Dear Salmon Bay,

This morning as I was driving into the school, I tuned into an NPR piece on Lift Every Voice and Sing. I’d just been listening to student voices on the recordings made for our Friday Sing MLK Week Edition with student voices and their music moved me deeply. I heard from multiple people expressing that hearing kids voices at our Friday Sing brought tears to their eyes. A big thanks to all who sang. I hope this weekend that you can find joy and a reason to sing!

Looking forward when we can all sing together again,
Neil

6th Grade Materials Pick Up
You might not be able to see it, but there are big smiles on the faces of Carrie, Caitlin and Katie behind these masks! Seeing students and families at materials distribution is always a treat. Thanks for coming by, saying hello and picking up your materials.

If you missed distribution this week, don't worry! Books have been placed in Panther Passage (the alley) in a tote marked 6th grade pickup. The Passage is directly behind the school between the building and playground. The entrance is on 18th and is open from 7am to 6pm, Monday through Friday. Go down the ramp and there is a fenced in area on the right under the playground. Grab a text book, a white board, and a dry erase marker. The packets for Ticely and Katie’s classes are tucked inside the textbook. Note that access is from 18th NW only. You cannot reach the distribution area from 19th.

Erin Telford, our Athletic Director, has received some updated information regarding spring sports seasons. Please keep in mind that this information is VERY TENTATIVE and dependent on the changing nature of COVID.

The February 1, 2021 sport start date is no longer an option. Sports will not be starting on February 1st.

New proposals, listed below, are being considered at this time. The seasons below will have 2 sports played based on the sport’s risk level and direction from the Governor, Seattle Schools Athletics, WIAA, etc. These proposals are not debatable, as the information and direction are too changeable. This is purely informational so we can MAYBE plan for sports this year!

  • Proposal 1: Start March 29th – 2 seasons
  • Proposal 2: Start April 15th – 2 seasons
  • Proposal 3: Start May 3rd – 1 season

Parent Education Event with Rosetta Lee
THE FOSB PIE committee hosts Rosetta Lee - Talking To Youth About Heated Topics
Tuesday, Jan 26 at 7pm
Registration is FREE, and required: https://tinyurl.com/Jan26Heated
This event is open to the community.

Description: Young people can bear witness to challenging and/or traumatic events in current events, media, and our local communities. They often process thoughts, feelings, and reactions without our explicit help and guidance - thereby increasing their confusion and anxiety.
-Adults have a natural instinct to protect their children from harsh realities, yet want to prepare them to navigate our complex world - is it possible to do both?
- How can we talk about identity, difference, and justice in age appropriate ways?
- How do you reinforce your family's values while maintaining respect for other perspectives?
- How do you coach children toward authentic and respectful dialogue across differences?
Engage in these questions and more through this interactive online session.
Event Questions? PIE committee chair, Julie Schneider - [email protected] or [email protected]

January 27th - Ending the Silence - A Youth Mental Health Event
The intense emotional burden of 2020 has definitely taken a toll on some of our community’s students, school staff, and families. To address this, we’re partnering up with PNW Parent Education and the National Alliance on Mental Illness with an early intervention and educational presentation titled, “Ending the Silence: A Youth Mental Health Event”. This FREE online event is on Wednesday, January 27, 2021 at 6:30 pm. If you are interested in attending, please register here.

This relevant and engaging presentation will help attendees identify early signs and symptoms of mental illness in youth, provide information about treatments, and we’ll have a young adult who will share their lived experience coping with depression and anxiety. The goal of this event is to begin a larger discussion about mental health so that young people dealing with mental health conditions realize they are not alone.

Lastly, while watching the event, you can also order a delicious family meal from The Extra Ingredient. Please click on this link. All orders must be placed by Wed, January 20, 2021 and 20% of all proceeds will be donated to PNW Parent Education.
