Among Us
In the past couple weeks, we've kicked off a number of middle school clubs including what has to be the current most popular lunch hangout, Among Us, lead by Middle School Science Teacher, Monica Beckman, and a group of student hosts (shout out to Daniela M-F, Guthrie M, Hazel M., Jackson S, Kostya D, Lila T, and Sam D-A!)

Over 67 students have signed up for Among Us during the first two weeks! During the game, which students play in smaller groups, there was a lot of talking and excited discussions, probably the most teachers have heard since the first week of school. "I think so and so is the imposter! You know, you can still complete tasks as a ghost! Who is turquoise, I saw them standing over the body! Ahh, we've been sabotaged!"

Students building connection and having fun is exactly what we had in mind when the middle school club concept was first imagined. In the next couple weeks, we will be adding several new clubs to the middle school calendar. Students can learn about the clubs from their homeroom teachers and we'll also share updates in the newsletter.

Halloween Celebrations

Our remote classrooms were filled with Halloween spirit today! Students, as well as staff members, got in on the fun, wearing costumes, listening to Halloween stories and celebrating all things pumpkin.

Library News

Plans are underway for our Fall Book Fair. Mark your calendar and plan to join us!

We will once again be partnering with Secret Garden Books. Participants can shop online or in person at the store.

An online shopping link/code will be shared prior to the start of the book fair. Use this link to support the Salmon Bay School library while shopping online.

Elementary & Middle School Photos Needed
Wanted: Halloween photos for the yearbook(s)!
We've already started creating yearbooks for the 2020-21 school year at Salmon Bay! Even though we can't be together for our usual Halloween celebrations at school, we know many of you are still decorating and dressing up in costumes. Please take a photo of celebration and send it to us for the yearbook!

To make yearbook photo submissions easy, we've created a Teams folder and email address.

K-5 Photographs can be emailed here: [email protected]

Middle School Photographs can be emailed here: [email protected]
  • Please keep your images school appropriate. Not too scary or gory.
  • Provide student name(s) and homeroom teacher of any students in the photo.
  • Make sure that your photograph(s) are clear and are well-lighted.
  • Limit of three photos per family.
  • By sending your photos, you agree to have them published in the yearbook.
  • Submit Halloween photos by November 13th!

Thanks so much,

Counselor's Corner

Hello Salmon Bay families,

We hope that you are doing well, enjoying the Fall colors, and are ready for The Great Pumpkin (if that's your thing).  Getting outside every day is great for our children's mental health. As is connecting with their friends. Hopefully, they have ways to do that on a semi-regular basis, whether that's through a Zoom chat, a phone call, text thread, or a yard visit. I know that I highly value the times I can check in with a friend in person (socially distant, of course!) or engage in my very entertaining text thread with my high school friends. Connecting with those we love is especially important these days. We hope you and your family can do that. Remember: You are not alone. You have this amazing Salmon Bay community.

Also, as I'm talking about connection, please remember, if you have a 6th grader, remind them to email me, Rob, at [email protected] for the Teams link for the 6th grade Connection Club that meets every Wednesday at 11:15-11:45 am. This week there will be a Halloween celebration with Librarian Ben joining in to read a spooky book. Please encourage your 6th grader to check it out!

From Admin

Good Afternoon Salmon Bay Families,

With all the recent work on our heating and ventilation system, I took a few moments today to go down into the bowels of the Salmon Bay building. People who know that space have always said it would be the perfect place for a scary movie or haunted house. From the towering old boilers to the large hissing pipes and whirring fans to the nuclear fallout shelter signs.

Whatever weekend plans await you - be they in costume or not, I hope you are able to soak up some sunshine and enjoy the fall leaves and family. Maybe next year we'll be able to offer the basement tour for everyone in person - here's hoping we get to that place soon. No tricks, all treats.

Volunteer Needs

Your Help Is Needed
We are working with teachers, administration and district staff to implement a volunteer program during remote school. Although volunteering might look a little different right now, we still need parent support to offer many activities, events and support to our students/ families.

Please email Jodi Russell, Volunteer Coordinator, if you can help meet these current needs:

Elementary Classroom Support - A number of volunteer opportunities are available supporting elementary teachers and students. Needs vary depending on grade level and classroom, but here are a few we wanted to highlight:
  • Virtual Field Trip Coordinator
  • Tech Support for Other Class Families(Kindergarten)
  • Assist with Preparation of Student Materials (K, 2nd, 3rd, 5th)
  • Book Group Support or Leadership (2nd, 5th)
  • Small group/ break out room support (2nd)
Virtual Book Fair Support - Help organize supporting materials (like book recommendations) for the book fair. Work on your computer, at home, flexible timing.

Middle School Club Leader(s) - Support middle school students participating in virtual clubs. students have expressed specific desire to have the following CLUBs: Gaming, Super Smash Bros, Speedrunning, Videography. It seems that the "gaming" minded ones could be potentially combined in some way. Also, we have a parent who is seeking a partner to co-lead Chess. Must be available during club meetings (one day / week from 12:15 - 1:15 pm).

Sign Maker - We just announced the new name of our school alley, Panther Passage! We'd love to have a weatherproof sign that can remain outside in the alley this winter.

FOSB DirectorsFOSB works because of parents like you stepping forward and volunteering. We need new Directors every year to help oversee and guide the organization into the future.  Please consider joining FOSB as a Director, we need your voice. More info can be found here.
