Seen in the Hallways

Fifth Grade Field Trip
The fifth graders had a field study at Carkeek Park today to see the spawning salmon! They saw several large fish in Piper's Creek and enjoyed learning about salmon habitat, their anatomy and life cycle, and how we can change our behaviors to better protect salmon habitat.

Molly Brooks, Author & Illustrator
On Monday, students had a visit from Molly Brooks, author and illustrator of Sanity & Tallulah. The audience of 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students was thrilled to meet a big-shot graphic novel creator. The event also generated excitement for this year's Global Reading Challenge, since the first Sanity & Tallulah is one of the selections for the Challenge. Staff were pleased that Molly highlighted the same writing process that they've been working to impart to the students.

Kindergarten Art Work
We love these water color paintings from Gabi's class currently on display in the lobby! We hope you'll take a moment to view them, and other student work on display in our hallways, when you are in the building for conferences next week.

Afterschool Programs
The Afterschool Program Needs YOU!
As you know, we have a vibrant after school program, with over 14 offerings for our students, ranging from woodworking, cooking, arts and crafts, to unicycles with Mr. G.  Many families rely on these convenient and unique classes for extra childcare and enrichment.  We've been lucky to have many talented, hard-working volunteers over the years build this program to where it is, and we're over-the-moon with gratitude for all they've done.

WE NEED YOU!  Unfortunately, many of our amazing committee members will need to step down from their roles soon.  We need new, enthusiastic volunteers to administer the program to keep it going.  Ample assistance will be available from Jodi, the FOSB chairs, and past committee members.

If you love this program and want to see it thrive and continue, we would love your support!  Please contact Laura Feola at or Scott Koch, FOSB chairs, at  [email protected] for more information and details.  This is just one of the many great things volunteers make happen for our kids - thank you for considering!

Counselor's Corner
'Tis the season for gratitude!

As the Harvard Medical School website reminds us and research has proven: "gratitude is strongly and consistently associated with greater happiness. Gratitude helps people feel more positive emotions, relish good experiences, improve their health, deal with adversity, and build strong relationships." I know for me, recently, I have been feeling more stress with my newish job, two middle schoolers, a kitchen remodel, and a spouse with a job change. Feeling those pressures have been a challenge for me, but when I started to think about gratitude and made a mental gratitude list my stress lowered. I know when I take time every day to mindfully meditate and write a gratitude list I can breathe deeply, reflect, and show up as my best self.

Here is a brief list of ways to cultivate gratitude:

  • Write a 'thank-you' note to someone or to yourself
  • Thank someone verbally
  • Keep a gratitude journal or make a list for a few days to see how it changes your mindset
  • Count your blessings by making a list once a week with three to five things that went right
  • Mindfully meditate for a few minutes each day
  • Give back or as they say "pay it forward"

With Gratitude,
 Rob

Thank you for being a part of the Salmon Bay community and for looking out for each other.  If you need help during this holiday season, please reach out to Jenny B or to me.

Salmon Bay Holiday Giving

Greetings Salmon Bay Families!

Last year we added to our tradition of supporting all members of our community with the first annual Salmon Bay Holiday Giving program - a new tradition we're happy to bring back this season. From December 2nd through December 18th we will be collecting gifts for those families in our school who could use some help this holiday season. We're sending this notice out so everyone who would like to participate - either as a recipient or a donor - has the details.

To Get A Gift: Please either return a request form (paper copies will be sent home next week or you can download a form here) to either school counselor Jenny Brooks ([email protected]) or Rob Bright ([email protected]) by November 22nd.
Y our information will be kept strictly confidential.

To Give A Gift: We will send out a SignUp Genius on December 2nd with all wishes listed. Simply purchase what is noted and return it to the front office - unwrapped and labelled with the family number - no later than the morning of December 18th and we'll handle the rest.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact parent Julie Lowe at 206-601-4933 or [email protected]

Thank you all - it's going to be a great holiday season!

Middle School News

Middle School Adopt - A Family Program
At Salmon Bay, we offer families an opportunity to participate in two holiday giving programs. The first program supports Salmon Bay School community members (see above for more information). The second program is in partnership with Broadview Emergency Shelter and Transitional Housing.
We've been participating in this program for the past 10+ years.

The parents and children at Broadview shelter are all experiencing homelessness due to domestic violence and rely on the shelter for basic necessities and transitional services. Your donations help to give the parents a joyful holiday and provide those necessities and gifts they would otherwise struggle to supply for their children.

This year, middle school homerooms will be sponsoring 4 families and collecting general donations of board games, general gifts and diapers size 4-6, for other families that rely on the shelter (new and drop in families throughout the holidays). Individual homerooms have organized this giving opportunity in different ways. Please check with your student or check your email to see what your student's homeroom teacher has planned.

2019 - 2020 WEP

If your student has not turned in a signed WEP registration form, please do so ASAP.

If your student has turned in their completed form, you should have received an email this evening confirming the program in which your student was placed.

In December, you'll receive a packet with detailed program information about your student's specific program and any required permission forms and waivers.

If you have questions regarding WEP, please email Jodi Russell.

Thanks so much,
Glyde & students
