned about scientists so far.
Seen Online: After School Theatre
Thank you to everyone who was a part of After School Theatre's fall play! We had an amazing time last weekend sharing our play with friends and family.

If you're interested in getting involved with our next play or signing up for a class, email our Program Coordinator at: [email protected]. Registration will open soon for our classes in late November and December! You can also stay up to date on our programming by checking out our page on the FOSB website here.

FOSB Direct Giving Campaign
Our Parent Teacher Organization, FOSB, launched our Direct Giving Campaign this week!

Without a spring auction last year, the Direct Giving Campaign will be our main fundraiser for this school year. We’ve stretched our goal to $78,000 to meet the needs of our community including support for small group work, elementary counseling, library, PE, music and art programs, FOSB committees and scholarships.

Donations are tax deductible and simple. Donate online today OR watch for your Direct Giving pledge card in the mail, write a check payable to FOSB and mail your donation to: FOSB, Attn: Direct Giving Campaign, 1810 NW 65th ST, Seattle, WA 98117.

Many employers match employees’ charitable donations. If your employer matches your donation, they could double or triple your contribution! Our Tax ID is 91-1622350.
Fall Book Fair
It's time for our annual fall book fair in partnership with Secret Garden Books! Participants can shop online or in person at the store. Every purchase helps support our school!

Here are the details:
  • You're welcome to shop Secret Garden’s entire website and store.

  • If you don’t have an account, you may be asked to create one. PLEASE ENTER SALMONBAY INTO THE COUPON BOX AT CHECKOUT, if it isn't automatically there, so your purchase counts toward the book fair.

  • Orders should be picked up at the store or you can choose to have items shipped directly to your home. Please see shipping instructions on the website. Items ship Media Mail, which reduces shipping to $2-$3 per book.

  • Every purchase benefits the Salmon Bay Library! We receive a percentage of sales back as a commission (10 – 20% based upon total sales) so that Ben, our librarian, can purchase new materials for our school library.

Stay tuned for some book fair surprises next week! Visit the Secret Garden website for additional book recommendations. Thank you for supporting the Book Fair and our school library!
