Counselor's Corner

Wow! Three months! It's been exactly three months now that our children have been out of the school building and at home. Cooped up. We've all been cooped up with our families, cooped up with our kids, cooped up with our thoughts. Ugh. One third of the year, we have been at home trying, and I want to emphasize 'trying', to teach our kids or should I say, 'support' them with their learning. I know for me, in my house, trying to help two middle schoolers has not always worked out productively or positively. Either my work has suffered so that I could help them focus on assignments or their schoolwork has suffered because I could not spend hours upon hours every day sitting with them. What I'm getting at here is that it hasn't been easy, for the last third of the school year, for ANY of us.

Some of you in the community have struggled more than others and many of you have stepped up to support others in our community. This has been an amazingly surreal journey, for sure. We are in a new frontier here. I know a good of bit of you are worried about your children, their education, and their mental health. And we all should be concerned, but for the most part, I am hopeful. I know that children are resilient, they will be stronger to have lived through this time. This is a time to work on acceptance and monitoring our expectations. Those are two huge concepts that are important to living happier, balanced lives. We've all had our expectations doused this spring and we must accept that. Also, we don't know what this fall will bring, and we have to accept that, too. Deep breaths, acceptance and gratitude are in order. As well as Peace, Love and Understanding. I hope that you all have a fabulous summer doing the simple, easy things that you love.

Be well,
Rob.

As always, if you need any support please email, as we will be checking periodically (weekly). After a considerable break from the computer screen, of course.

Much love,

Librarian's Corner

This is the last weekend of our Virtual Book Fair!

Just a few reminders:
  • Salmon Bay's library will receive a 10% commission from all purchases made on Secret Garden's website, with "SALMON BAY BOOK FAIR" written in the order comments.
  • When your order is ready, Secret Garden will contact you so you can make a curb-side pick-up outside their shop. If you won't be able to get there to pick your items up, Teacher Ben is happy to get them and bring them to your door. Just type, "BEN DELIVER" in your order comments.
  • If your child is in need of books and you are unable to provide them, please reach out to Ben, Jenny Brooks, or Rob Bright for assistance.  We have a fund set aside to provide books to kids with financial need.

Newsies

For your viewing pleasure:
The videos of Newsies have been numbered so you can watch them all in a row, like a "real" production.

Director's note: I would like to specially thank: the parents who supported this project all along, who helped solve tech problems even while going through any number of huge upheavals; the students of the theatre tech class who, even after the class was "cancelled" continued to show up and create beautiful artwork; the students of the musical production class who kept coming to play practice every day, even on spring vacation, trusting me completely in the shooting and posting of these music videos. I would like to extend a special thanks to Xelli B. who was a dedicated production designer, who created beautiful backdrops, who learned and taught dance choreography as a Bowery Beauty, and who participated as a full member of the cast. Great job Xelli!
Thanks you guys!

These zoom-videos are technically rough but are so dang fun to watch. This production is, to me, a crystal illustration of how important it is to keep singing, even on the darkest of days. I love it to bits. I'm so proud of what we did! It is ALIVE!
So now... Make a batch of popcorn, turn the lights down low and invite the whole family to enjoy....
Newsies, the Salmon Bay production!

Promotion Celebrations
Dear 5th and 8th Grade Families,

On Tuesday (6/16) and Wednesday (6/17), we are honoring our students with a Drive-Thru Celebration for 5th and 8th families, to revel in all of the students' accomplishments as they enter the next phase of their school career.  We will be setting up a route from 18th Ave NW onto and through our playground to 19th Ave NW.  Social distancing protocols will continue to be observed as your families drive through.  Salmon Bay staff are excited to see you and wave, yell, and holler at all our awesome students (and families)!

  • This is for 5th and 8th grade families ONLY, one vehicle per family
  • 5th grade Drive-Thru Celebration is Tuesday from 4:00 to 5:00
  • 8th grade Drive-Thru Celebration is Wednesday from 5:00 to 6:30
  • Bike/walk through ONLY if a vehicle isn't an option (out of necessity not preference)
  • Everyone should dress in your finest outfit (including your face mask or covering)
  • Write your name (BIG) and put in your window so we know who we're hollering for, feel free to decorate your vehicle as you wish
  • Stay in your vehicle the entire time
  • We will take photos and send them to you electronically
  • Everyone needs to travel south on 18th Ave NW starting no closer to campus than 70th Ave NW, cut through the playground and briefly stop for a photo opportunity, and then travel onto 19th Ave NW to exit

Although the Virtual Promotion Ceremonies are recorded and can be viewed at any time, we invite and encourage all involved to "press play" at the same time. We have been largely separated from one another for months and it will be powerful to connect in the same purpose and intention. 5th grade ceremony begins at 6:00 on Tuesday, and 8th grade begins at 7:00 on Wednesday.

We all look forward to celebrating your student and family next week. Thank you for being a part of our school community and know that your presence and participation has been a gift.

In partnership,

Annie, Darren and Neil

Staff Introductions

Please Welcome Our New Staff Members

Meet David Bauernfeind!  David is excited to join the teaching team at Salmon Bay this coming fall as a MS Resource Room Teacher. He grew up in the Midwest and followed his partner, Sarah, to Seattle in the fall of 2015. He's been teaching in the intermediate SEL classroom at B.F. Day Elementary for the past four years. David  was fortunate to be able to pursue his Master's in Special Education while working as an IA, and then transition to the role of classroom teacher in the same classroom. In addition to education, some of his other passions include making music, spending time outdoors, mycology, and relaxing at home with his partner and our dog.

Megan McCarroll grew up in the Pacific Northwest and spent her early years playing in the creek by her home in Portland, Oregon and hiking in the Columbia River Gorge. She headed over to North Carolina for college to study at Duke University, where she swam competitively and obtained her elementary teaching credentials. While in college, Megan developed a strong interest in global issues and perspectives in education, and following graduation, she received a scholarship to teach in Nepal. While in Nepal, she lived with a host family, learned Nepali, and taught in a local school in a district south of Kathmandu. This experience grounded her passion for therapeutic approaches to education, as families were recovering from the devastating effects of the 2015 earthquakes. As a result, she obtained a position to teach at Portland Village School, a Waldorf inspired school in Oregon, where she spent nearly two years. Upon finishing the loop with her fourth graders, Megan said goodbye to Oregon again and spent the summer working at an education foundation in rural Nepal before heading to graduate school in England, where she studied trauma-informed education.

Megan moved to Seattle this past January. She is delighted to be back living in the Pacific Northwest; her love for water and wilderness has served as an important anchor in her life. Moreover, she is hopeful that she may be able to see her favorite animal in real life, the humpback whale. Megan is thrilled to join the Salmon Bay family as a 5th Grade Teacher and is excited to meet her students and families for this coming school year.

BLM Shirt Sale

BLM Shirt Sale
The EDI committee is offering another run of BLM tee-shirts.  The same two designs as earlier this year will be available - the  national design ($10) was created by a student artist and the school design ($7) features a tree and our school name on it.

The EDI committee works with a local Black owned print shop to create the shirts.  A set number of shirts/sizes have been ordered and are expected to be ready for pick up on Friday, June 19th from Julie Schneider's home (near the school) or delivery can be arranged.  Payment by check written to FOSB, cash, or VenMo available.  The additional money raised will be added to the EDI committee budget.   Adult and Youth sizes available in each design.  Questions, or to reserve your size/design, email [email protected]

Black Lives Matter

Weekly Friday Ballard Protests for Black Lives Matter
Many Salmon Bay families showed up at 65th and 24th with signs and noise makers last Friday in response to a neighborhood call to protest in support of Black Lives Matter. Sustainable Ballard wants to continue that grassroots event and invites you to join us to stand up for Black Lives Matter again this Friday, June 12 at 65th and 24th from 5:00 - 6:00 p.m.  We are planning to show up in support every Friday as long as downtown protests continue and #BlackLivesMatter demands are on the table. For more information click here.

Seattle Children's March
Saturday, June 13th from  1pm - 4pm
Garfield High School Track and Field.

The children of Seattle envision a world where black children can live without fear of police brutality. A world where black girls from elementary to high school are allowed to express a full range of emotions without being perceived as angry or aggressive. A world where black boys are not seen as men from the moment they sprout their first facial hair. A world where gender-fluid children do not have to hide their feelings from parents or peers. The children see a hate-free world, and they will not stop until it's a reality. Join us as we  march in solidarity with our youth leadership and the power of the children.

Ballard Performing Arts Supports BLM
BPA is excited to announce a special fundraiser organized completely by Ballard High School Performing Arts students called Ballard Performing Arts (BPA) supports Black Lives Matters (BLM).

Black American Music (BAM), commonly known as Jazz, is an essential part of the Ballard community.  BAM enriches the education of Ballard High School students, and our students want to give back to the Black community.

This week, the BPA students came up with the idea to hold a drawing for private performances by five of our groups.  Donate $25 or more to one of these organizations fighting for justice that were hand-selected by Ballard students and you'll be entered in a drawing to win a private performance on a mutually agreeable date in the future by one of our five participating student ensembles.

Performances will be by a Ballard Performing Arts student ensemble (Jazz, Vocal Jazz, Fiddle Ensembles, String Quartet and Thespian Troupe). There are 5 chances to win. And,  100% of the proceeds go directly to the organizations.

Participating is easy:
Step 1: Choose an organization or two (or three!) to support from this list.
Step 2: Donate. For every $25 donation, you will receive one entry for a drawing to win a performance from a Ballard Performing Arts student ensemble
Step 3: Email your receipt to [email protected]
Step 4: Listen, Learn and Grow

Winners will be contacted through email after the drawing closes on June 30.

Emergency Food Box Delivery

Emergency Delivery of Food Boxes
United Way of King County, Food Lifeline, the City of Seattle and Metro Access are excited to begin offering home delivery of emergency food boxes across Seattle, North King County, and East King County during COVID-19. This resource is available to anyone who:
  • Lives in Seattle, North King County, or East King County
  • Is unable to access their local food bank in person
  • Is unable to afford groceries
To order a food box, fill out this online form, or call us Toll-Free at 833-540-0800, Mondays to Fridays from 11am-4pm. At this time, households can order up to three food boxes per delivery.

We are encouraging folks to visit their local food banks if they are able; in addition to on-site food distributions, many local food banks also operate home delivery programs, and may be able to provide a more customized food selection to clients. Families can find a nearby food bank at foodlifeline.org/need-food.

Some additional information about this service:
1. What's in a food box? This offers preset 15-25 lb variety cases of shelf-stable foods from Food Lifeline. These may include canned meals, canned fruit, canned veggies, pasta, and other miscellaneous items. Some boxes may also contain perishable items like bread or produce with a longer shelf-life. One box is estimated to feed a family of four for approximately 2-4 days. We are currently unable to meet individual allergy and dietary needs.
2. We hope to also offer produce boxes from Food Lifeline in the coming weeks. Clients would be able to order either or both the shelf-stable and produce boxes for delivery.
3. Households can reorder as often as they need. We are making deliveries Monday through Friday during the day, and have an option to leave the food box if nobody is home. We hope to deliver boxes 2 to 3 days after the request is received. Requests received on Thursday or Friday will be delivered the following week. If requests exceed our food or delivery capacity, we may adjust the eligibility requirements or frequency of orders.
4. The phone line to order includes a language line for interpretation, and our online ordering form is available in the following languages: English, Spanish, Vietnamese, Tagalog, Chinese (simplified), Amharic, and Russian. We also hope to offer the online ordering form in Somali and Oromo starting Thursday.

We welcome submissions to our weekly Bulletin.
