WEP Day 1
There was quite a bit of excitement in the hallways this morning as we kicked off our first week of WEP. Middle school students ventured out into the community and surrounding area. Elementary students were treated to a morning assembly featuring Gansango Music & Dance. Elementary classes also had a chance to attend dance workshops throughout the day.
Our MS WEP Tour of Seattle (group A) spent the day at the Museum of Flight. They had a blast on their mission to Mars!
We'll do our best to highlight a number of WEP activities during the next 6 weeks for both elementary and middle school students.

The Odd-yssey is coming to Salmon Bay!

This ancient story, originally written by the bard known as Homer, has been adapted by middle-school students to include maximum humor and motion, with a minimum sitting around and talking. In his long and winding journey home, Odysseus fights demons, cyclops, gods and goddesses, his own men, the winds, some cows and pigs, and various other obstacles as he tries to make it home to his faithful wife and son.
Come journey with us back to the time of Gods and Monsters.

BLM at School T-Shirt Sale
The Equity, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI) committee is organizing a Black Lives Matter t-shirt sale. EDI is offering two designs, the new Black Lives Matter at School 2020 shirt design and the Salmon Bay BLM design which we have offered in the past.
The deadline for ordering is next Thursday, January 16th. Shirts will be received by the first week in February, just in time for Black Lives Matter at School Week of Action.

Sensory-Friendly Theater Performance
STG presents has scheduled a sensory-friendly performance of Disney's FROZEN!

Slight adjustments to lighting and sound will be made for the performance. In the downstairs theatre lobby and on each floor there will be a break area staffed by specialists in the field, if anyone needs to leave his or her seats during the show.

BHS Performing Arts 61st Annual Spaghetti Dinner

BHS Gymnastics Camp

Baking Classes for Kids
Does your kid love baking? grettie's goodies, a local Ballard business, is teaching after school baking classes for 6th-8th graders this year. Located on 85th St and 22nd Ave NW in Loyal Heights Ballard, classes are Friday's after school until 6:40pm. Classes available now through March 27th and again from April 24th through June 12th. New After School Volunteer Daily Host Program
 We would like to recruit 5 volunteers, one for each day of the week, to be onsite during after school programs.
This parent
volunteer will receive a $50 discount
towards a class of their choice. As a daily host, the volunteer will touch base with all after school class instructors offering classes that day. Daily After School Program Hosts will assist with any attendance issues, help problem-solve and be a second pair of hands should a need arise. Help Needed for School Tours
The school tour season is upon us! Salmon Bay will host daytime tours for prospective families on January 14th (next Tuesday!) and January 23rd. Elementary tours begin at 10 am. Middle school tours begin at 9:15 am.

Personal Self-Defense for 4-6th grade Students

Children just before their tween years are beginning to seek some independence. They may be staying home alone (or with younger siblings) for longer periods of time, babysit, walking to a friend's house or to school, or riding the bus with buddies. They are dipping their toes in the water, at times without direct adult supervision. They are likely more afraid of "stranger danger" than acquaintance assault, although the latter is far, far more prevalent. They could use some skills to help make up for the experience they don't yet have. In this class, they will learn to recognize "red flags" that someone may mean harm, plan safe exits from iffy situation, practice physical moves (just in case), and learn to find supportive self-care. All in age-appropriate language and concepts.
This is a parent and child class

| Open Enrollment & School Choice |
Open Enrollment for School Choice Feb. 3 - 14th
Each student in Seattle Public Schools is assigned to a school based on where that student lives. Students may apply to attend a different school through the School Choice Process, which begins February 3, 2020.
If your student is currently attending an option school or another school that is not their attendance area school by choice, they can continue at this school until the highest grade offered without having to apply again. If your student is currently attending an option school but wishes to attend a neighborhood school in 2020-21, they will need to apply through the School Choice process.
Applying for Another School
If you are interested in requesting either an attendance area school or option school, other than your assigned school, you must submit a School Choice form. Only forms submitted during Open Enrollment Feb. 3 - 14, will receive tiebreakers such as the sibling tiebreaker which gives siblings priority in admissions.
Families are encouraged to apply during the Open Enrollment window. Applications received after Open Enrollment are date stamped and priority is based on the date in which the application is received. School Choice forms are available online during the Open Enrollment window, or at the John Stanford Center.
The results of Open Enrollment for the 2020-21 school year will be available online in April.

Girls on the Run
We are excited to announce that Salmon Bay will be having a Girls on the Run (GOTR) team again this year! GOTR is an after-school program that uses the power of running to give girls the tools to celebrate their bodies, honor their voices, recognize their gifts and activate their power! 3rd-5th grade girls come together twice a week to learn new skills, celebrate girl empowerment, and train to run a non-competitive 5K at the end of the ten-week season.
The girls will be coached by teachers Talia and Gabrielle, as well as Amy Paguirian, a Salmon Bay parent. Practices will be held twice a week, on Mondays and Thursdays, from 3:30-5:00 pm. The season starts on March 2nd and runs for ten weeks, with the 5K being held on Sunday, May 17th at Renton Memorial Stadium. Registration opens on January 10th, 2019 at 9am and will be a lottery period until January 24th at 5pm. After January 24th, registration will be first-come, first-served, to fill any remaining spots up to a maximum of 15 girls.

You can also purchase a book online through SchoolPay by navigating to the FOSB page (nonprofit group page) where after school activity payments are also collected. Once paid, pick up your book or ask Jodi to send it home in your student's backpack.
