Hello Salmon Bay Families,

It’s been a big week and next week will most likely follow suit. Seems like the election process is about to come to a close. No matter your leaning, it is imagined that we’re all hoping for the same: peace, prosperity, freedom, unity. As adults, if we continue to work together to achieve these aspirations, we can create a world in which our children can truly flourish.

To honor Veterans Day, there won’t be school next Wednesday, November 11th. In virtual classrooms across the K-8 continuum, conversations and activities will be facilitated to get students thinking and feeling about the role of veterans and the sacrifice that many have made to ensure that both local and global citizens are safe and free.

Lastly, November is Native American Heritage Month. The intention is to acknowledge and celebrate the first Americans and the land that was taken from them long ago. At Salmon Bay, we commit to extending this focus beyond the month, and strive to make our school a safe place to learn and grow for our Indigenous students.

Postcard from US HISTORY
I wish everyone could have spent a day in my shoes working with our 7th and 8th graders as they jumped into the Washington State Student Mock election work last week. After reading I Am Malala in Language Arts, the students identified and examined Malala’s values, then went on to identify values of their own. With those personal values in their tool box, the students grabbed their student voter’s guides to dig into a selection of measures, initiatives and individual races. After finding evidence in the guide both “for” and “against” each measure and applying their own personal values to help them evaluate candidate positions, they cast their” ballots.” While many students completed this work independently, or with family members, I was lucky enough to get to work in some small learnings and got to hear their discussions, see their thinking in action. The individual values they expressed gave me such hope—they were strong and sweet, personal and powerful, inclusive and openminded. I think our future is in solid, compassionate, thoughtful hands.

Counselor's Corner

Hello Salmon Bay families!
I hope that you all are making do this week. Or maybe making cookies. 😉 Either way, I know it’s been a tough week for many folks. It’s been a bit of an emotional rollercoaster for me as well. To be honest, the last nine months have been very hard on me as a parent. Having to parent two adolescent boys in such uncertain times has been testing my level of positivity. The one practice that I have used regularly for support is thinking of things that I am grateful for or making a gratitude list. As this is November now, it’s that time of year when many people reflect on what gives them deep gratitude. There is a large amount of research that shows those who reflect on gratitude or keep a gratitude journal helps them connect with others and makes them happier. You can find out more here: WHYY Segment on Gratitude You’ll be interested to know that I posted on my Schoology page this week asking students what they were grateful for and many of them said their family. 😊 Have a great weekend!

As always if you need anything please reach out to me or Jenny Brooks.
