Letter from Luna

Dear kids,

Last week was Spring Break, and I know most of us were trapped in our houses!  I had really been looking forward to going to the Spa in the desert for a luxurious vacation.  A lizard really needs some self-care when she lives in a school with hundreds of kids who all want to touch her!  I was pretty sad about missing my spa trip, but then Xena made the bathroom into a spa!  It was amazing.  She turned on the shower and I had a steam, I had a delightful soak in the "hot tub" (the bathroom sink,) then she wrapped me up in a fluffy towel for a massage and a pedicure.  It was very relaxing.  I could almost imagine that I was at my desert Spa!  I definitely recommend taking an imaginary vacation.  Now if you'll excuse me, I have some meal worms to eat.

Love,

Luna

Friday Sing

Friday Sing
A team of teachers have been preparing a Friday Sing slideshow for families each week. This was initially distributed to elementary families but we are expanding to share the slideshow with all Salmon Bay Families. Note, that this is not actually a "live" event. You can choose anytime to sing together!

Possible Instructions after you click on the link:

1. If the slideshow does not open to a full screen slideshow, choose Slideshow > From Beginning.

2. You may also have to close the messages across the top.

3. The sound should start playing on its own for each slide that has sound. But you might have to click on the 3 dots (if you don't see them, hover over the speaker icon) and then Play if it doesn't.

4. If a slide doesn't seem to be changing in a reasonable amount of time, just tap the down arrow key or swipe on a touch screen.

FOSB News & Events

Friends of Salmon Bay (FOSB) is our school
parent teacher organization.

I asked my daughter if she could get back to school what she'd want to do the most. She said she'd want to go to camp. I agreed, I'd love to go on a camp adventure with friends from school right now. Experiential learning is one of the things we love most about Salmon Bay. It's also one of the things that requires a lot of help from parents. Not only as chaperones but also organizing and funding via FOSB.

We have several positions that need filling next year. We'd love to get people in place soon so we can make a smooth transition into next year given the unusual circumstances. It is always intimidating to make a commitment but the benefits to community and to yourself are well worth it. Please seriously consider joining FOSB next year.

We are looking for parents to join as FOSB directors (board members) and officers:
  • Co-Chair
  • Secretary
  • Assistant Treasurer
Click here to learn more about joining the FOSB Board.

Join us Thursday, May 14 at 7 p.m
for our annual membership meeting.
Check future editions of the Weekly Bulletin for Zoom log-in information.

My recommendation is (at your choice of level) to complete this at least 4/7 days this week!  Have fun!

Counselor's Corner

Dear Families,

This is a really hard time for many of us.  If you are ready for some parenting resources, here are some that might be helpful:

Coping with COVID with Dr. Marc Brackett- Dr. Brackett is the founder of RULER, which is a social emotional program out of Yale that we use in Seattle School District.  This is a 30 minute webinar about dealing with the emotional challenges during this time.  The webinar is meant for adults.   Love and Logic Parenting Online - Currently free until the end of April

If you would like more resources, please reach out.  Rob and I have a lot of resources and are being cautious not to overwhelm you with too much information.  Your counseling team is here to support you and your family.

Much love,
Jenny B

Coping with Grief
Grief. That is what I've been thinking about lately. How are we all grieving? Because there's no doubt, we are all grieving. Grieving the loss of our old lives. For right now. For right now, we must stay home and not go to school or go to work (unless you are one of the heroes working at a hospital, grocery store, delivery, etc.) and not go out to eat or not go browse the toy/record/clothing store. For that we are grieving. I'm thinking about grief not because it's a bad thing but because it's something that we are all experiencing together. And I want to normalize that. I think it's important to normalize how we all may be feeling. And it's normal to be needing to talk to people about this. It's normal to feel sad. It's normal to feel grief. It's normal to be experiencing all five stages of grief these days.

I had a friend, recently, tell me that he broke down and cried because his cat has not been home for five days. He is a guy who weighs 200 plus pounds and rides motorcycles. He's a tough guy. He broke down and cried, actually went down on the floor, on his hands and knees, and cried because his cat has been gone for five days. He said to me "I'm usually not one to do that. I don't cry a lot. I wonder was it just about the cat or is it about what we're all collectively going through right now?"  This is a tough time so let's all acknowledge that, have compassion for everyone around us and be open to talking about our grief.  I hope that you all are well. Please take care of yourself. Here is a video, on the School Counselors at Salmon Bay YouTube page, that has great self-care strategies from the work of Dr. DeCano and Dr. Cook at the University of Washington:   https://youtu.be/zryza7w-4ys

If you need anything don't hesitate to reach out to me, Rob, or Jenny Brooks. We love our Salmon Bay Community!

High School Registration
Hello 8th grade families! By this week you should have received an email from your 8th grader's assigned high school for next year. All Seattle School District high schools have sent out registration materials either this week or last. Please look for that email and make sure to help your soon-to-be Freshman register for their classes, if you have not done so already. If you have not received registration materials or have questions please check the high school's website for more information or contact counselor Rob Bright at

April is Poetry Month

Submit a Poem to 'Salmon Bay Stays Home'
April is National Poetry Month, and staying home is a great time to discover new poets, read some old favorites, and most of all...  WRITE your own poetry.  We are living through something unlike anything we've ever experienced before, and creative writing can be a great way to help small people process some big and confusing feelings.  Salmon Bay has a tradition of celebrating poetry every Spring, and this year may look different, but we are still celebrating.  ALL students are invited and encouraged to submit an original poem to the "Salmon Bay Stays Home" Poetry Anthology -  poems can be of any length, on any topic, in any style.  The only 'rule' is that it must be an original poem by a current Salmon Bay student.

Typed poems should be submitted by May 15th to [email protected] .  Please specify your student's full name as you want it listed and their current grade.   Please make sure your student proofreads; poems will be published as submitted.   Poems will compiled into a published anthology that will be available to families in June.
