It was exciting to see so many students and families. We look forward to seeing middle school students at our distribution event next week!

Salmon Bay Tent Set Up
This is how we set up the big tent, Salmon Bay style. It's not often that you see us carry a large tent down the street but unusual times call for creative solutions!

Middle School News
This week, we wanted to highlight our Middle School WEB Program. WEB leaders have been working hard throughout the summer to prepare for the start of school. A special thanks to MJ, Marley, Mackenzi, Hazel and Corrine, 8th grade WEB leaders, who prepared the following information for this newsletter.

What is WEB?
WEB, which stands for Where Everyone Belongs, is a program that helps incoming 6th grade students transition from elementary school into middle school with support, guidance, and help from peer mentors. The goal of WEB is to create a safe learning environment and foster connections throughout the school. In the WEB program, 8th grade students volunteer to work with 6th graders to help them feel comfortable and welcome in the Salmon Bay community. In addition to supporting 6th grade students, WEB Leaders provide student help and leadership with other tasks around Salmon Bay.

How is WEB structured at Salmon Bay?
The 8th grade WEB leaders have been meeting once a week all summer in preparation for the virtual 6th grade orientation, which took place on Friday, September 4th. Though technology posed some challenges, the orientations, for the most part, went well. Each team of WEB leaders has been paired with a small group of sixth grade students for the year. WEB leaders plan to meet with their 6th grade groups again next week; monthly WEB connections will occur throughout the year. WEB meetings will be held more frequently (at least twice a month) at the beginning and end of the school year and will continue regardless of virtual or in-person learning.

What is the benefit of the WEB program for students?
One reason to become a WEB Leader is to make connections with the 6th graders and give them a helping hand. When I was in 6th grade, we didn't have a WEB program (WEB started last year at Salmon Bay). This program introduces 6th graders to experienced students, provides a space for asking questions and lets them know that we will be here to give them extra support.

WEB has some really good benefits, not only for 6th graders, but for 8th graders too. Supporting the 6th graders at the beginning of their middle school journey, gives WEB leaders an opportunity to improve leadership skills and learn presentation skills. WEB encourages you to step out of your comfort zone and give back to your community. In short, this program is beneficial to the people leading as well as those they mentor.

From the Library

Dear Salmon Bay Families,

I'm pleased to let you all know that we will have curbside library service during remote learning!  This will be a regularly occurring, outdoor mini-library and/or a system involving placing orders online and picking them up on a flexible schedule.  Many details are still being worked out due to covid-related constraints.  More information will be coming ASAP.

Also, it would be wonderful if people would please return any outstanding library books.  You can return books to school during school hours.  You can also leave books on my front porch at 943 NW Market St (please only come during daylight hours). On September 21 I will finalize an inventory of the fiction and picture books.  Any outstanding books will be automatically marked "lost" and a fine will automatically appear on your account.  You can bring me the books any time after that date, and I believe I can delete the fine at that time.  My goal is just to get an accurate account of library resources, not to charge people money.

I look forward to giving you books, however we can make it happen!

Counselor's Corner
Hello Salmon Bay Families,

For those of you who are new to our school, welcome!  We look forward to meeting and getting to know you. As we work on building community, here is some background information on your two school counselors.  Together, we are going to survive, and hopefully thrive, this year.

Rob Bright (he/him), Middle School Counselor: Personally, I have found it challenging to be upbeat, but every day I give it my best shot. Here's a little bit about me: I grew up in Morgantown, West Virginia, where I started running when I was ten, and found a passion for making people laugh. I studied acting at Ohio University and right after graduation, I moved to Seattle to get closer to the grunge music, hang out with other young adults and have some fun in the theatre.  I have never regretted that decision. I love the PNW and especially Ballard. I live close to the school with my wife, Molly, and our two boys Ben and Lucas (12 and 14 respectively).  These days, I'm all about helping adolescents navigate our confusing and complex world in a balanced and heathy way.

Jenny Brooks (she/her), Elementary School Counselor:  I grew up in Spokane and found a love of playing sports, participating in student government, and studying Spanish.  I attended Washington State University and graduated with a degree in Elementary Education with a focus in Spanish and Bilingual Education.  Before starting my teaching career, I recruited new college students for WSU and was in charge of visiting 65 high schools on an ongoing rotation- every school between Ballard and Blaine. I learned to navigate western Washington through my Thomas Guide.  I decided to stay in Seattle and taught middle school ELL (English as a Learned Language) in S Everett for six years before pursuing my M.Ed in School Counseling and graduating in 2008.  I am starting my sixth year at Salmon Bay after working in Bellevue for seven years.  I have two elementary aged daughters and am married to someone I attended high school with (but didn't date back then).  I strongly value community, supporting one other, and listening.  I am currently surviving on ice cream and coffee.

We are here to help teach your children about emotional coping strategies, selfcare, personal study habits and future options. Also, we are here to support your family through all the interesting drama that is middle school amazing adventure that is elementary. Please don't hesitate to reach out to us.

In community,

Rob and Jenny

From Admin

Hello Salmon Bay Families,

It was a Strong Start to the 2020/21 school year indeed!. We are thankful that this atypical start is now under our collective belt. We are excited to move forward with increased optimism and decreased uncertainty. We are so very proud of our Salmon Bay families and staff who banded together to make this as smooth as possible for our students.

Hopefully, everyone has a keen (or relative) sense of the Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday schedule and structure.  There have been many questions regarding the Wednesday schedule which continues to be an early release day. We are still finalizing the details but would like to share what we know to date. In K-5, students will meet as a class for Social Emotional Learning (SEL), have English Language Arts (ELA), and then work independently with a menu of teacher-provided activities to guide them. In 6-8, students will meet in their homerooms for SEL and then independently navigate various teacher-provided activities. Across the grades, teachers will designate small groupings and provide additional support/instruction for those who need it.

For middle school only, we will have yet another materials distribution event on Wednesday (9/16) from 4-6pm. At this event, students will pick up Math books (if they haven't already done so), a copy of the book "Stamped" which will be needed for Humanities (ELA, Social Studies), reading packet (6th grade only), and laptops (if they haven't already done so).

By now, K-8 teachers have either emailed or posted meeting invitations for next week. K-6 invitations can be accessed on Student Outlook or Teams Calendars. 7th and 8th grade invitations can be accessed on Schoology under "materials". If you have any questions, please contact your student's homeroom teacher. Individual student schedules have been sent. Please email Britta Bowman if you have any questions.

Whew, that feels like enough for one communication and school week. Thanks for all that you're doing these days. Your partnership is highly valued!

Best,

Darren, Neil and Suro

Office Notes

Office Hours
The school office will be staffed during the week from 8 am - 4 pm. Please note, however, that the school building remains closed to all students and families. If you need to pick up or drop off any items, please contact the office to schedule a time.

Attendance
If your student will be absent from school for any reason (illness, travel plans) please contact our office at 206-252-1728 or email  [email protected]
Knowing there is a reason for your student's absence helps streamline attendance and communication.

School Directories

This year we are producing two different directories to help families communicate and connect with one another.

Grade Level Directory
Families will receive a link via email to complete a grade level directory form. In addition to basic contact information, this grade level directory allows families to share information about where they live and specific student interests. Participation is optional and families can select which information they would like to share with families across their grade band.
  • Elementary families (grades 1-5) will receive this link in their classroom correspondence from teachers.
  • Middle School families will receive a link via email on Monday.

All School Directory
We will once again be offering families a chance to participate in our traditional all school directory this year. When families complete the grade level directory form, they will have a chance to opt into the all school directory.

If you have questions about these directory plans or need to make edits to your information, please contact Jodi Russell, Volunteer Coordinator.

FOSB News

FOSB is our school parent teacher organization.

Thank you to everyone who attended our first meeting of the year last night. We hope you had a chance to make a few connections and that our overview of FOSB committees was helpful. Just a reminder that you can find committee descriptions and contact information on our website, linked here.

We are going to share a series of weekly FOSB Facts in our newsletter to help you learn more about our parent/ teacher organization and the many ways we support our school community. This week, our FOSB fact is all about membership.

FOSB Fact: Membership
Did you know that you are already a member of FOSB?
When you join our community as a parent or guardian, become a FOSB member. There's no application, no dues, and you have an opportunity to share your voice on every issue that we discuss. You can vote at our meetings and ask to have items placed on the agenda. It's easy to think of FOSB as just a small group of people who attend a monthly meeting, but FOSB is actually all of us.

Interested in Becoming a FOSB Director?
We elect FOSB Directors twice during the school year (in the fall and at our May membership meeting). With our fall election coming up, this is the perfect time to become a director. You can learn more about the Director role here. If you are interested or have questions, please reach out to our Volunteer Coordinator or our FOSB co-chairs

Special Education and Disability Committee
It's official! At our September 10th meeting, we formally approved our newest committee, the
