Gratitude
A group of 3rd-5th graders meet for lunch on Tuesdays and call themselves the Spicy Changers.  They are learning about gratitude and are carrying out several modes of showing appreciation of people, experiences, and other things in their lives.  A gratitude bulletin board has been created outside the front door of the Library. Staff and students are invited to add gratitude messages to this board. Supplies can be found on the table outside Jenny B's office.

Afterschool Programs
The Afterschool Program Needs YOU!
As you know, we have a vibrant after school program, with over 14 offerings for our students, ranging from woodworking, cooking, arts and crafts, to unicycles with Mr. G.  Many families rely on these convenient and unique classes for extra childcare and enrichment.  We've been lucky to have many talented, hard-working volunteers over the years build this program to where it is, and we're over-the-moon with gratitude for all they've done.

WE NEED YOU!  Unfortunately, many of our amazing committee members will need to step down from their roles soon.  We need new, enthusiastic volunteers to administer the program to keep it going.  Ample assistance will be available from Jodi, the FOSB chairs, and past committee members.

If you love this program and want to see it thrive and continue, we would love your support!  Please contact Laura Feola at or Scott Koch, FOSB chairs, at  [email protected] for more information and details.  This is just one of the many great things volunteers make happen for our kids - thank you for considering!

Park Pass for 4th Grade Students
The Every Kid Outdoors Program is an interagency collaboration between the Department of the Interior, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and U.S. Forest Service that provides fourth graders with free access to explore, learn, and recreate in spectacular settings, including national parks, wildlife refuges, marine sanctuaries, and forests, along with their families, classmates, and friends. The program replaces Every Kid in a Park, and is authorized for seven years.

The program focuses on children ten years of age (the age of most fourth graders) and is based on research that indicates such children are at a unique developmental stage in their learning where they are more receptive to engaging with nature and the environment. By focusing on this age group year after year, the program aims to ensure every child in the United States has the opportunity to visit their national parks by the time he or she is eleven years old, thereby establishing a lifelong connection to enjoy and protect our American outdoor heritage.

To obtain the free pass, fourth grade students can visit the Every Kid Outdoors website, participate in a short educational activity, and download and print a paper voucher. The voucher is valid for multiple uses between Sept. 1, 2019 and Aug. 31, 2020.

Direct Giving Campaign

Direct Giving Campaign
Thank you to everyone who has contributed to our Direct Giving Campaign!  Our thermometer has reached $32,116!
Today, I'd like to share thoughts from two Salmon Bay staff members about how FOSB funding makes a real difference in our students' lives.

Winter Enrichment Program  (Xena Eckert, 4th grade)
WEP is a Salmon Bay tradition that I find quite valuable.  My students come back to class with so much excitement about the skills they've learned and share with each other.  I've watched them teach each other to break dance, discuss science concepts, play ukulele together and share food they've made.  As a teacher, I have the opportunity to connect with students in a small group and share a whole other set of skills with them.  I make lasting connections with students I will have in the future and strengthen the connections I have with past students.  And I believe that we make the world a better place when we teach kids to stretch and take risks, to be curious about something new.

FOSB Mini Grants (Joel Maier, 6th grade Teacher)
The FOSB mini grant allowed me to purchase a fill sized oven for my Kitchen Science class.  This oven, added to my other ovens, has given my class more freedom and space to better explore things like pretzel making, chicken soup from scratch and baking sugar pumpkins.  An added bonus has been that after school cooking programs can be offered to Salmon Bay students at the elementary and middle school level.

Direct Giving funding will support the Winter Enrichment Program students participate in during January and February. If we raise over $70,000, we'll be able to fund additional programs, like the FOSB mini-grants. We encourage you to donate online here or return the card you received in the mail.
Our Tax ID is 91-1622350.

If you missed our Direct Giving Donut Day this morning, you'll have one more chance to stop by next Friday, donate to FOSB and pick up a tasty Mighty-O donut! We'll be in the lobby from 8:30 - 9:00 am. We'll also have volunteers outside to handle any drive-up donation/ donut requests!

Thank you for your continued generosity!

Middle school families, please note that your student's middle school homeroom is also sponsoring a holiday donation drive in partnership with the Broadview Shelter. You are welcome to participate in either (or both) donation drives. Your student's homeroom teacher can share additional details about the Middle School Adopt-A-Family program.
