Seen in the Hallways
Today, our elementary students joined together for the first Friday Sing of the year. One of the morning highlights was this fast and fun round of Dum Dum Ditty, featuring featuring some of our newest staff members.

Loud cheering led me to the doorway of Mr. G's gym this week. It's been lovely to hear student voices filling the hallways and to see their smiling faces as they participate in a wide variety of first week activities.

Whether your student is interested in working onstage or backstage, we have a place for you! Find out more and sign up here.

Auditions start September 16th.
For more information, email Program Coordinator Biz Freebairn  or find us at in the After School SignUp Genius catalog.

Counselor's Corner: Transitions

The beginning of each school year brings excitement, nerves, new friends, the loss of old friends, and is a big transition.  Transitions bring change and change is hard on our bodies, minds, and emotions- adults too!  Some of us deal better with change than others- expect fluctuating emotions, melt-downs (especially at home), and need for extra reassurance. This is all really normal.  Everyone is exhausted.  If possible, limit the amount of outside activities and provide extra down-time and family time until things have settled down.  If you are still concerned about your child's emotions or behavior, please reach out to your child's teacher(s) or to us.  We are here to help!

Warmly,

From the Library

Introducing Our New Librarian
Greetings!  My name is Ben Gallup and I am overjoyed to be the new teacher librarian at Salmon Bay.  I did my undergraduate studies at The Evergreen State College, with a concentration in Political Economy and Philosophy.  I earned my Master in Teaching, with Honors, from University of Washington in 2015.  I have taught English/Language Arts and Social Studies at Dearborn Park International School for the last four years, to grades one, four, and five.  I aim to develop a lively library program that serves the needs and desires of the whole Salmon Bay school community.  I look forward to working with you all!

A message From Linda
Dear Salmon Bay families:
Almost 15 years ago, I came to Salmon Bay as a substitute librarian for what was to be a three-month maternity leave. At the end of last year, I made the decision to resign my position at Salmon Bay. Much has changed over the past 15 years, but the Salmon Bay community continues to have a strong hold on my heart. It's been an honor, and a privilege, to have been your librarian! Please know that I will always take a part of this community with me as I continue my professional journey. I wish you all the best for the upcoming school year, and remember: Don't spill the beans!

Welcome to Salmon Bay

Hello Salmon Bay Families,

Welcome to another exciting year of school!  We are delighted to see the many familiar and also new faces within our building.  We are so glad you are here with us.

This week has been a great start to the year with all the hard work teachers put into building a welcoming environment in their classrooms as well as team building activities and learning to set the stage for a fun and productive year of growth.  We look forward to welcoming our smallest and mightiest students (our Kindergartners) on Monday!

As many of you know, last year we came together as school to reimagine our School Vision to align to the values that our current community holds.  We were grateful for all the participation of staff, teachers and families in leading us to our 5 pillars:

At Salmon Bay...
  • We plan for the active engagement of all students by providing multiple ways to access and express learning.
  • We teach social skills and emotional intelligence to create a safe school community and promote responsibility for each other.
  • We grow and build confidence through hands-on classroom and field-based learning experiences.
  • We investigate authentic problems that deepen our understanding and curiosity about the world.
  • We engage in the work of social justice by examining identity, building knowledge and developing skills to challenge inequities

It is going to be a fantastic year, and we are thrilled to be in partnership with you.

Here's to the first week of school and beyond,
Annie, Darren, and Neil

Volunteer Information

A note from the Volunteer Coordinator
Welcome to the 2019-2020 school year! What better way to wind down after a great first week than to peruse your first Friday bulletin of the year?

We email a weekly bulletin each Friday afternoon. The Bulletin is how we share information about school happenings, upcoming events, teacher requests, student opportunities, and more. Many of our fall events and activities will be starting soon and you'll be able to read all of the details here. Be sure to check the Friday Bulletin each week!

Volunteer Applications
All volunteers are required to complete the online volunteer application and pass the background check before volunteering at school, on field trips or at camp.

If you completed this process last year, your background check is valid for two years.  Please note additional forms may be required - see below:

What forms are required for volunteering?
There are up to three forms that volunteers may need.
1. The Volunteer Application/ background check (everyone needs this)
2. The Chaperone Form for K-12 Day & Overnight Field Trips (volunteers who attend camp or chaperone field trips need to complete this form)
3. The Drivers Check List (drivers who transport students must complete this form).

If you completed the Field Trip Chaperone Form or Driver's Checklist form last year, those will also be valid for a second year. If you did not complete these forms, you will be asked to do so prior to chaperoning or transporting students this year.

What if I volunteered at a different school last year?
If your student changed schools, we'd love to have you volunteer at Salmon Bay this year! You can update your school selection in your volunteer profile. Staff at Salmon bay won't have access to your approved volunteer application unless you complete this step. you can also update your address, phone number or emergency contact in your profile.

Need to complete your initial Volunteer Application?
This is the perfect time to complete your background check and be ready to support students on field trips or in the classroom! You can access all of the online Volunteer Forms here. Start by completing the Volunteer Application. Once that is complete, you can also select the Field Trip Form and/or Driver Checklist.  Should you have any trouble or have questions, please let us know.

I'm not sure what paperwork I did last year. How can I check? We are happy to check for you! Just email Britta Bowman or Jodi Russell

Drop-off and Pick-up Procedures

Morning Supervision
We ask that students enter our campus starting at 8:30 am and move to one of three supervised areas until the bell rings: playground/upper field, cafeteria or library. If you need to enter the building before 8:30 am, please have your student remain with you.  If you have questions, please speak with Caitlin Racey in the main office.

Drop Off and Pick Up Locations
For student and family safety, do not drop off or pick up students on NW 65th Street or next to the bus zone on 19th Avenue.

Please drop off and pick up in the loading zone on the east side of the building (18th
Avenue). We ask that drivers do not drive north on 18th Avenue. Limiting the street to southbound traffic helps our crossing guard manage congestion and ensures all students are leaving and entering cars from the curb side of the street. Do not park in the loading zone or idle while waiting for your student. If you must enter the building for any reason, you must park elsewhere.

Parking
Seattle Municipal Code prohibits parking a vehicle within five feet of a driveway or alley. Help us be a good neighbor by respecting driveways, bus zones, and other no parking areas around our school.
