Kindergarten Read Aloud
Pigeon made a visit to Kindergaten read aloud this week. A few students were brave and asked the Pigeon a big, tricky question to stump him! A good reminder that no one knows everything and we're all learning new things!

Middle Name Poems with Teacher Ben
Ben, our school librarian, is visiting with students in grades 2 through 5 to discuss this fun poem format. During this lesson, students use Middle Name poems as an opportunity to reflect on who the self is that they bring to class, and to see what selves everyone else is bringing to the beginning of the school year.

Counselor's Corner
Hello Salmon Bay Friends!

Wow! Our reality just keeps getting more interesting by the week. I hope that you and your family are doing well despite this crazy unhealthy air quality. It seems to be changing for the better, as I write this.

As we are all settling into this school year of remote learning (for now), I wanted to bring up something that a friend of mine said recently. "We (everyone all over this world) are all getting a Master's level class on Powerlessness right now."  That resonated with me because I don't have any control of when this pandemic clears up and that is difficult.  I have had to use every tool in my self-care toolbox that I have recently. Firstly, I start with acceptance because if I don't then I will just be angry about the situation and I won't be able to find solutions. Next, I go to deep breathing or meditation, making a gratitude list and then lean on exercise to change my thoughts. These are some of the tools I've been collecting for years. It takes some time to find out what works for us individually and for our children. I love talking to students about how to make positive, healthy decisions to help live a happy, balanced life.

Please know that you are not alone. If you need support please reach out to Jenny Brooks (elementary counselor) or me, Rob (middle school counselor).

Here's to wellness!

From Admin

Good Evening Salmon Bay Community!

This week has been a huge lift - for families, for teachers, for students and for kids!  We have worked to lift our whole-class meetings for the full week off the ground, to continue to solve tech and connectivity issues, and to get to know the character of our classes and individual students.  Helen Keller wrote, "Alone we can do so little.  Together we can do so much."   We  are super grateful for the team that is helping and supporting and being patient as we continue to lift the student experience, the academic supports, the small group work, and the community celebrations.  We are planning for our first Friday Sing next week, Curbside Library Distribution starting in October, Outdoor Material Distribution  and Book Returns in the back alley, Curriculum Night and more.

Let's keep lifting together and soon we will be soaring!  We can't wait to someday get back to in-person instruction, but are working now to make the best of this situation, learn new tools, stay healthy and do our best to stay connected.

FOSB News

FOSB is our school parent teacher organization. All parents and guardians are automatically members of FOSB.

We are going to share a series of weekly FOSB Facts in our newsletter to help you learn more about our parent/ teacher organization. This week, our FOSB fact is about shopping!

FOSB Fact: Shop For FOSB
Did you know that you can support FOSB by making everyday purchases? Affinity and e-commerce programs are a simple way for families to support our school when they shop at their merchant of choice. And it really adds up - FOSB receives approximately $6,500 per year from this type of passive fundraising!

Here are just a few examples:
  • Ballard Market Receipts : Ballard Market is committed to giving back to their communities. FOSB receives a donation of 1% of pre-tax subtotals from all receipts we send in to them. So remember to save your Ballard Market receipts and drop them off at school when you come to pickup materials.
  • Amazon SmileDid you know that Amazon donates 0.5% of the price of your eligible purchases to the charitable organization of your choice when you shop at smile.amazon.com? Amazon Smile is the same Amazon you know, with the added benefit of supporting charitable organizations. Just go to smile.amazon.com and search for Friends of Salmon Bay.
  • Office Max: Office Max will donate 5% of proceeds to our school if you tell them our school ID number, 70107368, when you make a purchase.
Check to see if you favorite stores offer programs that could benefit Salmon Bay!

Interested in Becoming a FOSB Director?
We elect FOSB Directors twice during the school year (in the fall and at our May membership meeting). With our fall election coming up, this is the perfect time to become a director. You can learn more about the Director role here. If you are interested or have questions, please reach out to our Volunteer Coordinator or our FOSB co-chairs

PIE: Parent Information Exchange Meeting
