Ballard Market Receipt Drop Box
To make it easier for families to drop off Ballard Market receipts, we've placed a collection box in the back alley (near the Book Return). When you come to pick up student materials or books, please bring your receipts and place them in the collection box. Be sure to close the lid securely when finished!

Each year, FOSB (Friends of Salmon Bay) receives substantial income from the collection of Ballard Market receipts.  It may seem like your small pile of receipts won't amount to much, but our collective pile of receipts adds up to quite a bit!

Counselor's Corner

Roots of Empathy
Roots of Empathy is a program, originally started in Canada, that we conduct in our 5th grade classrooms. Each class receives 27 lessons over the course of the school year on topics ranging from feeding and diapering a baby, to emotions, safety, and family traditions.  Nine of these lessons include the same family and baby, which allows the students to learn first-hand by one of their most influential teachers- the baby.  The ultimate goal is to foster empathy, decrease bullying behaviors, and increase positive connections- now and in the future.

Each fall, we look for two families with which to partner- one for each of our 5th grade classrooms.  Babies should be born this past summer and be available throughout the school-year for scheduled visits (currently virtual) with the classroom.   To learn more:  Roots of Empathy- About,  The Babies Teaching Kindness in School (BBC)

If you know of a family who would be good in this role, please connect them with me.
Thank you!  -Jenny Brooks, School Counselor, [email protected]

Middle School Club Opportunities
Hello everyone! I hope that you are doing well. Just so you know, Saturday is National Clean Your Virtual Desktop Day. So, we have that to be thankful for and remind us to spend a few moments deleting some old files.

I want to take this time to let you know about a couple of clubs that are happening on Microsoft Teams for our student community.
  • The first one is the 6th Grade Connection Club which meets Wednesdays at 11:15-11:45. This is a club that is focused on helping 6th graders get to know each other and have some social connection. We would love your 6th grader to join the fun, especially if your student is new to Salmon Bay this year.
  • The other club that started last week was the United Body of Students of Color. They are meeting Fridays at 12:15-12:45. This club is facilitated by two high school Freshmen and Salmon Bay alumni who want to make a positive difference and support students of color. Salmon Bay staff member Malik Prince is also lending his support.
If your student would like to join either of these clubs please have them email me at [email protected] Thank you!

Flu Shot Clinics
City of Seattle Office of the Mayor asked Seattle Visiting Nurse Association and SPS to conduct more flu clinics on our school sites.
There are now 24 more dates added from October 19-30.

We urge everyone to get a flu shot this year to protect yourself and the community.  Parents may register all family members for a flu shot online. Please pick an appointment time and date from the available options. Bring insurance card to the clinic. Uninsured children and adults can get the flu shot for no cost. To sign up for a "drive-through" flu shot, please fill out the Seattle Visiting Nurse Association ONLINE FORM: https://www.seattleschools.org/departments/health_services/flu_clinics

* To register all family members for a flu shot online, complete registration for each member receiving a flu shot separately. Choose the same time slot for each family member registration. If the time slot fills up before you are able to register all family members, please register the remaining family members in the nearest available time slot. You can all still come to the clinic at the same time.

If you have any questions, please e-mail [email protected]

Thank you,

Suzanne

Email your alley name suggestions to Britta by Tuesday, October 20th. We'll review them all and hopefully announce the new name by Friday, October 23rd.

From Admin

Good Afternoon Salmon Bay Families,

As we move deeper into fall with trees turning vibrant shades and a new crispness in the air, it becomes clear that things will change. Even though these days blend one into the next and it's hard to remember whether something happened on Tuesday this week, Tuesday three weeks ago, or maybe not even on a Tuesday at all - we are creating positive changes in our students' lives. The connections we're making with them, the care and dedication we offer them, and the lessons we're teaching them are adding up to a positive sum at a moment in time they will remember for the rest of their lives. "eLearning is changing. And, we will see new models, new technologies and designs emerge. So, let's drop the "e" - or at least give it a new and wider definition." - Elliot Masie

Have a restful weekend,

Suro, Neil, and Darren

Pizza Friday
We're trying things to bring our community together during the pandemic when we can't meet in person. In years past we've had Pizza on the Playground with Veraci pizza. So, in that vane, we thought we might try Pizza Friday Cooking and Eating show, part Julia Child and part Guy Fieri where everyone is the star. Here's the idea:.
  • Prep a meal, it doesn't have to be pizza.
  • Join the zoom meeting at 6:30pm on Friday.
  • Show off your cooking and presentation skills for all to admire.
  • Enjoy seeing and chatting with our community.
  • We'll keep it short and simple and conclude things at 7:00pm.

November FOSB Meeting
Our next meeting is Thursday, November 12 (7:00p), zoom link below. We'll be voting in new Directors. Directors are trustees of FOSB and are responsible for oversight of all FOSB activities, especially those involving the organization's governance and finances. We need you to help keep our school strong and bring our community together. Directors are asked to come to as many meetings as possible throughout the year and give feedback. Please consider joining FOSB as a Director, we need your voice. More info can be found here.

We're also gearing up for our Direct Giving drive. We have a substantial goal this year to make up for not being able to have our auction last year. Keep an eye out at the beginning of November for the start.
