Virtual Staff Meeting
We are all trying to settle into a new routine for homeroom meetings and online lessons. That's true of staff too. These screen shorts are from our virtual staff meeting this past week. When we all attend, it takes three screens (or more) for everyone to fit!

Newsies Rehearsals
Middle school students have been continuing their rehearsals online too! This screen shot is from Newsies rehearsal yesterday! Director, Glyde, shared that the students have not missed a single day of practice. The desire to continue practicing was an effort led by students and has been a great connecting point for all involved. They are hoping to create a future virtual performance! We'll share details when logistics are set.

Also, 15 kids showed up to the Theatre Tech optional office hours on  Thursday and have signed up to be part of the Newsie Design Team, so that class is also excited to be engaged in the production too!

Pet Weasel Needed

Anyone have a pet weasel?
Seriously - we could use a pet weasel for a cameo role in a music video for Newsies.
A ferret or sugar baby would do.
(Or a ferret-like cat that's willing to wear a costume?)

Please let us know.
Thanks so much,
Glyde & the Newsies

Librarian's Corner

Dear Salmon Bay community,

April is National Poetry Month, a wonderful time to read, write, and share poetry.  I'll start by sharing a haiku of my own:

Dim morning kitchen
Peanut butter and jelly
for this teacher's lunch

Teachers and families might find this list of ways to celebrate poetry useful:

Finally, here is a link to my new life skills video, "How to Make Broccoli Surprise".

Please feel free to email me if you need any help accessing online learning resources.

Take care,
Teacher Ben

Friday Sing

Friday Sing
A team of teachers have been preparing a Friday Sing slideshow for families each week. This was initially distributed to elementary families but we are expanding to share the slideshow with all Salmon Bay Families. Note, that this is not actually a "live" event. You can choose anytime to sing together!

Possible Instructions after you click on the link:

1. If the slideshow does not open to a full screen slideshow, choose Slideshow > From Beginning.

2. You may also have to close the messages across the top.

3. The sound should start playing on its own for each slide that has sound. But you might have to click on the 3 dots (if you don't see them, hover over the speaker icon) and then Play if it doesn't.

4. If a slide doesn't seem to be changing in a reasonable amount of time, just tap the down arrow key or swipe on a touch screen.

PE Challenge
Hello families!
I hope you had a chance to check out the links that I put in the last bulletin.  Those resources are going to continue to be available, so please, continue to use them if you found joy!!!   From now on, I am going to post a weekly challenge here for you and your family to complete.

This week's challenge is a whole body muscle workout.
I challenge you to set a goal for yourself on how many days you are going to complete this workout.  There are also 3 levels to choose from.  So choose your level, set a number of days goal and GO!!!!

My recommendation is (at your choice of level) to complete this at least 4/7 days this week!  Have fun!

From Admin
Hello Salmon Bay Families,

This is really hard. Please pardon me as I repeat myself, this is really hard. Now all together on the count of three, 1...2...3, this is really hard. No matter who you are, where you are, your age or income, this current situation hasn't spared anyone entirely. That said, as I sit on my comfortable couch with my good health, basic needs well met, loving family and fixed income, I know that this hasn't affected me as negatively as many others in the world.

This week, we all learned that school as we know it is no longer occurring for the duration of the school year. Ever since, many of my thoughts and feelings have been centered around the experience of loss and drastic change. Kids' lives have been completely uprooted and this is an indelible memory that none of us would have wanted them to possess. Parents have now been assigned to juggle even a greater number of complexities: childcare, home education, jobs, etc. I imagine that many of you would have preferred to learn how to juggle fiery chainsaws if given the option. All that said, this is our reality and we're all in it together. I really believe and feel that.

In the next couple of weeks, I'll be creating and posting a video for kids entitled "A Formula for Success in the Times of Quarantine". The formula has three components: safety, belonging, mastery. In all times but especially these, kids need to be and feel safe. This is our top priority and provision as parents and educators. Once safety has been achieved, kids need to maintain a sense of belonging. It's especially important now that kids have multiple contact and connection points: home, school, extended family, friends, community. Lastly, kids need to develop a sense of mastery. I encourage all kids to follow their passion and become experts at something during this time away. More on this later.

Although it seems almost farcical, next week is Spring Break. As we're all Staying Home to Stay Healthy, I'll pose a challenge to kids and families if you so choose to accept it. If you could take any trip to any place on the planet, where would you go and why? What would you most like to do or see? Who would you most like to go with and meet while there? As I would love to hear about your adventures, please feel free to send me a photo of a drawing or a written account of your trip. Remember, wherever you go, wash your hands and don't touch anything especially your face.

In partnership,

Darren

Counselor's Corner

Salmon Bay Community,

I have had many families reach out in the last few weeks worried about new emotions happening at home and wondering how to best help their kids. This is all so hard for many of us- kids and adults alike. We're feeling the whole range of emotions- lots of sadness, anger, frustration, fear, surprise, but also some joy. We are mourning and some of us are experiencing trauma. We are going through a time that is bringing new challenges as well as new opportunities. As we enter into Spring Break, I hope you're able to find some new opportunities for you and your family. Do things that bring you joy. Reach out and connect. Be outside. Create something with your hands. Search for peace. Practice gratitude. Help others. We are a strong community and we will get through this. You are not alone.

Here is a great brain science video titled: Why We Lose Control of Our Emotions by Kids Want to Know

Most Salmon Bay adults are around next week even though it's Spring Break. If you need help, please reach out to one of us and we will do our best to support your family.

Much love,

Elementary News

Learning takes place in many different ways, whether as part of a class lesson or a family project. We loved hearing about the many different activities, lessons and projects taking place within our community this past week. Here are just two examples.

One of our fourth grade families recently decided to write letters to a nursing facility in the hopes of lifting residents' spirits. We love this opportunity for connection within individual families as well as the greater community.

Xena's class is working on a poetry unit! We hope to see some of their work in our school poetry anthology (see the poetry month section below for information about this new opportunity). This beautiful poem was written by Fabienne and seemed perfect for the sunshine today.

April is Poetry Month

Submit a Poem to 'Salmon Bay Stays Home'
April is National Poetry Month, and staying home is a great time to discover new poets, read some old favorites, and most of all...  WRITE your own poetry.  We are living through something unlike anything we've ever experienced before, and creative writing can be a great way to help small people process some big and confusing feelings.  Salmon Bay has a tradition of celebrating poetry every Spring, and this year may look different, but we are still celebrating.  ALL students are invited and encouraged to submit an original poem to the "Salmon Bay Stays Home" Poetry Anthology -  poems can be of any length, on any topic, in any style.  The only 'rule' is that it must be an original poem by a current Salmon Bay student.

Typed poems should be submitted by May 15th to [email protected] .  Please specify your student's full name as you want it listed and their current grade.   Please make sure your student proofreads; poems will be published as submitted.   Poems will compiled into a published anthology that will be available to families in June.

Poetry Night - April 28th
We are currently planning for our first virtual Poetry Night!
Although it will look a little different than years past, we will still be able to come together (likely through the MS Teams platform) to share some of our favorite poems. We'll share more details after we return from Spring Break about how to access this event and how to sign up to read/share a poem.  For now, mark your calendar for Tuesday, April 28th and start writing or reading some poetry!
