Camp Week
Our last class attended camp this week! Fourth grade students spent Monday through Wednesday at Camp Seymour. We've enjoyed hearing their stories and learning more about their camp activities. From the smiles in these photos, it looks like everyone had a great time!

Middle School Instrumental Music
Friends and family were treated to a wonderful evening of music on Tuesday night at the middle school spring concert. We were impressed with how much students in each group (Jazz Band, Junior Band, Marimbas and Senior Band)  learned this year. Kudos to Music Director Mark Oesterle and all of the participating students on a great performance!

Girls Who Code

Linda and Ms. Chambers (BHS Librarian) arranged a visit to Salmon Bay by Ballard's Girls Who Code group. The BHS students worked with 5th graders on some activities during which students used computational thinking strategies. In this activity, students took turns being "programmers" and "robots" to create several different cup stacking configurations.

From the Library

On Monday, our 5th grade students worked with the BHS Girls Who Code club. Our library time flew by as students worked in small groups to program their human "robots" to stack cups, draw pictures, and complete a range of motions. Everyone had an opportunity to take on the role of both robot and programmer!

All of our K/1 students spent time this spring diving into nonfiction texts. I enjoyed seeing how seriously they took on their roles as researchers, and also how proud they were to demonstrate their understanding of the importance of nonfiction text features.

As we approach the end of the school year, I appreciate everyone's efforts in returning books to the library! Here is a list of answers to a few FAQs about overdue/lost books. I hope families will find these useful.

If you did not receive an overdue slip, you can always check the Source to see if your students have any overdue/lost books. Our library system automatically converts books to "lost" when they're six months overdue. The fine disappears when lost books are returned!

There are a couple of options when it comes to paying for lost or damaged books. SchoolPay now accepts payments or you may make a payment here at school. We also accept payments for charges accrued at other SPS schools. (The funds will transfer to your student's previous school.)

If you think you may have returned Salmon Bay books to the Seattle Public Library, please let me know. They will make it back to us eventually.

If your student has a slip for books they've already returned to their class library bin, please ask them to check their classroom library. Library books often end up there. We also see a lot of books come back during end-of-year classroom and locker clean-outs!

Please stop by the library or email me with any questions or concerns at   [email protected]

Thanks,
Linda

FOSB volunteer needs for the 2019-2020 school year
We still have open leadership positions and we need family support to make this organization work. Please contact  [email protected]  if you're interested in getting involved next year.

After School Program Committee: This committee finds and organizes after-school programs for Salmon Bay students, including determining the programming for each quarter and managing registration. This is a great work-from-home opportunity that you can flex to your schedule. Two or three volunteers are needed.

Co-Chair: FOSB's co-chairs serve as meeting facilitators, collaborators, and advocates for families, students, and staff. We have an experienced co-chair returning to FOSB next year in the middle school co-chair role. If you have an elementary student and want to be more active in their school experience, this could be the role for you!

Committees: FOSB has many committees that are looking for additional participation. Consider joining the Parent Information Exchange (PIE), GardenCommittee, Legislative Committee, Funding Equity Committee (looking for a chair to continue), and more. Check out www.friendsofsalmonbay.org for more information about committees or contact [email protected].

Volunteer Opportunities

Your Help Is Needed
The end of the year is a whirlwind! We need volunteer support to staff year-end events and help our students celebrate their accomplishments. If you can help, please sign-up below.

5th Grade Promotion
Attention 3rd and 4th Grade Families:  At Salmon Bay, it has been a tradition that 3rd and 4th grade parents "pay it forward" by serving cake and punch at the 5th grade promotion. Next year, you'll have a chance to celebrate while another team of parents serves cake and punch to you.  Are you planning to come to 5th grade Promotion? Would you be willing to help slice and serve cake? Please  email Jodi  if you can help.

8th Grade Picnic
Eighth grade students will practice for promotion on the morning of June 26th. Following practice,  they will be treated to a picnic lunch at Salmon Bay. We need additional help from 8th grade parents at the picnic. This is one of your last chances to hang out with the 8th grade class! If you can help at the picnic, please sign up at this link.

8th Grade Promotion
To allow 8th grade families to focus exclusively on their students on promotion night, we ask 6th and 7th grade families to "pay it forward" by taking on the volunteer tasks associated with the event. Your turn to relax will come!   The promotion ceremony is at Whitman Middle School at 7pm on Wednesday, June 26 th  at 7 pm.   Volunteers helping with the event should arrive by 6:15 - 6:30 pm.
Please consider how you might help and sign-up here

Water Balloons for Field Day
One of the most fun volunteer tasks each year is filling water balloons for Field Day. This is a great job for kids!
If you can help fill and deliver water balloons, please sign up here. Balloons should be delivered to the upper field at drop-off on the morning of June 21st.

Popsicle Station Help
Jodi is still seeking a few parents to assist with our Field Day Popsicle Station on the morning of June 21st . Your reward is a lot of smiling children and we'll give you a popsicle too!   Email  Jodi  if you are interested.

From Admin
Salmon Bay Families,

Next Thursday is Rainbow Day at Salmon Bay.  This was chosen as part of spirit week to not just show school spirit, but also tie into Seattle Pride Month and be supportive of our diverse community.  We will be starting the morning with an assembly for our MS students during homeroom.  Isyss Honnen, Director of Transform WA, will be presenting to students to build awareness as we support trans and gender diverse students, identify spaces where students can find community, and address allyship.

During MS lunch we will raise the Pride Flag in front of the school as a symbol of our commitment to be an accepting and safe space.  Several students will be speaking about their experience and why Pride is important for them.  Students are invited to attend and eat lunch in front of the school as well as to participate in a Salmon Bay Pride photo.

We are proud of the student voices that have been part of the planning for this event and the courage it takes for them to share with peers.  We invite everyone to participate in Rainbow Day next Thursday to show your support.
