Welcome Kindergarten Students
This week we welcomed our kindergarten students to their first full week of school. Students had an opportunity to visit our office staff and meet many of the caring adults that will support them this year. We'd like to extend an invitation to our newest families (and ALL families) to reach out if you have any questions or if we can assist your family as you transition into the new school year.

Playground Fun
There were lots of smiles on the playground this week including those from staff members who seized the chance to join in the fun (this is our new librarian, Ben)! Notice his bright, new safety vest. All of our playground monitors wear these vests to make themselves easily identifiable to students or adults who might need assistance.

Counselor's Corner: Transitions

First off: We would like to give a big shout out to those of you who helped with donating school supplies. Thank you for your help!

Ah, homework. Tis the season. "Let's hope this year we don't have the same battles we had last year." If this is your hope for this year then you are not alone as a parent. Parents all over the land are learning new ways to weather this storm. The following information is what we have found useful to help parents help their students.  First off, what is a reasonable expectation for students and their homework every night? A general rule of thumb is that students should be doing 10 minutes of homework for each grade level per night. So, 2nd grade: 20 minutes, 3rd grade: 30 minutes, 6th grade: 60 minutes and so on.  Parents can help children succeed with homework by providing clear messages about the importance of homework and the following support strategies:

  • Have children do their work at a communal table. Stay nearby, to alleviate the loneliness that some kids feel and to prevent procrastination.
  • Ask your child to unload her backpack and talk through assignments.
  • Help your child make a "Done/To Do" list.
  • Ask your child to put the assignments in the order he'd like to do them. Encourage him to explain his thinking-fostering a sense of control.
  • Use a timer. Challenge your child to estimate how long an assignment will take and ask if she wants to set the timer for that full amount of time, or less.
  • Your role: To monitor, organize, motivate, and praise the homework effort as each piece is done.
For more information please click here.

If you have questions or need more support, please don't hesitate to reach out to us.

Warmly, Jenny Brooks (K-5) and Rob Bright (6-8)

Youth T-shirts Wanted
Students often wear t-shirts as smocks in art class to protect their clothing. We have a bunch of adult size t-shirts but they don't fit our smallest students very well.  Trevor, our art teacher, is asking for donations of used t-shirts that your older students may have outgrown. Feel free to drop off t-shirt donations in the art room or the Volunteer Coordinator's office.

Library Help Needed
We'd love to have a team of parents assist with shelving books in the library. Interested? Email Ben, Salmon Bay Librarian.

Drop-off and Pick-up Procedures

Morning Supervision
We ask that students enter our campus starting at 8:30 am and move to one of three supervised areas until the bell rings: playground/upper field, cafeteria or library. If you need to enter the building before 8:30 am, please have your student remain with you.  If you have questions, please speak with Caitlin Racey in the main office.

Drop Off and Pick Up Locations
For student and family safety, do not drop off or pick up students on NW 65th Street or next to the bus zone on 19th Avenue.

Please drop off and pick up in the loading zone on the east side of the building (18th
Avenue). We ask that drivers do not drive north on 18th Avenue. Limiting the street to southbound traffic helps our crossing guard manage congestion and ensures all students are leaving and entering cars from the curb side of the street. Do not park in the loading zone or idle while waiting for your student. If you must enter the building for any reason, you must park elsewhere.

Parking
Seattle Municipal Code prohibits parking a vehicle within five feet of a driveway or alley. Help us be a good neighbor by respecting driveways, bus zones, and other no parking areas around our school.

From Admin

Hello Salmon Bay Families,

This week, the hallways and classrooms were abuzz with positive energy and appreciation for the coming together in common purpose. Especially in the first weeks of school, our charge is to understand the students we serve by name, strength and need. We want all students to gain a sense of safety and belonging, to develop competence in their skills that leads to confidence in themselves, and to build trust in the others that are in this caring community.

The theme of this week was CONNECTION. In K-5, students connected with their new cohort for the year, with their new teacher, and with the content and curriculum that will define their experience. In 6th grade, students connected with each other as they embarked on their middle school years together. With this group, bonds are currently being made and after Camp Orkila in two weeks, cohesion will be achieved. Both the Cascade and Olympic teams had their Fall Connection days this week. You will find specifics of this extremely positive experience in the Middle School Program Spotlight below.

We have two events next week to bring to your attention. Curriculum Night is next Thursday, September 19th. Please peruse the information below for details. We look forward to sharing more about the proposed marvels of the school year when we gather. On Friday, September 20th, there is a Global Climate Strike and Salmon Bay student leaders are developing a plan to participate. This effort coincides with United Nations climate talks and is an opportunity for youth to fight for their right to a healthy future. Most likely, there will be an on-campus march for K-8, and we assume that some middle school students will go to Cal Anderson Park for the big rally and then march to Town Hall as a collective. Once we know more, so shall you.

We are honored to support your children as they continue to grow and learn.

In partnership,

Darren, Neil and Annie

Middle School Program Spotlight
Fall Connection Days
In our first two weeks of school, our middle school students have been busy! Students in 7th and 8th grade had the opportunity to participate in a fall Connection Experience this week which included a field trip to the Odyssey Challenge Course at Cottage Lake Park and a day of team building at Salmon Bay.

At Cottage Lake, each 7th & 8th grade team had the opportunity to participate in team building initiatives, a high ropes course and small group activities including sports, fishing and art. Throughout the day students had the opportunity to work as a team, learn about one another, create new bonds and challenge themselves.

While at Salmon Bay, students participated in a day of activities center around our student selected acronym for this year, LEADER. The LEADER rotation at Salmon Bay included a student-led Socratic Seminar about the values of LEADER, a small group activity where students defined and identified people who represent the values of LEADER and a poster making session where students used their talents to create LEADER posters for our school. We ended the day with all students writing 6 word memoirs and began the process of making LEADER key chains.

W.E.B. Mentorship Program
We are excited to announce that Salmon Bay has started a peer mentorship program this year! Last spring, 30 current 8th grade students were selected to be trained as peer leaders as part of W.E.B. (Where Everyone Belongs). W.E.B. is a middle school orientation and transition program that welcomes 6th graders and helps them feel comfortable throughout their first year of middle school. W.E.B. leaders completed a training this summer and hosted a 6th grade orientation last week on Tuesday, September 3rd..Built on the belief that students can help one another succeed, W.E.B. leaders (8th graders) will work with a group of 6th grade students during the school year and will run monthly social and academic check-ins with their group. We'd like to give a shout out to Sam Olson for serving as our W.E.B. Leader and supporting our new 8th grade mentors as they launch this program.
