Jumping into Kindergarten

Kindergarten families and staff kicked off the school year at our Jumpstart Pick-Up Party on Monday, August 17!  Students and families safely participated in an around campus event, picking up materials and Salmon Bay t-shirts as well as and saying hi to teachers and staff (from 6 feet away!). Tuesday through Friday, students logged online for small group lessons, read alouds and a mini art lesson with Trevor. We're so proud of the Kindergartners for taking on these new challenges remote learning brings!

Grades 3-8 Laptop Distribution

Thank you to everyone for their participation and patience during our laptop distribution event earlier this week. A big shout out to staff for their hard work too! (Now we just have to resolve all the tech issues - but we'll get there!)

New Staff Introductions
We are excited to introduce the following new Salmon Bay staff members to our community!

Hi, my name is Surojit Pierce (Suro). I grew up in Fairbanks, Alaska. I like being outdoors and I love to play all kinds of sports, but my favorite is soccer. I have been in the education field for 11 years in a variety of roles including Paraeducator, Reading Specialist, Behavior Specialist, Counselor and now an Assistant Principal. I have worked in high schools, middle schools, and elementary schools. What brings me the most joy from working in education is supporting all students and families. I feel successful when I can make school a fun and enjoyable experience where students are happy and growing academically, socially and emotionally. In my spare time I like to workout, watch movies, try new restaurants, and coffee shops.

Hello, Salmon Bay! My name is Jorah Kotary and I will be your part-time Speech Language Pathologist one day per week. I moved to Seattle from Oklahoma City this summer, and I'm excited to start my 5th year as a SLP. Some of my favorite things are my dog, crafts, and being outside. I can't wait to incorporate some of these things with students during our virtual learning this year!

Hello Salmon Bay! My name is Mr. B I am a grad student from Central Washington University and I'll be student teaching with Ms. T this year. I am super excited to begin my career in physical education and health! I am looking forward to learning as much as I can. I enjoy fitness and hiking with my dogs. I love dragon ball z and I'm a big fan of Zelda. Thanks for having me!

Hello! I'm Erika Groudle, this fall I am Karly Muller's student teacher. I have spent the last few years living in Bellingham and attending Western Washington University. When I'm not in the virtual classroom I spend my time gardening and playing Animal Crossing.

Hi! I'm David Bauernfeind and I'm excited to join the teaching team at Salmon Bay this year. I grew up in the Midwest and followed my partner, Sarah, to Seattle in the fall of 2015. I have been teaching in the intermediate SEL classroom at B.F. Day Elementary for the past four years. I was fortunate to be able to pursue my Master's in Special Education at the University of Washington while working as an IA, and then transition to the role of classroom teacher in the same classroom. In addition to education, some of my other passions include making music, spending time outdoors, mycology, and relaxing at home with my partner and our dog, Daphne.

My name is Megan McCarroll and I will be teaching 5th grade this year. I am thrilled to be joining the Salmon Bay family! I grew up in Portland, Oregon and have remained a Pacific Northwesterner at heart. Since graduating from college in 2015, I've taught in two different regions of Nepal, worked at a Waldorf-inspired charter school in Portland, and completed my graduate studies in England, where I focused on trauma-informed and therapeutic approaches to education.  I'm looking forward to meeting my students and connecting with families at Salmon Bay!

Welcome to Salmon Bay

Happy First Day of School!  We did it!  We've launched the school year and are on our way!

Today and this coming week we are working on connections - literal connections and relational ones.  It is our goal by next Friday to have all of our community able to connect utilizing online tools and platforms, and to connect with all students and all families during our Family Connections time.

I'm working to connect to my children's journey this year and not get too lost in the administrivia of meeting invites, passwords, turn-in folders and tech platforms.  I'm thinking about how I can celebrate with them, exchange stories about our school experience and teachers who inspire us. I'm thinking about how I want to respond - how I can set the tone and support them in their frustration or anxiety.   I'm thinking about how our family can create comfortable spaces in our home that are set up for learning.

I and our admin team are deeply empathetic to the hard work that you as parents and caregivers are doing to support students' learning, health, and social-emotional needs.  Thank you in advance for taking time to connect with our school team this coming week and sharing how we can support your family and your student this year.

To Connection and Partnership,

Neil

Office Notes

As we launch into this school year, we know that you may have questions or communication issues that pop up. Please know that we are here to help you!

Tech Issues
Way to go Salmon Bay!  Although there were widespread connectivity issues at the district level, of our 665 students only 17 students were not present and accounted for.  The connectivity issue is known and being worked on by the district and we will get any new information out to you before Tuesday.

Thank you for your perseverance and patience, without that we would be sunk!  We all feel blessed to be part of this wonderful community. We know we will get through this together and that things will continue to get smoother.
Please login to your district machines on Tuesday morning and let us know if things are not working as expected.

Office Hours
The school office will be staffed during the week from 8 am - 4 pm. Please note, however, that the school building remains closed to all students and families. If you need to pick up or drop off any items, please contact the office to schedule a time. Additional information regarding K-2 iPad distribution and student materials distribution will be sent as soon as plans are finalized.

Attendance
If your student will be absent from school for any reason (illness, travel plans) please contact our office at 206-252-1728 or email  salmonbay.attendance@seattleschools.org
Knowing there is a reason for your student's absence helps streamline attendance and communication.

School Directories

This year we are producing two different directories to help families communicate and connect with one another.

Grade Level Directory
Next week, families will receive a link to complete a grade level directory form. In addition to basic contact information, this grade level directory allows families to share information about where they live and specific student interests. Participation is optional and families can select which information they would like to share with families across their grade band.

Kindergarten families have already received their K directory. Sixth grade families received a link to participate last week. Only sixth grade families should complete this link. All other grades will receive a directory email and participation link next week.

All School Directory
We will once again be offering families a chance to participate in our traditional all school directory this year. When families complete the grade level directory form, they will have a chance to opt into the all school directory.
Jodi Russell, Volunteer Coordinator, will be following up with kindergarten and sixth grade families next week regarding participation in the all school directory (all other grades will have the chance to opt in when completing their directory forms).

FOSB News

FOSB is our school parent teacher organization.

Friends of Salmon Bay, or FOSB, is our school's version of a Parent/Teacher Organization. When you join our community, you are automatically a FOSB member. There's no application, no dues, and you have an opportunity to share your voice on every issue that we discuss. Your participation makes us stronger and we invite you to join us!

Our first meeting will be at 7:00 pm, next Thursday, September 10th via Zoom. You can find links to the agenda and meeting below.

This will be a unique year to be a parent of school age children. Salmon Bay has a tradition of an active parent community and we're looking for new ways to harness this energy. We realize it will be challenging to build a community virtually and we welcome your help and creativity in finding ways to bring parents and children together.

See you Thursday...

Thanks

Shawna and Scott

Special Education Disability Committee
At the upcoming FOSB meeting, we will be discussing a proposal to form a new Special Education Disability Committee. This committee aims to provide parents, staff and students with resources to gain a deeper understanding of neurodiversity and disabilities and to help families navigate special education. You can read our committee proposal here.

Join us! This is a new committee so there is plenty of room for your participation and ideas. Please consider attending an upcoming committee meeting and/or helping to plan future events. Email Cheryl Jenrow cljenrow@gmail.com

Meet Your 2020 - 2021 FOSB Officers

Scott Koch is parent to 8th grade student Jasper. He's been a co-chair of FOSB and the Legislative Committee. Born and raised in Bellevue and Seattle, Scott has haunted the mountains of the PNW running, biking and skiing since an early age. He coaches girls soccer and track for Salmon Bay and enjoys every minute of it.

Shawna Sullivan is 3rd grade student, Maci Ford's mom, Seattle University and Rutgers grad who grew up in Spokane.  She came to Seattle for the grunge in 1992 and stayed for the coffee and great camping.  She enjoys supporting the school as co-chair of FOSB and BLT, cherishes the many parent friendships she has made in the community, and loves watching the kids grow up.  She is always scheming to return to the Irish countryside.

Janelle Norman has recently stepped into the role of FOSB Elementary Treasurer. Her son, Ben, is a 2nd grade student in Carol's class and she has a future Salmon Bay student at home, 4 year-old son, Jude.

Kelly Tilford is your new FOSB  Secretary. Her children are the Chambers girls. Carys is in 5th grade and Amy is in 2nd. Kelly loves connecting with people in our community and hearing your ideas for our school.

Danielle Steele is the FOSB MS Treasurer. This is her family's 13th and final year at Salmon Bay. Her son is an eighth grader on the Cascade Team and our daughter (who started Salmon Bay as a kindergartener) is a senior at Ballard High. Prior to this year, Danielle volunteered as a Co-chair and Director, and has led the Garden Committee for the last three years. The Salmon Bay community was one of the things that drew her to this school. Parent involvement has always been key. While this is a different year, she looks forward to helping FOSB figure out how we can remain connected as a community, supporting one another in new ways. She hopes to see you on our monthly FOSB Zoom meetings!

Thank you to this fabulous team of parent volunteers for stepping into leadership roles this year!
