Thank you, Veraci pizza!
And thank you to everyone who came out for our Pizza on the Playground event this evening. Our celebratory community spirit held the rain off for a couple hours so parents could chat and kids could play. What a great way to complete our first month of school!   A special thank you to everyone who helped set-up, clean up and support this event.

From Admin

Hello Salmon Bay Families,

This week was a great illustration of our mission in action!

4th graders boarded the 106 year old "Adventuress", a 133 foot gaff-rigged schooner, to work and play on the Puget Sound. They learned such concepts as marine ecosystems, sustainability, teamwork and responsibility. The 4th grade crew didn't let the absence of wind stand in their way as they hoisted the sails while belting out sea chanties. To thank them for their hard work and song, a pod of Orcas breached close enough to the ship for one student to proclaim, "He winked at me!"

6th graders went to Camp Orkila on Orcas Island. As traffic was worse than anticipated, they missed the intended ferry sailing and had to wait 2 hours for the next. With some cohorts, this may have presented any number of challenges. Fortunately for the staff and parent chaperones involved, we experienced 120 tweenagers that productively and positively busied themselves in conversation, card games and beach jaunts. As always, Orkila delivered a fantastic learning experience for all. Please be sure to ask a 6th grader for highlights!

This week and next, K-8 students will develop "Steps for a Healthy Planet". Each student will articulate a commitment to hopefully reduce our impact on climate change. These commitments will be written on footprint outlines that will adorn the walls leading to the central display in the main lobby. As families, we invite you to make your own commitments to bring to add to the collective.

In advance, thanks for all that you do for our community, both local and global.

In partnership,

Darren, Annie and Neil

Elementary News
Elementary Enrichment & Camp Fees
Families should have received an email today regarding payment of elementary and enrichment fee.

What is an enrichment fee?  During the school year, your child will participate in field trips, artist-in-residence programs, or other special class projects.  Instead of asking for payment each time one of these activities takes place, we ask parents to pay one fee in the beginning of the school year. This fee is called the Enrichment Fee (or field trip fee).  Our elementary enrichment fee is $100 per student.

Payment Options?   We have a new payment system (SchoolPay) that allows you to easily make and track payments throughout the year. You can reach the new payment portal by logging in to your student's SPS Source account. Click here  for instructions on how to access your student's Source account and the SchoolPay system. You may also pay this fee by dropping off a check (payable to Salmon Bay School) in the volunteer coordinator's office. We ask that all enrichment fees be paid by December 1st.  Scholarship funds are available.

What About Camp Fees?
In the spring, each of our elementary classes will also participate in a camp experience. Fees related to that camp experience will be collected in the spring. If you would like to pay the camp fee (which varies by grade) in advance, you are welcome to do so.  Camp fee reminders will be sent to families approximately 2-3 months before their class camp experience. Camp fees have been loaded into your student's SchoolPay account for easy payment and tracking.

2019 - 2020 Camp Fees:
$25 Kindergarten fee:    Extended day at Camp Long
$100 First Grade:           One night at Camp Indianola
$100 Second Grade:      One night at Camp Indianola
$200 Third Grade:          Two nights at Camp Colman
$225 Fourth Grade:        Two nights at Camp Seymour                                          and Adventuress Sailing
$300 Fifth Grade:            Three nights at Camp
                                        Island wood
Scholarships?  No students miss out on opportunities to attend field trips or camp due to financial circumstances.  If you would like to request a scholarship, please contact Jodi Russell, Volunteer Coordinator or Annie Parker, Assistant Principal.  Contributions to the scholarship fund are always welcome.  You may add a scholarship donation to your check or add a donation to your online SchoolPay shopping cart.
