First Friday Sing
We held our first Friday Sing of the school year this morning! Thank you to all staff who helped lead songs and to all families who were able to attend. It felt good to gather (virtually) with all of you!
Assistant Principal, Darren, leading Rattlin' Bog this morning.

Staff Introduction
Welcome to Caroline Bargo!
Hi everyone, my name is Caroline Bargo and I am teaching one of the fourth grade classes this fall. I moved to Washington two years ago to work at IslandWood on Bainbridge Island and to attend UW, where I received my Masters in Teaching this year. My focus was on how to engage multiple ways of knowing and being in science classrooms in public schools. When I'm not teaching, I love spending time outside, with my dog, and cooking with friends. I am excited about fourth grade and about working with the community of Salmon Bay!
Middle School News

Gender and Sexuality Alliance
Hi Salmon Bay middle school students!  It's Drew, your 6th grade math teacher at Salmon Bay.  Next week I will be hosting the first meeting for the middle school's Gender and Sexuality Alliance, abbreviated as GSA.  "What is the Gender and Sexuality Alliance?" you might be wondering.  The GSA is a support group for students.  All middle school students are welcome to come, but the group will be of particular interest for students who are lesbian, bisexual, gay, transgender, non-binary, genderfluid, or any other gender or sexuality.  Straight and cisgender allies are also very welcome to come!  At these meetings, you will be learning about and discussing issues related to gender and sexuality.  Have something you want to learn about or talk about?  Come to the meeting and let me know, and I'll make sure to make time to explore and discuss that topic at one of our meetings.  You will also have a chance to socialize informally with other GSA students, so this could be a great way to make some new friends!

The first meeting will be on Tuesday, September 29 from 12:30-1:00.  This is during your lunchtime, so don't worry, you won't miss any classes.  I will be hosting these meetings every Tuesday from 12:30-1:00.  There is no formal membership or commitment to come to all meetings, so even if you are just curious what the group is like, please come!  And if you miss the first few meetings, you are always welcome to join us anytime in the school year.

Any students who are interested should email me, and I will send you a calendar invite.  That way, you'll see the meeting on your calendar every week.  My email is [email protected] .  You can also search for "McDonald, Andrew L." and my email will come up.  You can also ask any teacher to help you contact me if you are interested.

I'm really excited to see the 7th and 8th graders who attended our meetings last year, and I'm also really excited to see new 6th graders join our meetings.  See you Tuesday at 12:30!

You'll find registration and more information at:  https://www.friendsofsalmonbay.org/after-school-theatre/. Library News
Dear Salmon Bay Families,

I am pleased to announce we will have outdoor library services and curbside pickup starting on October 1!

We will have a mini-library on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of every month, rain or shine. (We have a big tent.)  Also, you can place online holds, and I'll get them ready for you to pick up.  I strongly recommend viewing these instructions before trying to place an online hold from our library.

Please view  this link for all the details about material library services from Salmon Bay.

Kindergarten families, I am pleased to announce we will be kicking off our Book-a-Day program on October 1!  Prior to the emergence of covid-19, kindergarten students would bring home a different book to read with their families every day during fall.  This year, we are putting all the books online for your daily, family reading time.
Each book will be available as pdf slideshow that you can read together, stopping to discuss at your own pace.  Each book will also (barring episodes of technical difficulties) be featured as a video read-aloud by staff or administration from Salmon Bay.  This way, kindergartners and new Salmon Bay families can get familiar with our community of educators.
Stayed tuned for more details on Book-a-Day, coming soon!

Take care,
Teacher Ben

Filling our Tanks

Everyone has an invisible tank.  When our tank is full, we can better handle stressors that come our way as well as regulate our emotions.

Here are things that fill our tanks:
  • Adequate and restful sleep
  • Eating nutritious food
  • Exercise and movement
  • Fresh air and sunlight
  • Positive relationships
  • Mental health support
  • Time to think, plan, and dream
  • Physical touch and human connection
  • Predictable schedule
  • Having purpose and passion
       (to name a few)

If your life or that of your child(ren) is feeling out of control, think about that person's tank.  Is it full?  Is it empty? Running on fumes?  If the tank isn't full, what changes can you make to help fill the tank?
Look over the above list and make a plan to add a little to the tank each day, focusing on what you can control.

As always, we are here to support you and your children.  Please reach out.

From Admin

Good Evening Salmon Bay Community!

As we round up another successful week of learning and growing for all of us at Salmon Bay, from your administration team, to all school staff, and students, I can't help but think of how far we have come in such a short amount of time.

Even though it's only been two weeks, we have gotten a great rhythm going. I am amazed by the magnitude of hard work and dedication that teachers, students, and families are putting in daily to make this new normal as successful as possible. It has been invigorating going into virtual classrooms and seeing all the wonderful learning going on. As we know, the struggle is real for making connections in a remote setting, but I am always encouraged when I see the level of engagement from students and the amount of work they are putting forth. I'm in awe!

With that said, as we say farewell to summer and enter fall, I wanted to take a minute to remind everyone the importance of self-care. Please take time, however small, that you have for yourself, your families, and friends. Self-care is essential to avoid burn out and allows you to come back refreshed and ready to learn with a renewed sense of purpose. Remote learning is demanding in ways we are not used to. As we know self- care is different for everyone, so please if you have a break maybe step away from your computers, or set some boundaries for yourself and others, or if you are like me and have email on every device maybe turn off your notifications for the weekends. The possibilities are endless, but self-care is vital for staying healthy.

If nothing else, please just breath, and know you are not alone. As the old Persian adage goes, "This too shall pass" and whether we become experts at remote learning or get back to in person instruction, just know that we stand strong when we stand together through these arduous times. Be kind, keep smiling, and take care of one another.
