Dear Salmon Bay Families & students,

We have officially finished the first days of school! Wow, and what a send off we had this morning with FRIDAY SING! People have told me about it, described it to me, but nothing matches what I experienced in the cafetorium! Amazing, incredible, wonderful, astounding, mind-blowing, stunning! It was all that and a bag of chips! 😊 I am so proud to be a part of such an amazing community!

Laurie Sommerville is our new Admin secretary, and she will be here on Monday!

This is the year that we have been working toward and it is going to be a great one. We will be sending our 6th graders off to camp in 12 days, it is all so surreal!

Middle schoolers have had a great week! Lockers have been assigned and students are learning their combinations to open those lockers! It takes a week or so to get good at it.  Students you will have it mastered before you know it. Schedules will be ready for Monday! Shout out to Rob Bright counselor with many hats, for completing the schedules!

Computers have been assigned! If you have a charging cord at home that was lost and is now found please send it in, we are in desperate need of charging cords we are short a good 200 plus! We thank you in advance! We really need them so we can check out computers to 3rd through 5th graders!
Middle schoolers are also learning about and preparing for Fall connections! The 3-day event is centered around learning about, honoring and celebrating our community and each of the roles we play in it!

Students will learn what Salmon Bay K-8’s role is in our international and local communities and will culminate with a field trip to Cottage Lake!
Back to Friday sing! The second graders that came up to lead us in a song were awesome! One of my favorite things is watching our students perform!

Lastly, it is great to have parents volunteering in the building! Parents signed up to help in the lunchroom and it made such a difference! Thank you!

Have a fabulous weekend and we will see you on Monday!

Ms. Dixon
Principal, Salmon Bay K-8

Class Tours
From kindergarten to middle school, students have been touring Salmon Bay, learning their away around the building and meeting staff members. This photo features Amy's first grade class in the lobby and discussing when it might be helpful to visit the school office.
Friday Sing
It was a special morning for elementary staff and families as we held our first Friday Sing of the school year. Friday Sing is a long-standing tradition at Salmon Bay. All elementary classes gather together to sing and end the week. Special shout out to Music Director, Mark Oesterle, for coordinating Friday Sing this year and to teachers Jenny M and Marian for leading a couple favorite songs!
Mark your calendars for our upcoming curriculum nights! This is an opportunity to learn more about the content areas and instructional approaches of our school and your child's teacher(s).

  • Our Elementary Curriculum Night will be held on September 29th at 6 pm.

  • Middle School Curriculum Night will be held October 13th at 7 pm.

More details will be shared with families next week.
2022/2023 Student Meals
Breakfast and Lunch this year is free of charge for students who qualify for Free and Reduced Status only. Families must apply for this status every year. The application is located on the SPS Website https://paypams.com/OnlineApp.aspx

Students who do not qualify for Free and Reduced status will be required to pay for breakfast and lunch. The cost of Breakfast is $2.25 ($2.50 for grades 6-8) which includes an entrée, milk, and fruit. The cost of Lunch is $3.25 ($3.50 for grades 6-8) which includes an entrée, vegetables, fruit, and milk. Students may also purchase a Milk only for $.50.

Families may pay for lunch the following ways:
1)     (Recommended) Go to https://paypams.com and add funds to student account(s). Families will need to reference each students’ student id # which can be found on the source or a school report card.
2)     Send a check payable to Culinary Services, to the school Attn: Culinary Services Manager. In the notes section please clearly write the entire name of the student. If a check is for multiple students in the same family, please clearly write the entire name of each student and note the amount to be added to each student account if it isn’t an even split.
3)     (Not recommended) Send a student to school with cash. Please note, change will not be given. If a student brings a $5 bill for lunch, the remaining funds will be added to the student account for future use.
If a student does not have funds for breakfast or lunch, they will not be denied a meal, we will debit their account and collect the balance later.
Orca Card Information
The district is no longer managing ORCA cards for students. Student ORCA cards issued to Seattle Public Schools students in the 2021-22 school year will continue working through 2022-23, even if there is an expiration date printed on the back.

Students who are under the age of 13, do not need to request a card as one is not required to ride public transportation. They may request one once they are 13.

Please register your ORCA card by June 30, 2023. For instructions on how to register your ORCA card, click here. It is important for students to register their ORCA card so they can request replacements in the future. The district is no longer managing replacements for students. Everything is now done through Metro directly.

Middle School Sports
Coed Ultimate Frisbee
All middle school students interested in playing ultimate frisbee this fall will meet on Salmon Bay's upper field after school on Tuesday, September 20th. We will then walk as a middle school team to Loyal Heights field. During this practice coaches will hand out paperwork and talk with players about the logistics of the season. Practice ends @ 5:30 pm. If you are picking your player up, please plan on meeting them at Loyal Heights field (75th and 20th ).

Interested players can complete this form: https://forms.gle/vnJaj7x9x1kkoZSDA

Please email your player's coach if you have any questions. Thank you for your support.

8th Grade: Coach Cody (codybean@gmail.com)

Girls Soccer
Back to school means it's also Girls Soccer Season!!!   Jai Paguirigan will coaching again, with assistance from our old friend and Salmon Bay parent/coach/FOSB leader Scott Koch and Amy Paguirigan.

If your kiddo would like to play this year, you're going to need the link to the middle school athletic forms:  https://www.seattleschools.org/departments/athletics/middle-school-forms/. Please please please please please fill those out ASAP.  Students cannot play without all the forms submitted (including a physical!).  The pdfs can be emailed to ejtelford@seattleschools.org any time - just specify your kid’s name and that they are going to be playing girls soccer.

Our practices will be after school on Mondays at Salmon Bay for mostly skill building and Thursdays at Loyal Heights playfield for mostly scrimmaging, both until 5pm.  We’ll use TeamSnap heavily and request that kids/you RSVP through the app to practices and games (and hopefully have that be as accurate as possible).

We are a no-cut school and while we won’t know if we’ll have enough kids this year for a JV team like we used to pre-pandemic, there will be no formal tryouts. There will be a meeting during lunch (12:10-12:40) next Wednesday 9/21 with Jai and Scott, location yet to be determined. We hope to start on Thursday 9/22 as our first day with a friendly scrimmage at Loyal Heights just to get the kids out and playing so we can see who and how many we have.  Kids can meet Amy Paguirigan at the Upper Field after school to leave to walk to Loyal Heights (departing at 340pm sharp).

If you have any questions, please email jai.paguirigan@gmail.com.

From the Salmon Bay Office
Attendance Procedures
If your student is going to be late or absent, please email salmonbay.attendance@seattleschools.org to notify the school. This email can be accessed by all the people in the office so your student’s attendance will be entered accurately. You can also let teachers know, but the official attendance record must be updated by office staff.

If you need to pick your student up during the day for an appointment, please call the office 5-10 minutes in advance of your arrival. That gives us enough time to call your student, have them gather belongings and walk to the office.
Required Forms
On Thursday, an email was sent to all families about required forms for the 22-23 school year as well as links to a variety of helpful resources.

As detailed in the email, ALL Families are asked to complete a FERPA form for each student. Click here for an electronic version of the FERPA form. Please return the form to the main office by September 23rd. Forms can be email to Laurie, Admin Secretary, at aljsommervill@seattleschools.org

Families should also update the Student Verification Form as needed through the Source (online) by September 30th. Parent should have received an email from the district detailing this process.

Laptop Chargers and Cases
Many laptop chargers and cases were not returned at the end of the last school year. Please look around your home and bring any lost chargers back to school. We currently do not have enough chargers for all students to receive their district laptops. It's important we collect missing chargers so we can complete our technology rollout this fall. Thank you!

Health Information
Nurse Jonas will be sending out additional health and Covid specific information next week. If you have any questions, please contact her at smjonas@seattleschools.org
What is FOSB?
Friends of Salmon Bay (FOSB) is our parent teacher organization. All parents and guardians are automatically members of FOSB. You don't need to fill out any membership paperwork or pay dues. We work in partnership with the school, but are a wholly separate non-profit organization. Our website is a great spot to get to know more about what we do. We also included a welcome letter in the electronic first day packet.

FOSB does all the things you imagine a school PTO/PTA would do from organizing teacher appreciation and community events to fundraising and advocacy. Specifically the purpose of FOSB is (from our bylaws):

a. To raise and distribute funds in ways which enrich and enhance the learning environment at the school.
b. To help educate the adults who are part of the school community on matters of interest.
c. To encourage the growth of community at the school among and between guardians and parents, educators, staff members, administrators and children.
d. To support the educators and administrators to the benefit of the children at the school.
e. To contribute the collective efforts to improve the education system in the Seattle School District and the State of Washington.
f. To foster and maintain strong connections with the communities of which the school is a part.

Consider this your invitation to jump in and get involved! We'll post FOSB updates, volunteer needs, plans, meeting dates and agendas in this newsletter each week. Continue reading to meet this year’s officers!

FOSB 2022 - 2023 Officer Introductions
Jackie Thai,
Elementary Co-Chair
Hello Salmon Bay! I am delighted to return as a Co-Chair for FOSB this year! My oldest, Eames, has spread his wings beyond his 9 years at Salmon Bay and begun High School at Ingraham while my youngest, Atticus is in 5th grade this year. So this is my 10th year as a Salmon Bay parent. I am the Head of Talent & People (Recruiting & HR) for a Real Estate/FinTech start-up here in Seattle. As a family we love to head out in our RV and explore the PNW together. I also love to read, cook, dance and have always been an organizer of people. I love working with others towards the greater good and I look forward to working alongside all of you as we work to BUILD COMMUNITY this year in support of our students, family and staff! Please reach out anytime fosbchair@gmail.com
Cailtin Collins,
Middle School Co-Chair
(to be confirmed by vote at first meeting)
I am excited to be the FOSB middle school co-chair this year. I have been part of the Salmon Bay community since the fall of 2013, when my older daughter, Cassidy Armstrong, started kindergarten in Sally Massa's class. Through the years, I have volunteered in various ways at Salmon Bay and five years ago I started substitute teaching there (I taught K-2 before I had kids). Currently, my younger daughter, Julianna Armstrong, is in 7th grade at Salmon Bay. In my free time I like to rock climb, hike, ski and read. I am looking forward to a great year!
Note: Caitlin is currently a Director and chair of our Direct Giving campaign and has stepped up to be nominated as Middle School Co-Chair this year! We will officially vote her in at our first meeting.
Melissa Carthum,
Secretary
Hi Salmon Bay community! I am so happy to continue supporting our parents, teachers, and students in my second year as Secretary of FOSB. l have two children at Salmon Bay: Julia (6th grade) and Louis (3rd grade). I teach at North Seattle College and like to knit, read, and am currently obsessed with reality dating TV shows (thanks pandemic!).
Brian LeBlanc,
Elementary Treasurer
Hello! My name is Brian and I am honored to be the FOSB Co- Treasurer (Elementary) along with Samsy Martin-Gray for the 2022-23 school year. My daughter, Nissa, is in the third grade. This is my second year as Co-Treasurer. Last year, we were successful in our goals to make the budget and the process about how it is built more transparent and understandable for all parents. This year, we want to inspire more parents to get involved with creating the budget, ensure that all students have access once again to activities, and set up a firm financial foundation for the years to come. In my spare time, I like to write and go hiking with my family. If you have any questions, please contact the Treasurers at fosbtreasurer@gmail.com. Thanks!
Samsy (Samsara) Martin-Gray,
Middle School Treasurer
My name is Samsara but you can call me Samsy or Sam, I'll answer to all three! I have a 6th grader, Max, an 8th grader, Maddie, and a Ballard High 11th grader, Colin, who is a SB alum. I am excited to continue to co-chair the treasurer position with Brian. If I have any spare time I spend it geocaching or traveling the world.
