Fifth Grade Partnership with Marra Farm

Salmon Bay fifth graders have been making an annual service learning trip to Marra Farm in Seattle's Southpark neighborhood for ten years now. One of only two working agricultural spaces in our city, Marra Farm's 8.7 acres include a P-Patch, a Mien community garden, and the Giving Garden where we volunteer our time. Over the years we've been asked to help in many ways: we weed the garden beds that provide produce for the local food bank, clean out greenhouses, spread wood chips on the trails, turn and sieve compost, and more. While we're there, we learn how small farming practices differ from those at large corporate farms and how communities can work together to create sustainable spaces.

Discover U
Next week is Discover U Week. A week that schools in the Seattle area focus on college, careers, how to get there and why it is important to think about at any age. We have created a plan to focus on talking about college and different careers in homeroom and in classrooms, mostly at the middle school level.

Please think about ways to integrate conversations about post-secondary options and careers with your children. Most young people love to hear about your high school or college experience, how you decided on a major, the process you went through to get to college or a training program, how you came into the job/career you have now, and career ideas you had in elementary or middle school. If you would like more information you can look here: www.discoveruwa.org

Wed, Oct 23, 2019  6:30 PM - 8:30 PM
Phinney Neighborhood Association, 6532 Phinney Ave N.

Overindulgence is giving your child too much of anything that can delay their development. This can include money, space, time, energy, and attention. Parents overindulge children from a "good heart." Unfortunately, overindulgence doesn't help children or families because it can present unexpected risks for adult life and major discomforts in young families. In this educational event, parents will explore overindulgence and ways to teach their children how to be accountable and responsible for themselves and towards others.   More info, and free registration here

Garden Work Party Tomorow

Join us for a Garden Work Party on Saturday

Saturday, October 12th
9 am - Noon
Salmon Bay School Grounds

Did you know it is up to our Salmon Bay School community to maintain and enhance the landscaping around our school? The district mows the grass and cleans up the leaves but the weeding, mulching and new plantings are up to us!

This weekend will be focused on tackling the weeds that have grown up over the summer. We will start at the front of the school and work our way around the building. You don't have to be an experienced gardener to come help pull some weeds and move waste to the compost bins. Many hands make the work light! Come by yourself or your family. If you can't make it the whole time, consider coming for an hour or two!

Water and snacks will be available as well as some adult tools provided by the district. If you have any metal spring rakes, please bring them.

We look forward to seeing you. Please spread the word. Invite someone to join us. It's a great way to spend time with friends, build community and help the school!

Last Weekend to Order School Spirit Wear

School T-shirt & Sweatshirt Orders
We are happy to share an opportunity to purchase school t-shirts and sweatshirts through a new online store.

Orders must be placed by midnight on October 13th.

We are continuing to work with our same local vendor, just offering a more streamlined ordering process for families. Once we receive the completed orders, we will deliver them to your student at school (or you can arrange to pick up your items).

From Admin

Dear Salmon Bay Families,

We currently have an opening for a Parent Representative on the Salmon Bay Building Leadership Team (BLT).  Might you be interested? The Building Leadership team is comprised of staff, administration and parents that work to coordinate the building's Professional Development Calendar, the Comprehensive School Improvement Plan (CSIP), Budget Allocation, as well as attending to the overall direction of the school and our community relationships.

We have two parents that serve on the BLT at any given time - generally for a two-year cycle.  Parents interested in serving on the BLT should email Neil with their past experience and how this would benefit the work of the BLT by 10/24/19.   Per our BLT bylaws, parent representatives will be selected from among applicants by the sitting BLT.

The BLT meets once or twice a month from 7:30 - 8:30 a.m. on Thursday mornings.

Thanks for considering!  Feel free to also email with questions if you would like to learn more about the role and the work of the BLT.

Neil Gerrans
Salmon Bay Principal

Safe Drop Off Procedures
Please Help Us Keep Students Safe
For student and family safety, do not drop off or pick up students on NW 65th Street or next to the bus zone on 19th AvenueWe have seen some near misses on 19th Avenue during our first month of school.

Please drop off and pick up in the loading zone on the east side of the building (18th Avenue). We ask that drivers do not drive north on 18th Avenue. Limiting the street to southbound traffic helps our crossing guard manage congestion and ensures all students are leaving and entering cars from the curb side of the street.
Salmon Bay School Directory

Action Requested: School Directory
This year, we will not be printing the directory but will be sending an electronic PDF copy to all community members.  Participation in the directory is voluntary and each family can select the information they would like included (phone numbers, email, street address, etc.).  We will also include homeroom class lists and a staff directory.

To participate in the directory this year, please complete the online form found here.

Please complete only the information you would like included in the directory and omit information you do not want shared. For example, if you do not wish to have your home address included, please skip that information when filling out the form. Please double-check your information before submitting it.

You may enter information for up to 4 students on the form. If you need to add additional students, please use the notes section at the end of the form.

Elementary Enrichment Fees Due Now
During the school year, your child will participate in field trips, artist-in-residence programs, or other special class projects.  Instead of asking for payment each time one of these activities takes place, we ask parents to pay one fee in the beginning of the school year. This fee is called the Enrichment Fee (or field trip fee).   Our elementary enrichment fee is $100 per student.

Payment Options?   We have a new payment system (SchoolPay) that allows you to easily make and track payments throughout the year. You can reach the new payment portal by logging in to your student's SPS Source account. Click here  for instructions on how to access your student's Source account and the SchoolPay system. You may also pay this fee by dropping off a check (payable to Salmon Bay School) in the volunteer coordinator's office. We ask that all enrichment fees be paid by December 1st.  Scholarship funds are available.
