Counselor's Corner: Transitions

What is a school counselor?

School counselors are educators who hold a minimum of a master's degree, typically in Education with a specialization in School Counseling.  The role of a school counselor is to help all students in the areas of academic achievement, social/emotional development, and in planning for the future.  This work can at the system level, within classrooms, working with small groups, or with individual students.

At Salmon Bay, we have two school counselors:
Jenny Brooks ([email protected]):
3 days a week, elementary
Rob Bright ([email protected]):
full-time, middle school

We are lucky to have a few students joining us this year who are learning to be school counselors.  Matt Howe is doing his school counseling internship this year and we also plan to have a student completing their practicum work with us this winter and spring.  These students will be running some small groups, working with individual students, as well teaching lessons in classrooms.

We also have a mental health therapist on Mondays through Sound Mental Health.  She sees students who primarily have Apple Health Insurance, although Sound can discuss other insurance plans as well.  If you are interested in this option, please let your child's school counselor know.

Volunteer Needs & Donations

Roots of Empathy Family Needed!
Did you have a baby this summer or know of someone who did?  We are looking for another family to participate in our Roots of Empathy program, which we do with our 5th graders each year.  Interested or want more info?
Email  Jenny Brooks

Snack Donations Requested
A few of our classrooms and support programs could use donations of snacks for students.
Any snacks in bulk large containers would be greatly appreciated.

Suggested items include:
Goldfish crackers
Graham crackers
Teddy grahams/bunny grahams (or any 'little' snacks like such)
Pretzels
Granola bars
Apple sauce cups

Please drop off donations in the Volunteer Coordinator's office. Thank you.

Youth T-shirts Wanted
Students often wear t-shirts as smocks in art class to protect their clothing. We have a bunch of adult size t-shirts but they don't fit our smallest students very well.  Trevor, our art teacher, is asking for donations of used t-shirts that your older students may have outgrown. Feel free to drop off t-shirt donations in the art room or the Volunteer Coordinator's office.

From Admin

Thank you to all the families and students who participated in our Walk for a Healthy Planet today at Salmon Bay; and a shout-out to all the students from our school and around the city who participated in the Global Climate Strike advocating for legislative and community action.

Already many of our students and families are taking action and leading in their field.   For example, Caroline Heege, a Salmon Bay Middle school student, is one of the Seattle youth leaders for the Global Climate Strike.  She has been featured this week in Newsweek, Cross-Cut and Seattle Child:  https://crosscut.com/2019/09/we-should-be-able-have-normal-childhood-seattles-young-climate-activists-why-they-strike

Next week, we are inviting all students and community members to think about their "Steps for a Healthy Planet" and contribute to our lobby display reflecting each individual's commitments.

One of the small shifts we've added this week is to compost on the playground during MS lunch.  Thanks for your partnership in making our school a strong and sustainable community!

Elementary News
Elementary Enrichment & Camp Fees
Families should have received an email today regarding payment of elementary and enrichment fee.

What is an enrichment fee?  During the school year, your child will participate in field trips, artist-in-residence programs, or other special class projects.  Instead of asking for payment each time one of these activities takes place, we ask parents to pay one fee in the beginning of the school year. This fee is called the Enrichment Fee (or field trip fee).  Our elementary enrichment fee is $100 per student.

Payment Options?   We have a new payment system (SchoolPay) that allows you to easily make and track payments throughout the year. You can reach the new payment portal by logging in to your student's SPS Source account. Click here  for instructions on how to access your student's Source account and the SchoolPay system. You may also pay this fee by dropping off a check (payable to Salmon Bay School) in the volunteer coordinator's office. We ask that all enrichment fees be paid by December 1st.  Scholarship funds are available.

What About Camp Fees?
In the spring, each of our elementary classes will also participate in a camp experience. Fees related to that camp experience will be collected in the spring. If you would like to pay the camp fee (which varies by grade) in advance, you are welcome to do so.  Camp fee reminders will be sent to families approximately 2-3 months before their class camp experience. Camp fees have been loaded into your student's SchoolPay account for easy payment and tracking.

2019 - 2020 Camp Fees:
$25 Kindergarten fee:    Extended day at Camp Long
$100 First Grade:           One night at Camp Indianola
$100 Second Grade:      One night at Camp Indianola
$200 Third Grade:          Two nights at Camp Colman
$225 Fourth Grade:        Two nights at Camp Seymour                                          and Adventuress Sailing
$300 Fifth Grade:            Three nights at Camp
                                        Island wood
Scholarships?  No students miss out on opportunities to attend field trips or camp due to financial circumstances.  If you would like to request a scholarship, please contact Jodi Russell, Volunteer Coordinator or Annie Parker, Assistant Principal.  Contributions to the scholarship fund are always welcome.  You may add a scholarship donation to your check or add a donation to your online SchoolPay shopping cart.
