I am so pleased to be the new Canon to the Ordinary in the Diocese of San Diego. One of the chief questions I’ve been asked in these early weeks is “just what is a canon to the ordinary?” The Episcopal Church seems to have a unique word for everything! I am serving as an assistant to the ordinary, or in other words, the bishop. I have a variety of tasks: working with congregations and clergy in times of clergy transitions, organizing diocesan convention, serving as diocesan liturgist and working with congregations on congregational development. 

I have been active in this diocese for a long time, both as a lay person and a clergy person. I’ve been lucky enough to be part of many different congregations and to serve in many different capacities.

After my husband and I moved to San Diego in the late 80’s I started attending St. Timothy’s. At that time, the church was meeting in a school multi-purpose room, and the altar guild carried the elements to church in a pink suitcase. When I was Senior Warden we built a building (oh, can I appreciate the hard work that goes into a building project!). I’ve worshiped at St. Bartholomew’s, served as intern at St. Mark’s and Trinity, and served as clergy person at All Souls’, St. Mary’s and Grace. I’ve been on Executive Council, Standing Committee and the Commission on Ministry. I know and love my diocese. I appreciate how congregations big and small can share the good news of Jesus with a hurting world. I know the power of the people of God coming together in teams to make things happen.

The bishop has called us to a season of discipleship, evangelism and service. These three are the foundation of our lives as Christians. The diocesan staff is committed to doing all that we can to assist congregations in living out the Great Commission – to go and make disciples of all nations.

Some of that work that we do sounds exciting, and some of it doesn’t. The diocesan office is a busy place, with the staff working on things as diverse as assisting with lawsuits over Prop. 65 to welcoming new clergy to the diocese. One of those things is more fun than the other! But both are important, and all of it is done in order to support the congregations and people of the diocese.

I am looking forward to getting to know all of the congregations in the diocese in a deeper way.

Canon to the Ordinary

Me complace ser la nueva Canon a lo Ordinario en la Diócesis de San Diego. Una de las preguntas principales que me han hecho en estas primeras semanas es "¿qué es un canon de lo ordinario?" ¡La Iglesia Episcopal parece tener una palabra única para todo! Estoy sirviendo como asistente de lo ordinario, o, en otras palabras, de la obispa. Tengo una variedad de tareas: trabajar con congregaciones y clérigos en tiempos de transiciones del clero, organizar la convención diocesana, servir como liturgista diocesano y trabajar con las congregaciones en su desarrollo congregacional. 

He estado activa en esta diócesis durante mucho tiempo, tanto como laica y clérigo. He tenido la suerte de ser parte de muchas congregaciones diferentes y de servir en muchas capacidades diferentes.

Después de que mi esposo y yo nos mudamos a San Diego a finales de los 80, comencé a asistir a St. Timothy's. En ese momento, la iglesia se reunía en una sala de usos múltiples de una escuela, y el gremio del altar llevaba los elementos a la iglesia en una maleta rosa. Cuando yo era el Senior Warden construimos un edificio (¡Yo puedo apreciar el trabajo que es un proyecto de construcción!). He adorado en St. Bartholomew’s, servido como pasante en St. Mark’s y Trinity, y serví como clérigo en All Souls’s, St. Mary’s & Grace. He estado en el Consejo Ejecutivo, el Comité Permanente y la Comisión del Ministerio. Conozco y amo a mi diócesis. Aprecio cómo las congregaciones grandes y pequeñas pueden compartir las buenas noticias de Jesús con un mundo dolido. Conozco el poder del pueblo de Dios que se une en equipos para hacer que las cosas sucedan.

La obispa nos ha llamado a una temporada de discipulado, evangelismo y servicio. Estos tres son el fundamento de nuestra vida como cristianos. El personal diocesano está comprometido a hacer todo lo posible para ayudar a las congregaciones a vivir la Gran Comisión– a ir y hacer discípulos de todas las naciones.

Partes del trabajo que hacemos suena emocionante, y otras no. La oficina diocesana es un lugar ocupado, con el personal trabajando en cosas tan diversas como ayudar con demandas sobre la Prop. 65 hasta dar la bienvenida a nuevo clero a la diócesis. ¡Una de esas cosas es más divertida que la otra! Pero ambos son importantes, y todo esto se hace con el fin de apoyar a las congregaciones y personas de la diócesis.

Estoy anhelando conocer a todas las congregaciones de la diócesis de una manera más profunda.
