Mary K joined us this week for Friday Sing and workshops with elementary students. It is great to have her spirit and energy with us in the building teaching songs and being a role model! Mary K will be working with students a number of times leading up to the Lantern Festival in December.

NEW: Morning CrossFit with Mr. G
Join Mr. G for a fun workout before school on Monday and Tuesday mornings during November and December. You'll workout in a circuit like setting rope skipping, using medicine balls, pushing/ pulling different equipment, running and most importantly, using your own body weight to get a workout.

Attention all Middle School Girls interested in playing Basketball for the 2017/18 season!
The basketball season is right around the corner. There are forms that every player must complete and turn in to be eligible to play. Form packets can be found in a folder on the wall next to room 127, please take one and return or place in my box in the office.

Video Production Class Camera
Our new video production class is an exciting exploratory option. Students will not only learn skills in photography but theywill explore how to tell a coherent story. They will learn to communicate with an audience and also with each other, as they work collaboratively within a team.
The opportunities for students to grow individually, collectively and creatively are endless. However, their experience depends on having the right equipment.

College Bound Scholarship
How does four years of free college tuition sound? Bound scholarship students receive 4-yrs of free tuition, plus fees and a small book allowance at any of the 67 participating Washington state college they earn admission to.
College Bound students promise to:
- Graduate with a 2.0 GPA or higher.
- Be good members of their community and not be convicted of a felony.
- Apply to an eligible college and submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) their senior year.
Is your middle school student eligible?
If they are in 7th or 8th grade and your family meets the income requirements that would qualify them for federal free/reduced lunch program or your family receives basic food or TANF benefits they would qualify. However, if your child is not signed up for the free lunch program, they aren't on the College Bound scholarship list. In this case, you would need to apply directly for the scholarship (Gail can do this for you). Please email Gail if you have any questions about eligibility or are not currently on the free/reduced lunch but want to sign up for the scholarship.

For Improved Library Technology
Did you know that the Ballard High School Library is one of 15 finalists for the Farmers Insurance Thank A Teacher Dream Big grant of $100,000?
Five grants will be awarded after public voting closes later this month.
Anyone in the community (over age 18) can vote online. You can also vote every day.
Ballard's grant proposal is for The John Stanford Learning Commons at Ballard High School. The library is a vision for a social, cultural, and technological center where students, faculty and other users can gather and work collaboratively with digital and print media under one roof. If BHS receives this grant, it could impact services for many Salmon Bay graduates and community members!

The Direct Giving Campaign needs Many Hands!
The Direct Giving Campaign runs from October 9th through November 17th. Our goal is to raise $75,000. So far we have raised over $15,000, lets keep up the good work!
FOSB works with Salmon Bay to close the gap between the programming Seattle Public Schools funds and the programming we want our kids to have. The Direct Giving Campaign helps FOSB pay for:
whole child support, homework club, scholarships, technology, playground equipment, teacher grants, art supplies, physical education equipment, the directory,
and much more.

You can also drop off your donation in the front office any day or or during one of our Drive By Donation days - Friday 10/20, 10/27, 11/3, or 11/17. There will be opportunities to win prizes!

Looking for a great way to support Salmon Bay? We need parent volunteers to work one on one supporting students in reading.

It's October! The leaves are turning, pumpkins are appearing on doorsteps and the hallways are beginning to fill with conversations about Halloween costumes. When planning with your student, please keep these guidelines in mind for school costumes.
 Halloween Costume Guidelines
As we approach Halloween, we want to make sure our school is a safe and welcoming place for everyone. If your child chooses to dress up in a costume, please make sure the outfit is appropriate.
All costumes should adhere to school guidelines for modesty, messages and safety. In addition, please follow these guidelines.
- Costumes need to be non-violent in nature - violence is inappropriate at school and other children can be frightened by blood and gore representations.
- Weapons and toy weapons of any kind are not allowed.
- Avoid costumes that are dressing as people from other cultures.
- For safety reasons, please do not include masks as a part of costumes sent to school.
- Make up, if used, should not be disguising the identity of the wearer e.g., whiskers and freckles, not face paint.
Halloween Parade
You are invited to join elementary students for the annual Halloween Parade at 2 pm on the upper field/track (weather permitting). Classroom teachers will share specific plans regarding classroom celebrations.
Middle School Block Party
Our student government (ASB) has planned a third floor block party to celebrate Halloween. Students will enjoy a variety of activities along with snacks, beverage ad candy. Sign up to chaperone or donate snacks

Friday Sing Update
A quick update: So far this year, our vision has been to have several guest artists for the Fall quarter. On the 27th, Mary K McNeill will return for a Halloween Sing along with another artist, Sandy Buchner. Sandy, who teaches our afterschool ukulele program, will then lead us on November 2nd and 17th.

Dinner
The annual lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) Families Dinner will be held Thursday, November 2nd from 6-8pm at Meany Middle School. Members of the school board will be there to welcome LGBT families and their friends. All SPS students, families and staff are welcome to attend! - The November meeting is where we add new FOSB Directors. Being a Director is easy, fun, and a great way to connect with the school. We ask that you try to make as many meetings as possible and volunteer on committees/ other events when time permits. Take a moment and think about what makes Salmon Bay special. A lot of those special things depend on a vibrant and involved community. Consider joining FOSB and helping create and continue those events and traditions.
- Do you have ideas about after school programs? We're looking for someone to join our after school programming team. If you're interested in learning about building the brochure and booking classes for our after school programs please email Monica.
- We've had some questions about offering childcare for FOSB meetings. Starting in November, we'll open a signup 2 weeks prior to the meeting. If enough people sign up (minimum of 5 children) a week before the meeting, we will schedule Coho to provide childcare at that meeting.

We have been hard at work with our local vendor to offer some new items and some customizable items for Salmon Bay families and friends to order. In addition to a new shirt design we are now able to order travel/picnic blankets with the Salmon Bay logo. These would be perfect for taking along to the beach or for keeping your backside warm while sitting on cold bleachers cheering for your student's amazing athletic team. Go Panthers! Ballard High School Fall Concert Series
Orchestra Concert, Thursday, November 2; 7:30
Brittany Newell, Director of Orchestras, will lead the Chamber Orchestra in a lesser known work by Anton
Arensky, Variations on a Theme by Tchaikovsky. Arensky was a big name on the Russian music scene during
much of the heyday of Rimsky-Korsakov and Tchaikovsky, but he is not much remembered today. The second piece will be the widely known and loved Holberg Suite by Edvard Grieg. Symphonic Orchestra will be joined by a few members of Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Band to play oboe, bassoon and horn parts in Mozart's Symphony 25 . This music has a theatrical opening with music that is tense and marked by fierce syncopations, silences, and a powerful bass line. This orchestra will also play Danse Macabre , by Saint-Saëns, evoking rattling bones, devilish playfulness and a spooky scene. The solo violin represents the devil fiddling for a dance.
Band Concert Wednesday, November 8
Highlights of the Band concert will include Wind Ensemble performing Gustav Holst's First Suite in E-flat , one of the major cornerstones of the wind band repertoire, and Jazz Band I performing the classics Basie Straight Ahead and A Night in Tunisia .
Director Michael James finds his expanding program includes 175 band students this year. The concert will showcase Symphonic Band, the audition-level Wind Ensemble, and Jazz Bands I and II.

The Northwest Boychoir
The Northwest Boychoir is holding auditions for boys who love to sing on Saturday, November 4 or at a time convenient for you.
Classes for new members begin in January 2018. Boys who are currently in 1st - 4th grade are invited to sign up to audition and no previous music training is needed. The Northwest Boychoir offers the perfect blend music training and Serious Fun! For more than 40 years, the Northwest Boychoir has trained young singers to be fully skilled musicians and perform in professional settings with confidence.
Auditions and rehearsals take place at the University Heights Center in Seattle. The Northwest Boychoir is proud to be an inclusive and equitable organization and is firmly committed to assisting families with financial aid.

3rd Annual Seattle Public Safety Meeting

The purpose of the survey is to solicit feedback on public safety and security concerns from those who live and/or work in Seattle. A report on the survey results will be provided to the Seattle Police Department to assist them with making your neighborhood safer and more secure.
The survey is available now through November 30th and is available in Amharic, Arabic, Chinese, English, Korean, Oromo, Somali, Spanish, Tagalog, Tigrinya and Vietnamese.

Youth Ultimate Clinic
Seattle Cascades is offering a Youth Ultimate Clinic October 29th. Seattle Cascades is Seattle's pro ultimate men's team. They combine forces with the elite women's teams to coach clinics. STEM for Middle School Girls
GEMS is a free, volunteer-run after-school science enrichment program for Seattle 7th to 8th grade girls to explore STEM fields as diverse as forensics, oceanography and neuroscience through hands-on activities, field trips and mentorship from women in science. GEM meetings run once a month from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm over November to May and are offered at two locations: the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in downtown Seattle and South Shore School in South Seattle. Ballard Girls Basketball - Now Playing...
Registration is now open for the Ballard Girls Basketball Fall Clinics on Friday, Nov 10 from 9am-3pm! Girls 3rd through 6th grade (beginner to advanced), this clinic is a fun way to improve your ball handling, shooting, passing and defense. Lots of games and inspiration provided!
Registration is also now open for Ballard Girls Basketball Open Gyms on Wednesdays from 10/11 through 11/29. 6-7:30pm at Whitman Middle School for girls 3rd through 5th grade (beginner to advanced). These open gyms will be run by our coaching staff who will set up teams, call fouls, make substitutions and give brief coaching tips. Space is limited. Register here.
