Seen in the Hallways
Black Lives Matter at School Poster
Third through fifth grade students participating in the Screen Printing WEP class thoughtfully considered four of the 13 Black Lives Matter at School Principles; Empathy, Restorative Justice, Loving Engagement, and Diversity. Students had the option of using those words, drawing a picture that evokes the principle, or using their own words. The poster incorporates drawings and student voice for all four principles.

WEP - Week 5
It was wet in the mountains today. But no matter the conditions, we are always looking for opportunities to teach and connect with students. As one parent said, "skiing in the rain is an opportunity to hone engineering skills and understand physics in action!"

Our K-2 students wrapped up their small group classes this week. We will try to display some of their projects and additional  photos in the coming few weeks. For now, here's another  peek at K-2 student creativity.

Family Needs

Support the Anderson Family!
Milo (Kindergarten) and his younger sister, Marley (2), just welcomed two new sisters to their family. Milo's parents, Max and Jacqueline, would love support as they get used to being a family of six. Here are some ways to help:
  • Holding the babies: the family would LOVE visitors to come and hold/feed the babies so they can do other things around the house. Annie Parker and I got to hold the babies on Wednesday and it was magical!
  • Playdates with Milo (especially for families also in Amy's class)
  • Gift cards: The family shops at QFC and Amazon and this support would be extremely helpful. Any amounts welcome. please drop these off in the main ofice, attn Jenny Brooks.
  • GoFundMe site: the family has set up a GoFundMe site to help with their increased expenses.
Please reach out to Jenny Brooks  or Caitlin Racey  if you would like to help.

With gratitude,
Jenny B.

Family Seeking Housing
We are a family of 4, plus our dog, needing temporary housing until May.
We unfortunately had to move out of our home due to toxic mold.  We all were sick from the mold with high levels of mycotoxins. Until it is remediated, and construction is completed we can't move back in.

We would be happy to take care of animals or pet it.  We are looking for mostly weekday housing.

Also, needing to find a foster home for our gunnies pig Snickers. We will provide everything needed for his living and expenses.

In gratitude,
Bridget

Please call 206-371-5961 or email if you can help.

Nurse's Corner
From the District - Coronavirus Information
We are aware of concerns in our community about coronavirus (2019-nCov). We are continuing to follow guidance from the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Public Health Seattle- King County.

The CDC is recommending all travelers from China (including staff, school students, and volunteers) arriving after Feb. 2, 2020 to stay at home, away from the general population for 14 days. This is precautionary and the CDC measure was put into place because of the increasing numbers of 2019-nCOV cases in China.

Information and guidance continues to change and so we are keeping families updated through the feature story on all of our websites

Schools are prepared to work with students who may need to stay home, and absences will be marked as excused.

As a reminder, in all cases it is good practice during the winter flu season to do the following:
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer if soap and water are not available
  • Cough into a tissue or your elbow (not your hand). Then throw tissue away and wash hands
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands
  • Avoid contact with people who are sick.
  • Stay home when you are sick
  • Keep students home if their temperature is above 100.0 F (38.7 C) or they report not feeling well, appear weak, or ill
  • Consult your health care provider if you and/or your child have special health conditions that put you and/or your child at increased risk

New After School Volunteer Daily Host Program
We would like to recruit 5 volunteers, one for each day of the week, to be onsite during after school programs.  This parent volunteer will receive a $50 discount towards a class of their choice. As a daily host, the volunteer will touch base with all after school class instructors offering classes that day. Daily After School Program Hosts will assist with any attendance issues, help problem-solve and be a second pair of hands should a need arise. The volunteer periodically checks in with each class while classes are in session. If you are interested in volunteering or finding out more, please email Jodi, Volunteer Coordinator at Salmon Bay.

Parent Education Presentation
Life after graduation: Are your kids ready?
Ballard High School PTSA General Meeting & Speaker
7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 13 in the BHS Library

Parent educator Jody McVittie, MD, CPDLT, left her family practice in 1996 to work as a lead trainer with the  Positive Discipline Associationand founded  Sound Discipline in 2007. Jody will be joining our next General Meeting to speak about how to navigate the terrain of getting our kids ready for life after graduation. Not about academics, but all the other aspects of life that our kids need to function in the real world without us.

How will they organize their life? From keeping fresh clothes at hand to feeding themselves more than ramen noodles, not overcharging their accounts to handling the social emotional field.

You know, all those many loose ends that we so often step in for them - let us find out together with interactive role play and conversation!

Talking to Youth About Heated Topics
with Rosetta Lee
Tuesday, March 10
7:00pm Salmon Bay School cafetorium
1810 NW 65th St, Seattle 98117 (enter on 18th)
Young people can bear witness to challenging and/or traumatic events in current events, media, and our local communities. They often process thoughts, feelings, and reactions without our explicit help and guidance - thereby increasing their confusion and anxiety.
- Adults have a natural instinct to protect their children from harsh realities, yet want to prepare them to navigate our complex world - is it possible to do both?
- How can we talk about identity, difference, and justice in age appropriate ways?
- How do you reinforce your family's values while maintaining respect for other perspectives?
- How do you coach children toward authentic and respectful dialogue across differences?
Engage in these questions and more through this interactive session.
-Download the event flyer here.

Free childcare available for potty independent kids. Childcare RSVP required. Contact COHO Boys and Girls Club directly at 206-297-7764 or [email protected]

Open Enrollment & School Choice
Applying for Another School
If you are interested in requesting either an attendance area school or option school, other than your assigned school, you must submit a School Choice form. Only forms submitted during Open Enrollment Feb. 3 - 14, will receive tiebreakers such as the sibling tiebreaker which gives siblings priority in admissions.

Families are encouraged to apply during the Open Enrollment window. Applications received after Open Enrollment are date stamped and priority is based on the date in which the application is received. School Choice forms are available online during the Open Enrollment window, or at the John Stanford Center.

The results of Open Enrollment for the 2020-21 school year will be available online in April.

More information is available on the School Choice webpage.    Read more about change of school process for special education students here.

Reviewing Your Student's School Assignment

You can find your child's student ID by contacting Admissions at 206-252-0760 or checking your student's record on The Source.
