Marimba Concert

We held our first Marimba Night at Salmon Bay on Wednesday evening. Students were also treated to a matinee performance on Wednesday afternoon.  Congratulations to all students on a stellar performance!

The Odd-yssey

After overcoming a plethora of challenges from weather to wifi, students performed The
Odd-yssey to the enjoyment of audiences on Tuesday and Wednesday evening. Kudos to all of the actors and crew!

Creating Continents
We often highlight WEP activities during the month of January but academic learning continues to take place throughout the building every day.

We found Carol's class painting in the auditorium today. Second grade students are currently studying continents. During this unit, students work together to make a map and then research information about their specific continent.

Rwanda Tribunals are Underway

Our 7th & 8th graders are in the final stages of their mock courtrooms, with each panel of justices trying to ascertain truth and assign blame for the tragic Rwandan genocide that took place in the spring and early summer of 1994. As law firms representing stake holders (Belgium, U.N., U.S., Hutu, Tutsi) the students are delving into the convoluted roots of conflict. As we wrap up this unit, students will be writing about the larger themes of conflict, then begin researching global conflicts and offering potential action-based solutions. Watch for Conflict and resolution Presentation Night coming this spring.

From Admin
Dear Families,

With February and Black History Month around the corner, we will once again participate in Black Lives Matter at School Week from February 3rd - 7th.  Our school Racial Equity Team (RET) made up of teachers, staff, and parents have worked diligently over the last couple months to examine and gather developmentally appropriate lessons, videos, books, and resource materials for teachers.  Our planned learning activities will be centered around the 4 BLM Principles of Empathy, Diversity, Loving Engagement, and Restorative Justice.  Attached is a helpful guide to explaining these 4 principles to younger students, that can easily be adapted for older students.

As an RET, we continue to grapple with understanding what racial equity work looks like in our majority white school and community.  What role do we all play in our various places of privilege and power?  There are no simple answers or pathways, but we can always choose to begin, choose to be open, and choose to learn.  With Monday's holiday, I'm reminded of Dr. King's letter from a Birmingham Jail.  If you have not read it in its entirety, it can be found here. I encourage you to think about his words and what this means for all of us not just during BLM Week at Schools, but every day, and for every student across our district.

In partnership,
Annie

Volunteer Needs
Tour Guides for Tuesday
Our last daytime school tour will be held on Tuesday morning. We need parents to be a friendly presence and assist with directing visitors through the building. If you can smile, you can do this!

Elementary tour at 10 am (volunteers are done by 11)
Middle School tour at 9:15 am (volunteers are done by 10:20 am).
Or you can help with both tours!
Email Jodi to volunteer or find out more.

Volunteer Drivers Needed on Friday Afternoon
Our WEP Tour of Seattle middle school students (group B) will be taking an Argosy cruise through the Ballard Locks next week. We need drivers to pick up students at 2:45 pm at the AGC Marina, Lake Union, and drive kids back to school. Parent drivers allow us to return kids to school in time to catch bus transportation home. Anyone can help support this program (even if your student is not participating!).  Please sign up here or email Jodi to help.

Snack Donations
Some of our classrooms are running low on snacks. They are seeking donations of bulk goldfish, graham crackers, ritz crackers, pretzels, roasted almonds, peanut butter, raisins, and carrot packs. Bags of Trader Joe's White Cheddar Corn Puffs are also needed (these are used for positive reward incentives).

New After School Volunteer Daily Host Program
We would like to recruit 5 volunteers, one for each day of the week, to be onsite during after school programs.  This parent volunteer will receive a $50 discount towards a class of their choice. As a daily host, the volunteer will touch base with all after school class instructors offering classes that day. Daily After School Program Hosts will assist with any attendance issues, help problem-solve and be a second pair of hands should a need arise. The volunteer periodically checks in with each class while classes are in session. If you are interested in volunteering or finding out more, please email Jodi, Volunteer Coordinator at Salmon Bay.

Self-Defense Classes
Personal Self-Defense for 4-6th grade Students
February 10, 2020
6 - 8 pm at Salmon Bay School
Children just before their tween years are beginning to seek some independence. They may be staying home alone (or with younger siblings) for longer periods of time, babysit, walking to a friend's house or to school, or riding the bus with buddies. They are dipping their toes in the water, at times without direct adult supervision. They are likely more afraid of "stranger danger" than acquaintance assault, although the latter is far, far more prevalent. They could use some skills to help make up for the experience they don't yet have. In this class, they will learn to recognize "red flags" that someone may mean harm, plan safe exits from iffy situation, practice physical moves (just in case), and learn to find supportive self-care. All in age-appropriate language and concepts.

This is a parent and child class , children must be accompanied by an adult. Cost is $45 per child, adults are free.   Financial assistance is available -- please contact Strategic Living for your discount code.

Personal Safety & Self-Defense for 7-8th gr. Girls
Wednesdays, February 26th & March 4th
6:30 - 8:00 pm
Girls are exploring on their own, and looking more to their peers for standards in boundaries and relationships. They are out more, with their friends or by themselves. They may be riding a bus solo or babysitting. And you do want them to grow into their independent and resilient selves.  At the same time you may be concerned about peer pressure and a cultural environment that romanticizes unhealthy relationship behavior and tends to denigrate girls' abilities and sense of self.

In this class, your girl will learn to recognize "red flags" that someone may mean harm, plan safe exits from iiffy situation, practice physical moves (just in case), and learn to find supportive selfcare a ll in age-appropriate language and concepts.

Open to female and female-identified students, grades 7 and 8, at Salmon Bay. Financial assistance available, please contact Strategic Living LLC for a registration code.

Potential 7-8th grade Boys Class
We are trying to determine if there is enough interest in an additional self-defense class for 7-8th grade boys. If your family is interested in a class on this topic, please let Jodi know. Thank you.

Talking to Youth About Heated Topics
with Rosetta Lee
Tuesday, March 10
7:00pm Salmon Bay School cafetorium
1810 NW 65th St, Seattle 98117 (enter on 18th)
Young people can bear witness to challenging and/or traumatic events in current events, media, and our local communities. They often process thoughts, feelings, and reactions without our explicit help and guidance - thereby increasing their confusion and anxiety.
- Adults have a natural instinct to protect their children from harsh realities, yet want to prepare them to navigate our complex world - is it possible to do both?
- How can we talk about identity, difference, and justice in age appropriate ways?
- How do you reinforce your family's values while maintaining respect for other perspectives?
- How do you coach children toward authentic and respectful dialogue across differences?
Engage in these questions and more through this interactive session.
-Download the event flyer here.

Open Enrollment & School Choice
Open Enrollment for School Choice Feb. 3 - 14th
Each student in Seattle Public Schools is assigned to a school based on where that student lives. Students may apply to attend a different school through the School Choice Process, which begins February 3, 2020.
If your student is currently attending an option school or another school that is not their attendance area school by choice, they can continue at this school until the highest grade offered without having to apply again. If your student is currently attending an option school but wishes to attend a neighborhood school in 2020-21, they will need to apply through the School Choice process.

Applying for Another School
If you are interested in requesting either an attendance area school or option school, other than your assigned school, you must submit a School Choice form. Only forms submitted during Open Enrollment Feb. 3 - 14, will receive tiebreakers such as the sibling tiebreaker which gives siblings priority in admissions.

Families are encouraged to apply during the Open Enrollment window. Applications received after Open Enrollment are date stamped and priority is based on the date in which the application is received. School Choice forms are available online during the Open Enrollment window, or at the John Stanford Center.

The results of Open Enrollment for the 2020-21 school year will be available online in April.

More information is available on the School Choice webpage.    Read more about change of school process for special education students here.

Reviewing Your Student's School Assignment
Next year's assignments are now available in the Assignment Lookup Tool on the district website. Please note that your child's school assignment may have changed due to new school boundaries and the opening of new schools in Fall 2019. To view your child's assignment, you will need your child's date of birth and student ID number. You can find your child's student ID by contacting Admissions at 206-252-0760 or checking your student's record on The Source.

Girls on the Run
We are excited to announce that Salmon Bay will be having a Girls on the Run (GOTR) team again this year! GOTR is an after-school program that uses the power of running to give girls the tools to celebrate their bodies, honor their voices, recognize their gifts and activate their power! 3rd-5th grade girls come together twice a week to learn new skills, celebrate girl empowerment, and train to run a non-competitive 5K at the end of the ten-week season.

The girls will be coached by teachers Talia and Gabrielle, as well as Amy Paguirian, a Salmon Bay parent. Practices will be held twice a week, on Mondays and Thursdays, from 3:30-5:00 pm. The season starts on March 2nd and runs for ten weeks, with the 5K being held on Sunday, May 17th at Renton Memorial Stadium. Registration opens on January 10th, 2019 at 9am and will be a lottery period until January 24th at 5pm. After January 24th, registration will be first-come, first-served, to fill any remaining spots up to a maximum of 15 girls.

Y ou can learn more and register here
Registration is $200 per girl; please see the website for what this includes. Scholarships are available. If you have any questions, feel free to email Talia
