Virtual Poetry Night
Thank you to everyone who participated in our first Virtual Poetry Night. It was a pleasure to share poems with each other and hear such creative, fun and thoughtful original works. A special thank you to Nancy Gruber for hosting this event!

"Believe in Poetry"
Teacher Ben shared the following poem at Poetry Night this week. He graciously gave us permission to share it with all of you. Enjoy!

Believe in Poetry

Believe poetry is your mind mirrored on paper
Believe poetry is the mirror winking at you.
Believe poetry sees itself in you.
Believe poetry can give you a reason to care.
Believe poetry can be the reason.
Believe poetry is why we came to this party called Life on Earth.
Believe poetry is a bottomless bag of magic.
Believe poetry is out there somewhere and you must go on a quest to find it.
Believe poetry is in yourself somewhere and you must go on a quest to find it.
Believe poetry is Gandolf showing up at your door.
Believe poetry is the journey, the great battle, the treasure, and the return home.
Believe poetry is the power to capture demons.
Believe poetry is the power to help them become angels again.
Believe poetry can produce a door in thin air, a door to someplace you can't imagine until you step through it, outside the world you know.
Believe poetry is a miracle potion, and just one drop can fill you with fantasy sunshine or nightmare terror.
Believe poetry is the trial-and-error mad science of discovering the code of your soul.
Believe poetry is translating the ancient hieroglyphics of your dreams.
Believe poetry is the beginning of courage and the spur of action.
Believe poetry is the moment just when you thought you had to give up, but decided to go harder instead.
Believe poetry will find you, sooner or later, and bring you home every time you get lost.
Believe poetry has been on your feet all along, and you simply have to click your heels and say, "There's no place like poem."

Librarian's Corner

Hello families and staff,

Podcasts for kids? You bet! But Why? answers children's endless questions like, "Why do people have nightmares?" Pants on Fire uses a gameshow format to teach kids how to evaluate the quality of news media. Check out this list of 25 podcasts for elementary, middle school, and high school students: https://www.weareteachers.com/best-podcasts-for-kids/

Mo Willems (Elephant and Piggy, Don't Let Pigeon Drive the Bus, etc.) has finished his series of drawing with kids, but all the episodes can be found here.

Life Skills Video: Laundry
I have a new life-skills video that teaches kids how to help with laundry. I'm very clear telling students not to touch the laundry machines without an adult, but I encourage them to help in any way they can (e.g. putting all their dirty clothes in one place or folding clean clothes). The video can be found here: https://youtu.be/0djYZ_zSK6U

Seattle Public Schools has a new has created a new work group to give technical support to parents and students who have been issued SPS laptops. I am happy to help with logging in and finding resources for you, as always, but these folks downtown will be better for helping you solve technical problems with apps (e.g. "Schoology won't let me upload my video, saying I need the newest version of Adobe, but I have the newest version...") For that kind of support, parents and students can call 206-252-0100 or email [email protected]

Please reach out to me if you'd like any help accessing learning resources!

Take care,
Ben Gallup

Counselor's Corner

Hello Salmon Bay Families!

I hope that you all are keeping it together, staying safe, healthy and sane! I know, at least for me, that everyday is a new adventure with regard to my ability to persevere, be patient and not be perturbed. (Do you like my alliteration?) Trying to work everyday and sit on my middle schoolers to do their schoolwork is testing my skills as an empathetic parent. What I'm trying to say is Happy Mental Health Awareness Month!

During the month of May, there is a focus on mental health and supporting those around us who may suffer from a mental health disorder.  It is a great time for us all to be more understanding and empathetic of everyone around us who may be suffering. Now is the best time to check out resources on how best to take care of ourselves and support those we care about in our homes and our larger communities. That is why I am including a link here for some services focusing on telehealth for children from the Child Mind Institute. I have been really impressed with this organization recently. Please take a look at their website and let me know what you think:

Take care of yourselves out there!

As always if you need anything please don't hesitate to reach out to me,
Rob at [email protected] or
Jenny Brooks at [email protected]

Community Message from Brian

Brian's Message to the Salmon Bay Community:
Thank You for 20 Amazing Years!

I want to let you all know that I've accepted a position at the new Magnolia Elementary School for the 2020-21 school year. I'm really excited to take everything that I've learned here and help develop this startup program. Neil and an interview team have already hired an excellent teacher to work alongside Nicolette and Marian with next year's fifth graders.

Being a member of the Salmon Bay School community has certainly been one of the greatest privileges of my life. I got to work alongside Jan Wilson, one of Coho's founding teachers. I enjoyed the golden age of coming to school every day for nine years with my own two children, Isobel and Finn. I've made lifelong friends. And I've learned to love singing with others.

It's been an honor to be your child's teacher. As I've often said, every special thing about this school happens because of the support of the parents and community, so thank you for all you've done for me and for your children.
I'll stay in touch.

All the best,
Brian

FOSB News & Events

Friends of Salmon Bay (FOSB) is our school
parent teacher organization.

Next meeting: Thursday, June 11 at 7 p.m.

Thanks to all who joined the meeting last night. We had some great discussions about the current state of affairs and moving forward. Neil shared about how the school is using the Family Support Fund to help the community. Brian and Ticely spoke about the trials and tribulations of the emergency move from classrooms to distance learning. Shelly and Janelle gave the framework for next year's budget. Finally, Shelby guided us through the unfortunate decision to move the auction to next spring.

Everyone expressed gratitude for the efforts made by our community to help in these difficult times. As we move on, we are in dire need of new parents to step forward and learn to become leaders. A lot of what's special about our school comes from parents and their involvement at school. June will be our annual meeting where we'll vote on new leadership and the budget. Please contact us if you can take that step forward to join FOSB.

Thanks
Scott and Laura
