We were impressed with all of our Geo Bee contestants this week - great job! And a special congratulations to our School Geo Bee Champion, Josh Melton (pictured below).
6th Grade + Elementary Buddies
Ticely's 6th grade homeroom has been enjoying their partnership with Jenny's first grade class. The 6th graders meet every week with their first grade buddies to draw, write and play. Yesterday, 6th graders gave their buddies hand made holiday cards, candy canes and participated in some epic fun in PE with Mr. G.

Angst: Raising Awareness Around Anxiety
Join teachers, families, and experts for a screening of the documentary, "
Angst: Raising Awareness Around Anxiety". On January 9, 6:30-8:30pm at Greenwood Elementary, 144 NW 80th, Seattle Public Schools and
IndiFlix will partner to raise awareness around anxiety. The 56-minute film, appropriate for ages 10 and up, will be followed by a panel discussion about school and local supports for students and families struggling with anxiety.

Seattle Celtic Soccer Spring Registration Open
Seattle Celtic will be holding spring season tryouts in early January. Celtic have teams at all levels for players born between 2002 and 2013 and a coaching staff with the perfect mix of energy, passion and expertise to help players develop and excel in a fun environment.

Find your inner Samurai!
Beginner kendo class (Japanese fencing) is starting January 9th at Bitter Lake Community Center. Kendo is the sword training used by samurai and the inspiration for Star Wars. This is a martial art for kids and adults alike! Ages 8 and up, Thursdays, 7:00-8:30 pm. Is there someone in your family interested in learning to play the piano? My kids have moved on to other interests, and I'd like our upright piano to go to a good home. It's in great condition. Babysitter Training

Learn about infant and child care, age appropriate toys, safety and injury prevention and how to handle emergencies. Find out what parents expect and practice hands-on skills. Includes in-depth coverage of First Aid, Infant/Child CPR, and how to be safe at home alone while sitting. Instructor Ken Norris, a 26-year veteran of the Seattle Fire Department, has taught CPR for 15 years.

Free seminar - Mental Health and Our Kids

Join PNW Parent Education for a critical conversation on mental health and our kids. Jason Reid, CEO, author, and parent, will share his story of heartbreak and hope. Learn practical and relevant information on how parents can help promote mental health in their children at an early age. Lastly, a local youth will share their personal experience and the tools that they use to help fight the stigma and symptoms associated with anxiety and depression.

Sensory-Friendly Theater Performance
STG presents has scheduled a sensory-friendly performance of Disney's FROZEN!
Saturday, February 22, 2020 at 2:00 pm at
The Paramount Theatre in Seattle.
Slight adjustments to lighting and sound will be made for the performance. In the downstairs theatre lobby and on each floor there will be a break area staffed by specialists in the field, if anyone needs to leave his or her seats during the show.

BHS Gymnastics Camp
The Ballard High School gymnastics team welcomes your child to our 2020 kids camps! BHS gymnasts will teach campers on bars, beam, vault, and floor for hours of fun and instruction.

| Extreme Reading Challenge |
Dear Salmon Bay School Community,
We would love for all students and staff to participate in the Extreme Reading Challenge during Winter Break. We'd like each person to get photo of themself reading, especially in an unusual place or during an unusual activity. Reading in a tree? Great! Reading while going down a slide? Amazing! Reading while standing on your head and brushing your teeth in a snowstorm? Even better! Check out the examples below from Madison Middle School.
You can email photos to Librarian Ben and/or post them on the Salmon Bay School Community Facebook page.
In January, we'll share some of our favorite photos and give some awards, such as "Funniest Photo" and "Most Creative".

Happy Winter Solstice!
This is the week to celebrate the shortest day of the year. Not that there are less than 24 hours on that day, but that we have the fewest hours of daylight. So, let's call it the longest night of the year. I love this time of year because it means that getting into my pajamas right after cleaning up the dinner dishes feels like the right thing to do. With the sun setting so early, even before most of us get home from work, life can feel even more exhausting when trying to get everything done. The "to-do" list is never ending as a parent. Am I right? Well, now is the time of year to hunker down with those we love and care for to celebrate the holidays AND celebrate the return of the sun. Sunlight will become more prevalent (with clouds in front of it) starting on December 21 at 8:19 p.m. (pacific time) in the northern hemisphere. Please enjoy your time with family and friends this holiday season and rest assured that the sun will grace us more and more each day. That is something to celebrate, for sure! (Rob)

Girls on the Run
We are excited to announce that Salmon Bay will be having a Girls on the Run (GOTR) team again this year! GOTR is an after-school program that uses the power of running to give girls the tools to celebrate their bodies, honor their voices, recognize their gifts and activate their power! 3rd-5th grade girls come together twice a week to learn new skills, celebrate girl empowerment, and train to run a non-competitive 5K at the end of the ten-week season.
The girls will be coached by teachers Talia and Gabrielle, as well as Amy Paguirian, a Salmon Bay parent. Practices will be held twice a week, on Mondays and Thursdays, from 3:30-5:00 pm. The season starts on March 2nd and runs for ten weeks, with the 5K being held on Sunday, May 17th at Renton Memorial Stadium. Registration opens on January 10th, 2019 at 9am and will be a lottery period until January 24th at 5pm. After January 24th, registration will be first-come, first-served, to fill any remaining spots up to a maximum of 15 girls.
