Halloween Celebrations
Salmon Bay Halloween celebrations always feature a wide variety of great costumes. Check out these coordinated costumes featuring staff members!

Student Inventions
Having finished the book,  "The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind" about a young Malawian inventor, the 7th and 8th grade students have stepped into the role of innovators themselves. Here, students in Lisa's LA class are critiquing each other's product design brochures. Next week, they will develop their ideas further to present to potential "investors" on Shark Tank!

Counselor's Corner

This past Wednesday, we had Brennon Ham, SPS Health Education Specialist present to all K-8 staff.   He gave a very enlightening and engaging training on gender, identity, and how best to support all students. He spoke about inclusion and the best practices for helping all developmental ages to understand gender and identify best. His talking points for Kindergarten through 3rd grade hold true for all of us:
  • There aren't any "girl" colors/toy/games or "boy" colors/toys/games, etc. People can simply like what they like.
  • Families come in all shapes and sizes.
  • It is wrong to call people names or put them down for any reason, including who they like, how they look, or who they are.

For more help, Jenny Brooks has a K-5 Gender Book Kit that has great books and information.

Here are some things we all can do:
  • Become familiar with local resources.
  • Commit to ongoing and evaluative self-assessment.
  • Continue your own learning about things that are unfamiliar to you. Use inclusive language.
  • Model using they/them pronouns.
  • Give examples of same and different gender situations.
  • Stand up for yourself and for others.
  • Hold your peers accountable.
  • Lift together.

Please come hear Brennon Ham present this coming Monday, November 4th.  He will be leading a discussion on gender and identity from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. See the announcement in this newsletter.

We are here to help students, families, and the school community.

Community Announcements

"Promised Land" film screening at JAMS
Wednesday November 6, in the Jane Addams MS Auditorium, 11051 34th Ave NE, Seattle, WA 98125
Doors open at 6:30pm, film begins at 7:00 pm.

"Promised Land" is a social justice documentary that follows two tribes in the Pacific Northwest: the Duwamish and the Chinook, as they fight for the restoration of treaty rights they've long been denied. In following their story, both in our regions shared heritage and in their modern struggles for federal recognition, the film examines a larger problem in the way that the government and society still look at tribal sovereignty.  Filmmakers and representatives of the tribes will be present to discuss their past and future with the community.

This event is free and open to parents, students and community members. More information about the film can be found at promisedlanddoc.com and on the film's Facebook page:  facebook.com/promisedlanddoc.

2019 Direct Giving Campaign

This year marks the 20 th  anniversary of Coho Elementary and New Options Middle School combining in Ballard to create Salmon Bay K-8. The rich history, culture and traditions of our school were woven together during the past two decades by families who helped create a unique learning community where all students could thrive.

In that spirit, we invite you to participate in the 2019 Direct Giving Campaign, one of our largest fundraisers of the year. Your donation will help us maintain a strong foundation and provide hands-on, enriching opportunities that extend beyond the traditional classroom curriculum.

Your family should have received a Direct Giving Campaign invitation in the mail. Making a donation is easy! Just return the enclosed card or make an online donation here
Remember to ask your employer to increase the impact of your charitable gift through matching. Our tax ID number is 91-1622350.

Campaign Goals
If we raise $70,000, we can provide all planned programming for our elementary and middle school students this school year.

If we reach our stretch goal of $90,000 , we can also provide more resources for assemblies and professional development, reinstate our FOSB mini-grant program, and invest in Salmon Bay Super Readers with funds for classrooms and the library collection.

20/20 Volunteer Challenge
In addition to donating generously to our Direct Giving Campaign, please join our 20/20 challenge by volunteering 20 hours at Salmon Bay for our 20th school year. Many of the activities that are most engaging for our students require strong volunteer support. Upcoming volunteer opportunities include working a shift at our Fall Book Fair and helping provide a Staff Meal during conferences.

Salmon Bay K-8 was built on commitment, creativity, collaboration and volunteerism. Thank you for your partnership as we work together to keep our school strong now and in the future.

Sister School Supply Drive

Sister School Supply Drive: Ocotber 25 - November 7th

Hello Salmon Bay Community,

For over a decade, the Salmon Bay Community has been partnering with Terry at Sister Schools in support of this supply drive to support children in rural Uganda. While there are many highlights that come from participating in this program, having individual students realize there efforts and donations are positively impacting and changing lives has to be among the best.

8th Grade WEB Leaders have decided the best way to organize this supply drive is through Homeroom classes. Each Homeroom will have a box or two for donated items to be collected and stored. If your student would like their photo taken with the specific item(s) they are donating, please have them write their name on it (post its or tape can work well) so Terry can identify the student and place them with their donated item(s) when he comes to take photos.

Sister Schools Supply Drive Timeline:
The supply drive will run from Friday, October 25th through 9:00 am on Thursday, November 7th.

Please see this flyer for more information about what items to donate.

Safety Skills & Empowerment Self-Defense
Salmon Bay Students Class Dates
We are thrilled to bring 3 self-defense classes to Salmon Bay. Instruction will be provided by Strategic Living LLC, experts in personal safety and self-defense training.

Personal Self-Defense for all genders, grades 4, 5 and 6
Learn empowering safety skills in a single, age appropriate class for girls and boys, grades 4-6 who are asking for more independence or heading to middle school soon.  This is a parent and child class, children must be accompanied by an adult.  Class will be on Nov 18 from 6:00 - 8:00. Cost is $45 per child, adults are free.  Click here for more information.

Personal Self-Defense for boys, grades 7 and 8
Self-defense for boys and male-identified students at Salmon Bay, grades 7 and 8, specifically designed for their needs and concerns. This class is for boys who are beginning to explore the world, often without direct adult supervision.  You may be concerned about peer pressure and a cultural environment that promotes unhealthy relationship behavior. They could use some skills to help make up for the experience they don't yet have. The class is two parts and will be held on consecutive Mondays, Dec 9th and 16th  from 6:00 - 7:30 pm. This is a youth only class. Cost is $65 per child. Click here for more information.

Empowerment Self-Defense for girls, grades 7 and 8
Self-defense and safety skills for girls and girl-identified students at Salmon Bay, grades 7 and 8. In this two-day class, your daughter will learn to recognize "red flags" that could mean someone may harm her, plan safe exits from iffy situations, practice physical moves (just in case), and learn to find supportive selfcare. The class is two parts and will be held on consecutive Wednesdays, Dec 3rd and 10th  from 6:30 - 8:00 pm. This is a youth only class. Cost is $65 per child. Click here for more information.

Notes From the Nurse
Student Records Update
In light of a review of Seattle Public School Policies, and a change in state law in response to the measles outbreak last year, there is an increased focus on ensuring all students medical records are up to date in our system. A number of notices were sent out to families this week where our school records were incomplete with a list of next steps. Please make sure that you provide the school nurse with updated vaccination records as soon as possible.

Your child must be fully vaccinated, be in process of getting vaccinated, or have a lab report that shows that your child is immune to the disease and does not need to be vaccinated. If you choose not to have your child vaccinated due to a religious, personal or medical reason, you must turn in a Certificate of Exemption form that is signed by you and a health care provider.

For more information go to this link or contact our school nurse Jesse Havens at (206) 252-1727 or by email: jehavens@seattleschools.org

Elementary News
Mr. G's Halloween Candy Drive
At Friday Sing this morning, Mr. G spoke with students about his Halloween candy drive and some goals for participation (to share, be healthy, be active, work as a team toward a goal and to have fun!).   Students who want to donate to the candy drive can bring their candy to the east gym anytime before next Friday. Participation is voluntary. All collected candy is donated to support military families.

Elementary Enrichment Fees Due Now
During the school year, your child will participate in field trips, artist-in-residence programs, or other special class projects.  Instead of asking for payment each time one of these activities takes place, we ask parents to pay one fee in the beginning of the school year. This fee is called the Enrichment Fee (or field trip fee).   Our elementary enrichment fee is $100 per student.

Payment Options?   We have a new payment system (SchoolPay) that allows you to easily make and track payments throughout the year. You can reach the new payment portal by logging in to your student's SPS Source account. Click here  for instructions on how to access your student's Source account and the SchoolPay system. You may also pay this fee by dropping off a check (payable to Salmon Bay School) in the volunteer coordinator's office. We ask that all enrichment fees be paid by December 1st.  Scholarship funds are available.
