 Seen Online
Young Activists
Kindergarteners have been learning about activists during social studies. We talked about what it means to stand up or say something when you notice something is not right or fair. This week, we read Kamala and Maya's Big Idea by Meena Harris. In the book, Kamala and Maya notice their courtyard is not being used - could they figure out a way to add a playground for all the kids in their building? What if someone says "no" to their big ideas? Luckily, these two activists persisted and called on their community to help so everyone could enjoy a new playground. Kindergarteners made connections to a time they worked hard on something and noticed how they felt once they were able to accomplish their goal.

Elementary & Middle School Photos Needed
We need Halloween photos for the yearbook(s)!
Although COVID-19 has presented us with many challenges through remote learning, we are still creating yearbooks for the 2020-21 school year at Salmon Bay! As Halloween is getting closer, we are
Photo by Kevin J. of Fletcher K and Galyn M. taken last year
looking for pictures to include in the yearbooks. Although there are not going to be the typical Halloween festivities at school this year, we are asking that families send in photographs of Halloween costumes and decorations, and photos of kids making stuff for the occasion.

As the student editors of the 2020-21 yearbooks (K-5 and Middle School), we have created folder(s) for you to send in photographs through Microsoft Teams.

Please submit your Halloween photos by November 13th

K-5 Photographs can be emailed here: [email protected]

Middle School Photographs can be emailed here: [email protected]
  • Please keep your images school appropriate. Not too scary or gory.
  • Provide student name(s) and homeroom teacher of any students in the photo.
  • Make sure that your photograph(s) are clear and are well-lighted.
  • Limit of three photos per family.
  • Keep in mind these photos are for publishing.
Thanks so much,
Student editors: Marley H, Brynn C, Hazel E, Zoe T, Glory L and Oliver C.

Thanksgiving Food Assistance
If your family is need of food support for the Thanksgiving holiday, please reach out to Rob or Jenny.  We are able to support families with gift cards during this time, as resources allow.

Bullying Prevention
October is National Bullying Prevention Month.  Throughout students' time at Salmon Bay, we teach lessons and have discussions about topics such as: making friends, kindness, inclusion, managing conflict, problem solving, celebrating differences, as well as bullying prevention.  We also conduct several programs to promote community and belonging such as Roots of Empathy, Friday Sing, WEP, WEB, and Homeroom/Advisory (to name a few).

Here are the points that we emphasize when we discuss bullying:
Bullying is:
  • mean behavior with intent to cause fear, embarrassment, or exclude
  • on-going or repeated
  • one-sided
  • unfair and unwanted
  • often has a power imbalance
  • can be physical, verbal, emotional, or done through technology

Bullying is different from mean behavior, which all of us express from time to time, if it happens once or isn't on-going.  Bullying also differs from peer conflict, which goes back and forth and is not one-sided.  We encourage kids to stand up for themselves or others when possible to make sure it is known that the behavior is hurtful and unwanted.  If your child is experiencing bullying behavior or knows that it is occurring to someone else (as a bystander), please encourage your child to talk with a trusted adult or let a staff member at Salmon Bay know that it is occurring.  We want all kids and families to feel safe at Salmon Bay.  If you would like further information or resources about Bullying, please reach out to Rob or Jenny and we would be happy to provide them.

Themed Book Kits
Jenny Brooks has put together several picture book kits on various themes- some also include material for adults.  Themes include: Grief, Friendship, Gender, Divorce/Changing Families, Social Skills, and others could be put together on request.  Jenny will deliver the kit to your doorstep and pick it up when you're done.

As always, if you or your student is struggling and you would like our support, please reach out.  We are available for phone conversations, Teams meetings, and outdoor meet-ups as possible.

Warmly,
Jenny Brooks, Elementary Counselor, [email protected]

FOSB's SED (Special Education & Disability) Committee would like to invite you to attend this upcoming event.

Intersectionality & Disability Justice: Bringing Our Full Selves to School
Monday, October 26
7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
Free Registration here

We cannot create schools where every student belongs and thrives unless we address the intersection of racism and ableism, particularly low expectations of disabled students who are multiply marginalized and oppressed. Join this conversation to understand how to act in solidarity with disability justice movements, celebrate disability pride and identity, and ensure that there is "nothing about us, without us."

Presented by Carrie Basas, Director of the Governor's Office of the Education Ombuds

Thanks to the support of the Special Education Department of Seattle Public Schools, this event will have ASL, Spanish, and Somali interpreters.

Nurse's Corner
Flu Shot Clinics
City of Seattle Office of the Mayor asked Seattle Visiting Nurse Association and SPS to conduct more flu clinics on our school sites.
There are now 24 more dates added from October 19-30.

We urge everyone to get a flu shot this year to protect yourself and the community.  Parents may register all family members for a flu shot online. Please pick an appointment time and date from the available options. Bring insurance card to the clinic. Uninsured children and adults can get the flu shot for no cost. To sign up for a "drive-through" flu shot, please fill out the Seattle Visiting Nurse Association ONLINE FORM: https://www.seattleschools.org/departments/health_services/flu_clinics

* To register all family members for a flu shot online, complete registration for each member receiving a flu shot separately. Choose the same time slot for each family member registration. If the time slot fills up before you are able to register all family members, please register the remaining family members in the nearest available time slot. You can all still come to the clinic at the same time.

If you have any questions, please e-mail [email protected]

Thank you,

Pizza Friday - DIY Dinner with Friends Tonight

Pizza Friday
We're trying things to bring our community together during the pandemic when we can't meet in person. In years past we've had Pizza on the Playground with Veraci pizza. So, in that vane, we thought we might try Pizza Friday Cooking and Eating show, part Julia Child and part Guy Fieri where everyone is the star. Here's the idea:.
  • Prep a meal, it doesn't have to be pizza.
  • Join the zoom meeting at 6:30pm on Friday.
  • Show off your cooking and presentation skills for all to admire.
  • Enjoy seeing and chatting with our community.
  • We'll keep it short and simple and conclude things at 7:00pm.

Do you have a fun idea to bring our community together? Let us know and we'll help make it happen ([email protected]).

From Admin

Dear Salmon Bay Families and Community Members,

With our country's election just 10 days away, politics and strong opinions are part of the daily currency these days on the radio, news reports, online advertising, and social media feeds.

Elections are teachable moments.   Part of our commitment as a school is to engage in the work of social justice by examining identity, building knowledge and developing skills to challenge inequities.  The vote has always been a powerful tool and is one that we encourage all families to utilize and to also talk with your students about.  What are the issues that matter to you?  What has shaped your views on them?  Where have your views most changed across the years?

Many teachers are inviting students to participate in mock elections, and some classes will facilitate discourse with students as ideas and perspectives come up.  We ask that parents and guardians support teacher efforts to nurture thoughtful, respectful conversation.   As we work together to support development of our students into compassionate, creative and independent thinkers that our country and society need in these times and into the future.

Take good care,

Neil, Suro and Darren

Volunteer Needs

Your Help Is Needed
We are working with teachers, administration and district staff to implement a volunteer program during remote school. Although volunteering might look a little different right now, we still need parent support to offer many activities, events and support to our students/ families.

Please email Jodi Russell, Volunteer Coordinator, if you can help meet these current needs:

Virtual Book Fair Support - Help organize supporting materials (like book recommendations) for the book fair. Work on your computer, at home, flexible timing.

Middle School Club Leader(s) - Support middle school students participating in virtual clubs. students have expressed specific desire to have the following CLUBs: Gaming, Super Smash Bros, Speedrunning, Videography. It seems that the "gaming" minded ones could be potentially combined in some way. Also, we have a parent who is seeking a partner to co-lead Chess. Must be available during club meetings (one day / week from 12:15 - 1:15 pm).

Sign Maker - We just announced the new name of our school alley, Panther Passage! We'd love to have a weatherproof sign that can remain outside in the alley this winter.

FOSB DirectorsFOSB works because of parents like you stepping forward and volunteering. We need new Directors every year to help oversee and guide the organization into the future.  Please consider joining FOSB as a Director, we need your voice. More info can be found here.

Check this space next week for more  information about elementary classroom support. Other ideas, thoughts or questions? Email Jodi, Volunteer Coordinator.

FOSB Fact
Did you know that FOSB grants money to the school each year to provide supplies for teachers? Part of the grant we gift to Salmon Bay includes dollars specifically set aside to support classroom needs. Teachers identify these needs and the money we raise through direct giving helps ensure that the teacher needs can be met.
So far this year, many of the items purchased using these classroom funds have focused on support for teachers in the online/remote learning environment.

Auction Update
This year's FOSB Auction will be a live online event! Mark your calendars for Thursday, March 11. Big plans are already underway and the auction committee is dreaming up all sorts of wacky fun for our community. Do you want to join the fun, dynamic team planning this year's auction? The first planning meeting will be held via zoom on November 4 from 7-8 p.m. Please rsvp to Auction Chair Shelby Reynolds ([email protected]). A participation link will be sent to all interested participants in advance of the meeting.
