Staff Appreciation Week
This week, we celebrated staff appreciation week! Each staff member received a thank you card in the mail from FOSB and we surprised staff with an appreciation video. Thank you to everyone who was able to participate.

If you didn't get a chance to thank your student's teacher, it's not too late! Feel free to send an email at anytime. And remember, you can always reach out to Salmon Bay staff with questions, requests for support or simply to say hello. We miss all of you too!

PE Resources

Hello Salmon Bay Families!!!

Here is another fitness challenge to get you moving!  Again, I suggest doing this at least 4 days/week.  Challenge yourself to do one more set each time you try it!!!  So Far So Good Challenge.

Let me know if you have any questions!

Mr. G's Challenge
This week I want to challenge you to get outside and make an obstacle course in your backyard. Do you have steps? Do you have a slide? Can you chart a course across your yard hopping on one foot? Make up your own path and define your own challenge. Here's a short video of me and Xander at our house to inspire you.

It's Mother's Day on Sunday! A second recommendation is to help your Mom out with some chores around the house or in the garden. Your Mom will feel the love and you'll be getting exercise too!

HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY!

I want to take this space this week to say Happy Mother's Day to all of you awesome and amazing mothers out there. Being a mom is a tough job, way tougher than being a dad. I especially wanted to pay tribute to all of you single mothers out there. Raising children is difficult work and even more so if you are doing it alone, if you are the only adult in the home with one or more kids.

I am the product of a hardworking single mom. I lived with my mom full time for most of my childhood. She only got a break from me in the summers when I lived with my father. During the school year, I witnessed my mom work her 9-5 job, struggle to pay all our bills, make dinners (every night!) and put up with my rude adolescent attitude and behavior. So, here's to you, Moms! Enjoy your Sunday. Maybe this year instead of brunch you should get away for some quiet time.

Be well,

Music Notes
Dear Students, Staff, and Families,

These days of social distancing have reinforced in me just how much I truly value personal interactions in my everyday life, especially those interactions that involve making music.  One of the many blessings in my life has been to be able to make music with so many of you on our marimbas at Salmon Bay!  Drawing inspiration both from our times together, and from the times that we find ourselves in now, I composed this piece of music for marimba to share with you.  I hope you find as much joy in listening to it as I have in creating it.

I miss you all very much!

Family Support Fund

Dear Salmon Bay community,

In 2018 I joined an ad hoc FOSB committee to explore funding equity in Seattle with regards to PTA/PTO fundraising. The committee did an enormous amount of work contacting PTAs at other schools, SPS officials, and researching existing documentation. Our intention was to find a mechanism for Salmon Bay to share some it's funds with schools that didn't have our level PTA/PTO resources. In the end, we had difficulty finding a good mechanism and needed to continue working.

Unfortunately Covid-19 has presented us with a situation that fits this work. Broadview Thomson PK-8 has a school base that's been deeply affected by the pandemic.  The Family Support Fund we have created will help support both the Salmon Bay K-8 and Broadview Thomson PK-8 communities with basic needs during this closure and into the summer.

Please consider donating to the Family Support Fund.
Our goal is to raise $15,000. Contributions can be made online at:  salmonbayschool.maestroweb.com.

Thank you,

Scott Koch

FOSB News & Events

Friends of Salmon Bay (FOSB) is our school
parent teacher organization.

According to my mom, my grandfather, John Gallup, briefly joined the military as a response to the 1918 Flu pandemic in Seattle. I've read several interesting articles on the subject lately. An idea that I came across was one of building resilience in times of stress and adversity. Resilience isn't necessarily a personality trait but something you build, like muscle. One of the key components of resilience is connection. Not only connection to empathetic and understanding people but also groups that provide support and sense of purpose. I'd like to think FOSB is such a group.

Over the years being a part of FOSB I've met outstanding people, learned about public education, and contributed to an amazing school experience not only for my daughter but for all the students at Salmon Bay. There have been difficult times for sure, but we have always found a way to move forward. Right now, seems like a difficult time but I know that the people leading FOSB now will go above and beyond to lay the groundwork for the next leaders as those have done before us.

Please consider joining the FOSB team as an officer or board member. You'll meet some great people, learn how the school works, be able to advocate for programs you value, and boost the quality of education at Salmon Bay for all students.

Thanks
Scott Koch

From Admin

Hello Salmon Bay Families,

What a glorious day! The sun is shining and as humans are making way less noise outside currently, you can easily hear the birds sing their songs loudly and proudly. Thought you'd appreciate a silver lining given the challenging context we are all continuing to experience.

Speaking of appreciation, thanks so much for all of your kind words and acknowledgements during Staff Appreciation Week! Although the delivery was definitely different than years past, the intention was exactly the same and well-received. At our staff meeting this week, we played the video that was created and it warmed the hearts of all. We appreciate YOU appreciating US!

We've been fielding some questions regarding end of year promotion for 5th and 8th graders. Please know that we are already discussing and planning for this important Rite of Passage. We don't yet know exactly what it will look like but it will, indeed, be special and will fully honor the time spent learning and growing at Salmon Bay. We will be in touch when the plan has been further developed and we will definitely need community support for its' guaranteed success.

Until we see you again, please take good care of yourselves and all that you hold dear.

In partnership,

Darren, Annie and Neil

Salmon Bay Stays Home

Submit a Poem to 'Salmon Bay Stays Home'

Salmon Bay has a tradition of celebrating poetry every Spring, and this year may look different, but we are still celebrating.  ALL students are invited and encouraged to submit an original poem to the "Salmon Bay Stays Home" Poetry Anthology - poems can be of any length, on any topic, in any style.  The only 'rule' is that it must be an original poem by a current Salmon Bay student.

Typed poems should be submitted  by May 15th
to  SalmonBayStaysHome@yahoo.com Please specify your student's full name as you want it listed and their current grade.   Please make sure your student proofreads; poems will be published as submitted.   Poems will be compiled into a published anthology that will be available to families in June.

Elementary Class Reflections

Third Grade Staff Camp Reflections
Our third-grade students were scheduled to visit Camp Colman this week. While we are missing being physically together for these end-of-year experiences, we appreciate the efforts of our staff to think outside the box and our families' flexibility and willingness to jump right in!

Third grade teachers, Dave and Talia, shared these reflections on their class virtual experience this week.

Our classes would have gone to camp on Wednesday and we both felt that doing something for the kids and families would be a nice gesture. On Monday and Tuesday each of us did our Morning Meetings as a pajama day with stuffies to kick off camp week. On Wednesday, I invited families to a virtual evening campfire read aloud, which would have been our first night at camp. I chose to read two Northwest Coast Native American legends. The first was called "Loo-Wit, the Firekeeper" which is about how Mt. Hood, Mt. Adams and Mt. St. Helens were formed. The next story was called "Raven and Seagull". This legend is about how Seagull selfishly stole all the light plunging everyone into darkness and how Raven tricked Seagull and brought back the light. Both stories connect to our social studies unit and underscore the importance of storytelling in native cultures and how they teach lessons to subsequent generations.
Best,
Dave

To celebrate 3rd grade camp, my class participated in a few different activities this week, but the highlight was our virtual campfire on Thursday evening. We gathered together in front of our fireplaces and backyard fire pits to roast marshmallows and sing some fun camp songs. We had a fantastic time dancing, chanting and getting silly. Some of us even camped out in our backyards and living rooms for the night! Our campfire ended with an impromptu piano and violin concert by the 3rd graders. We all had a blast!
Best,
Talia

Friday Sing

Friday Sing
A team of teachers have been preparing a Friday Sing slideshow for families each week. This was initially distributed to elementary families but we are expanding to share the slideshow with all Salmon Bay Families. Note, that this is not actually a "live" event. You can choose anytime to sing together!

Possible Instructions after you click on the link:

1. If the slideshow does not open to a full screen slideshow, choose Slideshow > From Beginning.

2. You may also have to close the messages across the top.

3. The sound should start playing on its own for each slide that has sound. But you might have to click on the 3 dots (if you don't see them, hover over the speaker icon) and then Play if it doesn't.

4. If a slide doesn't seem to be changing in a reasonable amount of time, just tap the down arrow key or swipe on a touch screen.
