Sustaining Healthy Churches
"So those who welcomed his message were baptized, and that day about three thousand persons were added. They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers." ~ Acts 2:41-42

Imagine if every one of our churches in the Diocese of San Diego could be perfectly healthy, vibrant, and thriving. What if all our churches are engaged by faith like the early church?

Our diocesan executive council created the Healthy Church Work Group (HCWG) in June 2018. The HCWG aims to:

  • develop criteria for strategic resource use
  • review 2017 and 2018 parochial report data
  • activate resource sharing groups
  • support small churches, and
  • focus on developing community relationships with other dioceses and denominations.

In our earliest meetings, we asked ourselves, "What do we mean by 'healthy church?'" We set out to define what makes healthy churches healthy. We needed to understand healthy church attributes. From our discussions, I can tell you that size, campus facilities, wealth, demographics, church architecture, or average Sunday attendance do not necessarily make a healthy church.

Our work group chose an excellent resource that we studied together and fed lively discussions. It is The Healthy Churches’ Handbook by Robert Warren. The Diocese of London used this handbook extensively over many years. It provided us with useful assessment tools to help congregations. Our workgroup adopted the seven marks of healthy churches from the handbook. They are:

  1. Energized by faith, rather than just keeping things going or trying to survive
  2. Outward-looking focus, with a 'whole life' rather than a 'church life' concern
  3. Seeks to find out what God wants, discerning the Spirit’s leaning rather than trying to please everyone
  4. Faces the cost of change and growth, rather than resisting change and avoiding failure
  5. Operates as a community, rather than functioning as a club or religious organization
  6. It makes room for all, being inclusive rather than exclusive
  7. Does a few things and do them well, focused rather than frenetic

We also learned that there are angels in the church. Robert Warren says each church has an angel. To understand the angels of a church, we must understand a church's history, contexts, personality, and vocation. Each of our churches has a personality and style of its own.

Dioceses have angels, too. In a recent HCWG meeting, one member described the angel of our diocese to be a gardening angel that nurtures, tends, prepares, and cares for all the plants (churches) in the garden. Another member said the diocese is the transformational angel that helps churches evolve and emerge from the context of its history, with the vigor of its personality to embrace its vocation.

If we think about our health, most of us visit our doctor regularly. Just as a physician first checks our vital signs to assess our essential health, the workgroup checks church vital signs, too. We looked at the 2017 and 2018 parochial report data that all churches send in annually to the Episcopal Church. We studied data trends and changes over ten years. We know that church wellness goes way beyond the data. So we sent facilitators to guide a few churches through the healthy church assessment exercise using the seven marks of healthy churches listed above..

Next we considered several approaches to assist struggling churches in four areas:
  1. mitigation of church debt
  2. attention to small churches
  3. developing leadership
  4. building and recognizing partnerships.

It is important to provide immediate relief to ailing churches. We want to revitalize churches rather than close them. Some churches need immediate help managing debt. We saw smaller churches who needed training in good church practices and sharing resources. We gathered small church roundtables to help churches learn and support one another.

Our work continues. In the future, we hope to share our learning at the February 2020 Leadership Academy.

Sosteniendo Iglesias Saludables

  2. atención a pequeñas iglesias
