Lessons from Mr. Rogers
As we move into our darkest months here in Seattle, being intentional in our relationships and interactions with others can help spread light and warmth. This past Wednesday was World Kindness Day and I saw many references to Mr. Rogers- several people even wore cardigan sweaters to honor him.
One particular article from UC Berkeley resonated with me- it included seven lessons from Mr. Rogers:
- It is okay to feel whatever it is we feel.
- Our feelings aren't an excuse for bad behavior.
- Other people are different from us- and just as complex as we are.
- It's our responsibility to care for the most vulnerable.
- We can work to make a difference right where we are.
- It's important to make time to care for ourselves.
- We are neighbors.
Thank you for being a part of the Salmon Bay community and for looking out for each other. If you need help during this holiday season, please reach out to Rob or to me.
In community,
Jenny B

Salmon Bay Holiday Giving |
Greetings Salmon Bay Families!
Last year we added to our tradition of supporting all members of our community with the first annual Salmon Bay Holiday Giving program - a new tradition we're happy to bring back this season. From December 2nd through December 18th we will be collecting gifts for those families in our school who could use some help this holiday season. We're sending this notice out so everyone who would like to participate - either as a recipient or a donor - has the details.
To Get A Gift: Please either return a request form (paper copies will be sent home next week or you can download a form here) to either school counselor Jenny Brooks ([email protected]) or Rob Bright ([email protected]) by November 22nd.
Y
our information will be kept strictly confidential.
To Give A Gift: We will send out a SignUp Genius on December 2nd with all wishes listed. Simply purchase what is noted and return it to the front office - unwrapped and labelled with the family number - no later than the morning of December 18th and we'll handle the rest.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact parent Julie Lowe at 206-601-4933 or [email protected]
Thank you all - it's going to be a great holiday season!

Safety Skills & Empowerment Self-Defense |
Salmon Bay Students Class Dates
We are thrilled to bring 3 self-defense classes to Salmon Bay. Instruction will be provided by Strategic Living LLC, experts in personal safety and self-defense training.
Personal Self-Defense for boys, grades 7 and 8
Self-defense for boys and male-identified students at Salmon Bay, grades 7 and 8, specifically designed for their needs and concerns. This class is for boys who are beginning to explore the world, often without direct adult supervision. You may be concerned about peer pressure and a cultural environment that promotes unhealthy relationship behavior. They could use some skills to help make up for the experience they don't yet have. The class is two parts and will be held on consecutive Mondays, Dec 9th and 16th from 6:00 - 7:30 pm. This is a youth only class. Cost is $65 per child. Click here for more information.
Empowerment Self-Defense for girls, grades 7 and 8
Self-defense and safety skills for girls and girl-identified students at Salmon Bay, grades 7 and 8. In this two-day class, your daughter will learn to recognize "red flags" that could mean someone may harm her, plan safe exits from iffy situations, practice physical moves (just in case), and learn to find supportive selfcare. The class is two parts and will be held on consecutive Tuesdays, Dec 3rd and 10th from 6:30 - 8:00 pm. This is a youth only class. Cost is $65 per child. Click here for more information.

Elementary Enrichment Fees Due Now
During the school year, your child will participate in field trips, artist-in-residence programs, or other special class projects. Instead of asking for payment each time one of these activities takes place, we ask parents to pay one fee in the beginning of the school year. This fee is called the Enrichment Fee (or field trip fee).
Our elementary enrichment fee is $100 per student.
Payment Options?
We have a new payment system (SchoolPay) that allows you to easily make and track payments throughout the year. You can reach the new payment portal by logging in to your student's SPS Source account. Click
here
for instructions on how to access your student's Source account and the SchoolPay system. You may also pay this fee by dropping off a check (payable to Salmon Bay School) in the volunteer coordinator's office. We ask that all enrichment fees be paid by December 1st. Scholarship funds are available.

The Afterschool Program Needs YOU!
As you know, we have a vibrant after school program, with over 14 offerings for our students, ranging from woodworking, cooking, arts and crafts, to unicycles with Mr. G. Many families rely on these convenient and unique classes for extra childcare and enrichment. We've been lucky to have many talented, hard-working volunteers over the years build this program to where it is, and we're over-the-moon with gratitude for all they've done.
WE NEED YOU! Unfortunately, many of our amazing committee members will need to step down from their roles soon. We need new, enthusiastic volunteers to administer the program to keep it going. Ample assistance will be available from Jodi, the FOSB chairs, and past committee members.
If you love this program and want to see it thrive and continue, we would love your support! Please contact Laura Feola at or Scott Koch, FOSB chairs, at [email protected] for more information and details. This is just one of the many great things volunteers make happen for our kids - thank you for considering!
