Making History Continues Online
Always popular with fifth-grade students and their families at Salmon Bay School, Making History is back and now online. Students are once again researching primitive technologies and learning about the flora and fauna in their territories. They're collaborating with their culture groups in Zoom breakout rooms. They're writing stories and reports to increase their cultures' proficiency in these skills and submitting their work in Schoology. They're once again taking turns at the map, set up in their teachers' basements and virtually, to move around the Making History world. And there are still horrible calamities (two tsunamis just this week!) and tremendous breakthroughs (at least one culture is very close to earning a Town!).

Making History is a year-long classroom simulation in which students undertake the challenge of building a rich culture or civilization from scratch. Each simulated society begins with relatively few technologies, similar to the way early humans lived tens of thousands of years ago. The aim of the simulation is for students to cooperate as a team: to create and develop a rich culture; to work with specific and limited natural resources; to trade and interact with other societies; and to research, invent, and journal the all of their society's developments. Best of all, Making History motivates students to do their best work and more because it's so much fun!

Librarian's Corner

Dear Salmon Bay community,

I want everyone to know that over 400 titles in Seattle Public Library's kids' e-book collection are now in "always available" status through June 30. This means an unlimited number of borrowers can check out each title, no holds required.  You can "check out" books with your existing library card number or by setting up a new account with your phone number.

Announcing Our New Family Support Fund

Dear Salmon Bay community,

Community has always been an important aspect of Salmon Bay-both the community we create within our school walls and the larger community in which we live. During recent weeks, we have witnessed our community caring for each other in a wide variety of ways. As the impact of the current pandemic ripples throughout the school year and into summer, we know that some members of our school community may need additional support. To help address those needs, we invite you to contribute to our new Family Support Fund.

All money raised through this fund will be devoted to supporting school families who are experiencing financial hardship due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Support will be shared with Salmon Bay families as well as families from Broadview Thomson PK-8, our neighbors to the north.

Broadview Thomson's families have been heavily impacted by the pandemic, and their care team is currently unable to meet family requests for support. Access to these funds will enable care teams from both schools to provide assistance with basic needs and family support during this school closure and the coming summer months.

Our goal is to raise $15,000 for the Family Support Fund in lieu of a spring fundraising campaign. If you are able to make a contribution, please go to salmonbayschool.maestroweb.com.

Thank you for your support and partnership during this unprecedented time. Our care for one another holds our community together.

In gratitude,

Jodi Russell

FOSB News & Events

Friends of Salmon Bay (FOSB) is our school
parent teacher organization.

I asked my daughter if she could get back to school what she'd want to do the most. She said she'd want to go to camp. I agreed, I'd love to go on a camp adventure with friends from school right now. Experiential learning is one of the things we love most about Salmon Bay. It's also one of the things that requires a lot of help from parents. Not only as chaperones but also organizing and funding via FOSB.

We have several positions that need filling next year. We'd love to get people in place soon so we can make a smooth transition into next year given the unusual circumstances. It is always intimidating to make a commitment but the benefits to community and to yourself are well worth it. Please seriously consider joining FOSB next year.

We are looking for parents to join as FOSB directors (board members) and officers:
  • Co-Chair
  • Secretary
  • Assistant Treasurer
Click here to learn more about joining the FOSB Board.

Join us Thursday, May 14 at 7 p.m
for our annual membership meeting.
Check future editions of the Weekly Bulletin for Zoom log-in information.

From Admin

Dear Salmon Bay Families and Community Members,

Happy May Day!  It seems a fitting day to enjoy fine weather and advocate for greater income equality.  I'm writing from my backyard now with the scent of lilacs and irises wafting through the air.  I also want to recognize/acknowledge that I'm writing from a position of privilege, and much of my privilege is unearned.

My parents were able to attend college, own their own homes, assist me in college and provide me with access to opportunities.   I have had access to credit and to scholarships.  As a white, cisgender male I didn't have the same struggles others may encounter when applying for jobs or loans or leadership roles. We own a house.  I have a garden.  I have a job that has continued with benefits during this time of layoffs and uncertainty. I have health care benefits.

Recently, I've become aware of a concept called fund-shifting as opposed to charitable giving.  The idea is that we as individuals and organizations need to work actively towards greater income equality - and that to do this, we will need to shift resources that have been historically accrued - often to privileged groups of people through policies and practices.

In these times when there are so many families anxious and in need - and the Federal Government is giving out $2.2 trillion as part of the CARES Act - it is my hope that these funds don't just exasperate the divide and keep stockholder profits up.  Historically when there are economic crisis, wealth distribution continues to be distributed inequitably across our communities.

I'm inviting families that are in a fortunate position during this crisis to join me in shifting some funds - perhaps those you receive from the government or from your personal accounts to support families in need during this time.   One place you might consider giving is to our Family Support Fund. This fund will support families in the Salmon Bay K-8 and Broadview Thomson PK-8 communities with basic needs during this closure and into the summer.

I am grateful for the chance to be part of this giving community, and humbled to have the task of leading our school through these times.  Thank you.

Neil

Salmon Bay Stays Home

Submit a Poem to 'Salmon Bay Stays Home'
April is National Poetry Month, and staying home is a great time to discover new poets, read some old favorites, and most of all...  WRITE your own poetry.  We are living through something unlike anything we've ever experienced before, and creative writing can be a great way to help small people process some big and confusing feelings.

Salmon Bay has a tradition of celebrating poetry every Spring, and this year may look different, but we are still celebrating.  ALL students are invited and encouraged to submit an original poem to the "Salmon Bay Stays Home" Poetry Anthology - poems can be of any length, on any topic, in any style.  The only 'rule' is that it must be an original poem by a current Salmon Bay student.
Typed poems should be submitted by May 15th to  [email protected].  Please specify your student's full name as you want it listed and their current grade.   Please make sure your student proofreads; poems will be published as submitted.
Poems will be compiled into a published anthology that will be available to families in June.

April is Poetry Month

This past week, the following poem was shared at our staff meeting. We wanted to share it with all of you as a way to wrap up Poetry Month and reflect upon our current experience.

When this is over, may we never again take for granted
A handshake with a stranger
Full shelves at the store
Conversations with neighbors
A crowded theater
Friday night out
The taste of communion
A routine checkup
The school rush each morning
Coffee with a friend
The stadium roaring
Each deep breath
A boring Tuesday
Life itself.

When this ends
may we find
that we have become
more like the people
we wanted to be
we were called to be
we hoped to be
and may we stay
that way - better
for each other
because of the worst.

Friday Sing
A team of teachers have been preparing a Friday Sing slideshow for families each week. This was initially distributed to elementary families but we are expanding to share the slideshow with all Salmon Bay Families. Note, that this is not actually a "live" event. You can choose anytime to sing together!

Possible Instructions after you click on the link:

1. If the slideshow does not open to a full screen slideshow, choose Slideshow > From Beginning.

2. You may also have to close the messages across the top.

3. The sound should start playing on its own for each slide that has sound. But you might have to click on the 3 dots (if you don't see them, hover over the speaker icon) and then Play if it doesn't.

4. If a slide doesn't seem to be changing in a reasonable amount of time, just tap the down arrow key or swipe on a touch screen.
