Live multi-platform worship in the sanctuary and online through Zoom!

Theme for May: The Gift of Pluralism

Rev. Alison writes, "Conversations about religion and spirituality are full of -isms: atheism, agnosticism, polytheism, monotheism, animism, humanism, paganism... In Unitarian Universalism, we embrace all these -isms, and many more. We welcome plural -isms, pluralism, as a gift."

Worship Services in May

May 5  Solidarity Forever: Celebrating International Worker's Day - Rev. Alison Duren-Sutherland (remote) and Dorothy Gibson

Rev. Alison and special guest former union organizer Dorothy Gibson will share the connections between faith values and the rights of working people. Music Director Tom Burt and the Saltwater Choir with Betty Beck on banjo will weave workers' anthems from Dolly Parton, Woody Guthrie, and Pete Seeger through this celebration of the power of working folk.

May 12  Flower Communion and Honoring the Mothers in our Lives - Rosie Olds and Serena Spaulding

The Flower Communion is an annual ritual that celebrates beauty, human uniqueness, diversity, and community. This year we celebrate on Mother’s Day, honoring the beauty, uniqueness and diversity of all the people in our lives who have mothered us as well as our Mother Earth.

There will be two alters set up. One for the Flower Communion Ceremony; everyone in-person is invited to bring a flower for this alter. The other is to honor mothers; you are welcome to bring a picture of your mother(s) or an object to represent and honor them. Everyone, and especially Zoomers, please send a picture of you with a flower and a picture of those who have mothered you to Rev. Alison at minister@saltwaterchurch.org by Wednesday May 8.

May 19  Agreeing to Disagree: The Gifts of Pluralism in our Past, Present & Future - Rev. Alison Duren-Sutherland (in-person)

Amidst the Radical Reformation of the 1500's, the only Unitarian kindom in hisotry declared freedom of concience and religious toleration. 400 years later, the Unitarain Universalist faith moved beyond Christianity to draw inspiration from many sources. This means that the person sitting next to you at church probably has beliefs that differ from yours. Rev. Alison offers tools for translating religious language from sources other than your own, and reminds us that while our beliefs may be different, we are all accountable to our shared values and the principles we affirm and promote.

May 26  Flowing Along the Way: Lessons from the Tao te Ching - Rev. Alison Duren-Sutherland (in-person)

"True goodness is like water. Water's good for everything. It doesn't compete. It goes right to the low, loathsome places, and so finds the way." --Lao Tsu, translated by Urusula K. LeGuin

Thousands of years ago in China, during a time of political and social upheaval, a small volume was written to help people find the way in uncertain times. Today, in a similar period of upheaval, this volume's paradoxical wisdom can still help us find our way.

We'll be removing ivy from around the trees, picking up trash, and trimming up the overgrowth from the winter. Help out for as little or long as you like. There's plenty to do and no skill required!

Pizza will be provided and you are encouraged to bring your own drinks or snacks to share. Saltwater has tools to lend out if you'd like to use some of ours. Flower Communion and Honoring the Mothers in our Lives

Deadline Wednesday, May 8

In Person - Saltwater Church

Saltwater Flower Communion and Mother's Day will be on Sunday, May 12. Originally created by Unitarian minister Norbert Čapek of Prague, Czechoslovakia, the Flower Ceremony was introduced to the United States by Rev. Mája Čapek, Norbert's widow, and has been celebrated for 100 years. In the ceremony, everyone brings a flower to share, and has the opportunity to take home a different flower. This year, in keeping with our commitment to multiplatform worship, we're also including a virtual flower communion and honoring mothers as part of the service. If you'd like to participate, please email (by May 8) a photo of yourself with a flower and a photo of someone who has mothered you to be included in a video montage to Rev. Alison at minister.swuuc@gmail.com. ***image credit: Bubba

Staff Transition Announcement

Farewell to Nina

With deep gratitude and more than a little bit of sadness, we share with you that Nina will be leaving her role with Saltwater in June to return to California to be nearer to family, and to work on a documentary about the environmental degradation of the small town where she grew up. While we will miss Nina's incredible work to support the multiplatform presence of our congregation, we are also so excited for her next chapter, and we look forward to welcoming her back to screen her film at Saltwater in the years to come. In partnership with Nina, we are beginning the hiring process to find a new person to support our mutliplatform worship and other events at Saltwater. Thank you, Nina, for your service to this community. You will be missed!

We're Hiring! Seeking Audiovisual and Sound Technician

As we say farewell to Nina, we are hopeful in saying hello to a new Audiovisual and Sound Technician to join our collaborative team of staff and volunteers. Please help spread the word! The AV/Sound Tech ensures quality sound in-person and on Zoom, displays slides on screen, controls camera angles, and helps make sure the technology that supports our multi-platform Sunday services is running smoothly. The full job description is available at https://saltwaterchurch.org/were-hiring/.

Ways to Live Our Values

Share The Plate for May

Project Feast

Half of all undesignated donations received in the month of May will be shared with Project Feast. Project Feast empowers refugee and immigrant cooks by preparing them for culinary careers and becoming food entrepreneurs. Participants reside in South King County and many are low-income women. https://projectfeast.org/donate/

Of note are four programs:

-The Culinary Skills Apprentice program combines classroom, kitchen, and ESL lessons to prepare English Language learners for a good job in a food business or to start their own food business.

-Family Meals to Go is a weekly meal which can be ordered on Tuesday for pickup on Thursdays between 12-2p at the Café in Kent. Each week’s meal is inspired by one of the apprentices. Ordering is open to anyone and vegan options are available. Catering is also available which Saltwater enjoyed at our recent Pledge Drive celebration dinner.

-The Community Meals program provides culturally appropriate emergency meals for immigrant and refugee families as well as seniors. The Kent School District participates in this supplemental food program.

-Ubuntu Street Café opened in February. Lunch is offered from 11:30 – 1:30, Thursdays and Fridays. It located in the historic Titusville Station in Kent, WA.

Due to the generosity of a matching donor, the total amount of all undesignated funds in today’s offering basket will be donated to Project Feast AND half of what we collect will go toward Saltwater UU’s general operating fund.

You can make a donation to share the plate through the donate button on our website http://saltwaterchurch.org/stewardshipstewardship-overview/stewardshipdonate/ or mail a check to the church office with “basket” in the memo line: Saltwater UU Church, 25701 14 Pl S., Des Moines, WA 98198. ****image credit: Kindel Media

Climate Message of the Week

Sometimes it feels like there’s not much we can do as individuals to make a difference in the climate crisis. That’s why the book Birding to Change the World: A Memoir is so inspiring. Author Trish O’Kane tells the story of how watching birds changed her life after she lost everything in Hurricane Katrina. She writes about how watching a single cardinal eventually led her to become an environmental writer and advocate. Learn why O’Kane says that the phrase “study the need for” is an important tool to use in governmental meetings, why pie can be a powerful aid in environmental organizing, and how she uses the activist strategies of birds. Whether you’re a birder or not, this book will entertain you while it teaches you how to be an effective protector of the natural world.

Are there topics or questions you’d like to see covered in future Climate Messages? Email suggestions to Sheri Jacobson at sheridjacobson@yahoo.com.

The camp is based on four basic pillars, including community, spirituality, justice, and equality. After attending, youth will be able to articulate beliefs grounded in UU theology and values, develop spiritual discipline, engage in social change, and build personal and religious resilience. There are plenty of fun activities such as field games, crafts, hikes, swimming, bonfires, and more. Come join us! Register here: Camp Blue Boat in the PNW | Pacific Western Region | UUA.org
