Online Learning: Life Skills with Librarian Ben
Families were treated to the first life skills video from Teacher Ben, our librarian, earlier this week.  The video received rave reviews and even prompted some great bathroom cleaning! If you missed Episode 1 - Polish Your Mirror, be sure to click the link below:

Life Skills Learning Continues
Just in time for our newsletter, Ben has released Episode 2 - Face Your Fears (of Cleaning the Toliet). Click here to see the video!

Librarian's Corner

Hello families,

1) I understand there have had some challenges logging in to SPS online resources.  Here is a h andy video explaining the basics of accessing SPS online resources.

One important bit of information mentioned in the video is that certain online resources require login information beyond the student's personal username and password.  Our generic login information for such resources is username: "studentsps", password: "access".  This will allow to access Math in Focus, Britannica, and more.

2) Did you know you can access LOTS AND LOTS of e-books and audio books through Seattle Public Library? In the menu of student resources on the SPS homepage, use the app that looks like the graphic shown here.

All middle school students have a digital public library card (this means no fines!)
  • Their library card number is 990000[student ID]
  • Example: If student ID # is 1234567, library card is 9900001234567
  • Students can find their student ID on The Source
  • Their pin is their birth date in 4 numbers - MMDD
  • Example: February 4 = 0204
All Seattle families can use their phone number to create an account, if you don't already have a library card number or a middle schooler! There are sometimes weird challenges getting signed up, so if you've tried to get signed up and can't figure it out, please just email me and I'll get back to you ASAP.

3) Finally, here is another life skills video for students: Face Your Fears (of Cleaning the Toilet).

Take care,
Ben

FOSB News & Events

Friends of Salmon Bay (FOSB) is our school
parent teacher organization.

We hope everyone is in good health and has been adapting to these challenging times. A lot of things have been canceled or delayed, so there's lots to discuss this month. We are going to hold a virtual FOSB Meeting next Thursday, April 9th from 7-8:30 pm on Zoom, see details below. We hope you'll join us!

Agenda Items
We'll try to follow our normal agenda then circle back to items that need further discussion. Items on our agenda include:
  • We are looking for parents to join the FOSB board for next year, including positions of Co-Chair, Secretary and Assistant Treasurer.  Please help us create a strong team to guide FOSB next year. All current officers have committed to staying on as needed during the COVID closure, so new officers and directors will have lots of help and support. Please contact the co-chairs for more information.

  • With the postponement of the auction, we need to revisit our budget for next year. We'll have some general budget information available at our meeting and share a planning timeline as we look toward the end of the year.

  • If you have question for FOSB or the admin team please send it to us ahead of time and we'll do our best to have an answer ready. We can be reached at [email protected].

  • Many committees have had to cancel events. Help us brainstorm ways we can honor our community and make connections during this time.
Meeting Information
April 9, 2020
7-8:30 pm
Meeting Tips:
  • Please mute yourself when you enter the meeting.
  • If you have a question, use the chat function to send it to the group. The chairs will monitor questions that pop up.
  • This is our first virtual FOSB meeting so bear with us as we may have some technical difficulties to iron out.
  • It's been noticed that performance is a little better if you don't share your camera.
  • You can use both a web client (no software to download) or download the Zoom application. If you use the web client, click the "join from browser" link from the URL above. You don't need an account to attend.
  • Click here for zoom meeting help.
Please let us know if you have any questions.
Thanks,

From Admin

Dear Families,

We continue to be proud and impressed by the many ways this community is rallying to support students and families. Collectively we have provided support to families in need, created online classroom connections, become amateur videographers and increased our virtual meeting skills tenfold. It's been a tremendous amount of change and we are grateful for your presence as we navigate these unchartered waters together.

This week, staff have been working to transition classes to remote learning. We know some of our first attempts have not been as smooth as we would like, but we have continued working with the hopes of providing you a more streamlined plan for the weeks ahead. Elementary families, you will be hearing directly from classroom teachers regarding meeting times, academic lessons and enrichment opportunities. Middle school families, you will receive an email by Sunday morning, with a schedule and structure for supporting each of the core subjects with small learning groups/faculty check-ins beginning on Monday.

As we put a new structure in place, we hope to be able to share weekly lesson updates on our website. We also plan to post resources like the Friday Sing Slideshow for all to enjoy. (If you didn't see the Friday Sing slideshow for today, click here)

A few families have asked about spring break. Spring Break, April 13 - 17th, will be observed as originally scheduled and staff will not be sharing new lessons that week.

Please continue to reach out if we can provide support to your family.

In partnership,
Annie, Darren and Neil

Counselor's Corner

Hello Salmon Bay Families!

How is it going? Okay? Weird? Strange? Different? Difficult? Yeah, me too. (Rob here). I hope that you and your family are doing well during this surreal, stressful and unprecedented time.

I wanted to write to let you know that Jenny and I are thinking about all in our community at this time.  For me, it's been a lot to wade through each week. With two middle schoolers here at home, it's been hard to navigate the daily routine and what should get done. The tips from our SB community on the Facebook page have been very helpful.  I've had to practice a lot of deep breathing and calming strategies. I have been meditating every morning. I need to do that as much as I need to go running or get some form of exercise daily. I have been cooking, baking, and reaching out to old friends and family members. I try to keep my sense of humor, listen to music that brings me back to happier times, and I try to be flexible with what I expect from my boys. Also, I have made a real effort to try to stay away from my social media feeds and watching the news. When I do all those things my stress level goes down and my serenity goes up.

As this is difficult for all of us, I want to remind everyone that whatever your children are feeling these days it's all in the normal range. Just remember to honor and validate their feelings. Practicing loving kindness and compassion for everyone, especially those with whom we share close quarters, is vital.  Being flexible with how we schedule our children's time is important. As most of you know by now, having power struggles and fights over the schoolwork is not going to be beneficial for anyone.  Working side by side with your student to determine the best way forward is a good practice, especially with our older ones. If you need any support with mental health resources you can look here: Mental Health Resources (SPS Coordinated Health)

Jenny and I are super appreciative of all the support that has been given by Salmon Bay families to help other families who are struggling to put food on the table and make ends meet. We have had donated hundreds of dollars in gift cards and Venmo to help some in our community pay bills. Thanks to those of you who have contributed. As this is a marathon we are running, we are not sure we can meet all families' needs.  For those families who need more support please refer to the SPS Resource webpage: SPS Coronavirus Resource Page

Everyone please stay healthy, practice social distancing out in public, and wash your hands!

Much love,

Rob and Jenny
