  • A spectacular 5 bedroom, 5 bath rental home in Mont Tremblant, Quebec, Canada for one week. Ski in/ski out or go for breath-taking hikes in the spring, late summer or fall. You choose your time!
  • An amazing home in prestigious San Diego beach community. 4 bedrooms and 3 baths will take care of you and yours in grand style right across the street from the beach!
Or maybe you are looking for that original gift that no one else could possibly get:
  • A priceless painting, owned by Perry Como, of our Saluda Depot in its original location.
  • Antique porch rockers with canvas seats hand painted by artists extraordinaire Anne and Bill Jameson

  • and Dorrie V. McKinley. Nothing says Saluda like our Oreo cow!
  • A trip soaring through the trees on the Zipline Canopy Tour for two from The Gorge.

This is held the last Saturday after Thanksgiving each year. Saludians are invited to turn out on Main Street before 2pm and cheer the riders on. All motorcycle riders are invited to participate in this ride. Motorcycle riders come in from both North and South Carolina to make sure that children in need get a toy for Christmas.

The route the riders follow starts in Saluda, NC, at the Saluda Fire Department parking area with room for up to 1000 + bikes.  They move out in parade fashion and travel down highway US-176 to pass through Tryon, NC, while in route to Landrum, SC.  Arriving in Landrum, SC, the riders turn left and go through the town of Landrum, SC crossing over Interstate 26 in route to Green Creek, NC. Once they arrive there, they then turn North on NC-9 to Mill Spring, NC.  Then riders turn West on NC-108 to Columbus, NC, and terminate at the front steps of the Court House.  There will be ample parking in front of the Court House for the motorcycles to park in normal diagonal fashion. The toys are placed on the steps and wall for all to see and admire.  The column of bikers each year is about 10 miles long.  They travel at about 35 mph on the entire route in staggered 2 by 2 fashion.
The Polk County Sheriff's office would like to thank all of the motorcycle riders that participate in this event and hope that it will only grow larger each year.  For more information contact Polk County Sheriff's Office at 828-894-3001. Visit website . Keep up to date on Facebook.

9:30am-1:00pm
Saluda Fire Department
Free for Kids Five and Up

The Workshop Helpers want to invite Saluda's children five and up to the workshop again this year so we can teach, inspire, and encourage them through creativity. The Workshop offers personal instruction of art projects related to Christmas in the form of ornaments and gifts. The kids get to practice their artistic ability, imagination, patience, cooperation and gratitude through art. We create projects using lots of different mediums, such as recycled products, beading, felting, food gifts, nature inspired gifts, origami, and much more. They will take home projects that will be cherished for years to come.

They aren't the only ones who benefit though...we, the adults, love to share with the kids who come. It's a wonderful experience for everyone. If you'd like to be a helper, just call Laura Fields at 828-749-4521. I encourage creative and kid-loving people (notice I didn't say women) to join us. I wouldn't be able to pull this project off without my volunteers, and for them, I am very grateful. Please join us if you'd like to be a part of something very special.
Parents, please don't bring children under five as the projects are challenging. No food or drink allowed. No unattended children and parents are allowed on art floor. We provide a special place just for you where you can do a project of your own or watch the kids without being right beside them.

See You There!

3rd Annual Golf Tournament
SHD 3rd Annual Golf Tournament was another huge success and helped raise funds for operation of the Depot and museum.

Thank you to all of the golfers, volunteers, board members, and friends of the Depot for supporting this year's tournament! It was a very fun and successful day with beautiful weather at Kenmure. Jessica Justice came very, very close to making the hole-in-one as breaths were held and was only about a foot away from the $10,000 cash prize! There is always next year.

Because of all of you, we raised over $13,500 in net proceeds for the Depot. These funds will be used for operation expenses and to relieve the debt on the Depot.

Thank you again for the part you played in this fundraiser for the Depot.

We hope you enjoy this video from the 3rd annual Saluda Historic Depot golf tournament at Kenmure Golf Country Club, Flatrock. Visit this link on YouTube: https://youtu.be/EbWMa4P63yU

on Saturday mornings at 9:30 am. http://cloveracupuncture.com Jo is a certified Kripalu Movement and Yo-Chi Instructor. She has also completed the Golden Hearts: Senior Fitness Training. Below is a description of Yo-Chi:

Yo-Chi combines two disciplines that have survived for hundreds of years; Yoga and Ta'i Chi. These are the oldest mind body programs still existing today. Yo-Chi is a fusion program that gives you benefits in both stability, strength, mobility, and flexibility. Yoga focuses on stillness and finding stability. T'ai Chi focuses on slow, controlled never ending mobility. Doing these disciplines together, either alternating or in combination, can help increase your overall wellness.

Hello friends, Jane Ella here. First of all, "Feldenkrais" is a German surname which happens to be the name of the man who created the Method. It is pronounced
"fel-dun-krice" .

At Feldenkrais Saluda we use slow, mindful movements designed to help you recognize connections: The infinite ways every part of yourself is interrelated, and the role that this mindfulness plays in your comfort and level of functioning. As you become more aware of these relationships you are better able to sustain your own health and well-being. And, if you ever need treatment or therapy for a medical diag
nosis, you'll benefit more from that treatment. You become more "response-able".

I teach individualized Functional Integration (FI) lessons at my studio in Nostalgia Court. The hands-on manipulations and verbal directions I use are all within each student's independent range of motion, because none of us uses our full potential within that range. Surprisingly, when we explore and respect these boundaries, we discover connections that enable us to extend them. Please use this link to watch several examples of how an FI looks:

Awareness Through Movement (ATM) classes are taught in groups using verbal instruction. Again, students are encouraged to stay within their easy range of motion. I custom-design these classes and teach in varying locations.
enefit
you.

fall colors After an uncommon spring and summer of rain, flood, mudslides, and hurricanes, Saludians are looking forward to a change of seasons. Gone now are summer days and November's winds will blow across ridge tops whistling through the trees, spilling leaves and twirling them in the air.

A breathtaking late fall season extends the palette of red, gold, and russet leaves coloring the mountain sides under cerulean skies. Cool, crisp temperatures awaken the senses and motivate us to get outdoors. Taking a deep breath, the musty scent of dry leaves composting to nourish the ground recalls times of youth jumping in leaf piles and playing outside until dark.

Reflecting on the past season, Saludians are grateful to live on this mountain crest that is the gateway between the low country and the beginning of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Convenient to many larger cities, this small mountain town escapes the worst of extreme weather and Saludians enjoy a slower pace.

November is a time to pause and be thankful for a Saluda lifestyle, for friends and neighbors who are
always there to give a helping hand, and for the natural wonders and beauty of the mountains no matter the season.

Book Signing by Wilmot Irvin
Wilmot Irvin has a new book out! A self-described lawyer by day and novelist by night, Irvin is known to many in Saluda already. His first novel, Jack's Passage, was set in our mountain town. As a boy he spent summers here, and caught the Saluda bug early. He and his wife Jeannie, who is an artist, have a home on Walnut Street where Wilmot has done much of his writing over the past two decades. They have three grown children and an eleven-year-old, and family relationships is a theme that runs deep in Irvin's fiction.

Here's what some book folks are saying about Wilmot's seventh novel, Little Trespasses:
"The characters were delightfully Southern and quirky. I loved the dialogue and the fast-paced flow of the writing. The intertwined stories touching on sexual orientation, sexual affairs, faith, family secrets, special relationships, and criminal activities - from robbery and assault to hate crimes and murder - were all peppered with the appropriate amount of wryness. The twists and turns, the little pieces of information gleaned here and there throughout the novel, all made for an intriguing read. I think this excellent novel will be well-received." ~Sherry Browett, Booklover, Fairfax, VA

" As a long-time fan of Wilmot Irvin's fiction, I thought he had written his best with a quirky little masterpiece titled Chronicle of the Life and Times of Fletcher Lowe. I was wrong. In Little Trespasses, he scales an even higher peak in a quintessential Southern novel about the human heart. The reader won't soon forget the story Irvin spins about Jake Plantain, Jr., a man for all seasons." ~Robert Lamb, author of A Majority of One and Atlanta Blues

"Book Signing: Wilmot Irvin will be signing copies of his new book at Meanwhile, Back In Saluda on Friday, November 23 from 11:00 to 3:00. Wilmot will also sign copies on Saturday, November 24."

Play at Tryon Little Theater
"Dancing at Lughnasa" is described by Frank Rich of the New York Times as "a theatrical masterpiece of beauty and poignancy...it strikes deep chords that words cannot begin to touch". It's a play about five sisters, one Irish summer and the boy who remembers it all.

Michael Mundy was seven years old during this summer in Ballybeg, near Donegal, Ireland. We see it through his eyes now as a grown man, visiting his old homestead where he grew up with his mother and her four sisters. They are a close-knit family with diverse personalities: the devout Catholic, the cheeky joker, the dreamer, the quiet contemplative one, the disenchanted one. And Michael's uncle, the elderly father Jack, has returned from years in Uganda-a very changed man.

This particular summer Michael sees his father - a travelling salesman who never did marry his mother and who pops in and out of their lives on his own terms. He announces he's leaving Ireland to join the International Brigade and fight in the Spanish Civil War. There's a sense that things are about to change.

"Dancing at Lughnasa" opens at the TLT Workshop on November 8 and runs for two weekends, closing November 18. For tickets please visit www.tltinfo.org, or call 828-859-2466. The Workshop box office opens November 1.
Saluda Train Tales
S. Alex Salley, Tales of Saluda
November 16, 2018
S Alex Salley was born in Saluda in 1932 to Dr & Mrs. E M Salley and entered Saluda School in 1939. Being well prepared by the Saluda School System, he entered Clemson College in 1951. He transferred to Alabama Polytechnic Institute in 1953, graduating in civil engineering (1955) and mechanical engineering 1956. After serving in the U.S. Navy from 1957-1977, he completed a Master of Civil Engineering at NC State in 1979 and was employed by the largest family owned engineering and construction company in the U. S. from 1980-1998. Mr. Salley returned to Saluda in the fall of 1998.

Growing up in Saluda, Mr. Salley will recall for the audience "how things were done" in Saluda in the late 30s, during WW II and through the 40's. He will take the audience back in time and tell the story of the day the post office safe was blown up and contents stolen, telling how it was done and how the criminals were never caught.

Alex grew up in a time when families sat on their front porches, boys hunted rabbits and grouse whenever they could, walked everywhere on foot, and an observant teenager pretty much knew what was happening around town when their parents were too busy trying to make a living to notice. And, Alex has an excellent memory. Put those attributes together and you have a man who has enough memories about Saluda to write a book, one that all of us would read cover to cover with delight.

Alex's father was a doctor in Saluda for 25 years serving Southern Railroad for 50 years.

First Heritage Musical Premieres in Saluda
The Saluda Historic Depot Theatre Troupe is producing Saluda's first musical to be premiered on November 17, 2018. The production will depict Saluda's historical progression from the time the Cherokee Indians settled in the land of "green corn" until today. The original play was written by Corinne Gerwe in collaboration with members of the newly-formed Young Acting Krew "YAK" of the Saluda Historic Depot Theatre Troupe, with a musical score written by Dan Foster to be performed by his band, the Radio Rangers.

Corinne Gerwe, who with Bill Jameson co-founded the theatre troupe, recalls attending a Saluda Historic Depot board meeting during a brain-storming session on how the Depot could contribute toward bringing back "Railroad Day" in Saluda. Many remembered when Saluda celebrated this "ole timey" day when townspeople dressed in costume from the early-time era. "I began concentrating on developing this idea into a theatrical event focused on Saluda's heritage and railroad history by including children of Saluda interested in the performing arts. The Young Acting Krew had just been formed, and it seemed the right time to do this. The kids were so excited about creating a heritage play, they have since thrust the idea to realization," says Corinne.

Corinne is an author of several fiction and non-fiction novels, three of which are a series of murder mysteries set in a small town much like Saluda. Her latest mystery, "The Silent Scream of the Straw Man" has just been released. She has been a contributing board member and supporter of the Depot since its inception.

Dan Foster is a singer/songwriter based in Atlanta, Georgia. "Saluda Grade" was written by Dan after walking around Saluda before performing at the Purple Onion and noticed the historical marker describing the remarkable, legendary Saluda Grade. In 2009 it was featured on an album by High Cotton that spent several weeks on the Georgia top 20 Roots music charts. Dan rearranged the song for the play with his current group, The Radio Rangers, in addition to new songs featuring acoustic music with strong vocal harmonies. Writing melodic songs that tell a good story is Dan's passion.

"The history of Saluda is unique but shares a heritage with so many communities across our country.  The railroads were the backbone of our country's growth and touched so many people and communities.  I believe the wisdom to move forward is provided by the struggles of our past.  I am honored to help in this small way to the celebration of Saluda history.  Saluda is a special place," said Dan Foster.

In addition to YAK and the adult Bell Tower Players, there are many others involved in this community-wide production. "The town is excited about this musical and volunteers have jumped in to give their talents and time to costume designing, building stage sets and props, to be extras, do makeup, plan sound and lighting, and video/filming and for cameo appearances of the towns historians and legends," says Corinne.

The production team and the Saluda Historic Depot board hope that everyone who is willing and able will attend this "One Night Only" performance. Tickets will be $10 for everyone 12 years and older and purchased at the door. Children under 12 will be free. Special group arrangements can be made to purchase tickets by calling Corinne. They encourage everyone to put this on their calendars now because you won't want to miss this one-time historical story of Saluda told in a musical format.
The performance will be held at the Party Place & Event Center and owners Bob and Linda Whitaker granted a special concession on the regular event price for the use of the facility. The Party Place & Event Center is at 221 Friendship Church Rd., Saluda, NC. Performance will start at 7pm. Doors open at 6pm.

The Saluda Historic Depot Theatre Troupe was formed to provide a forum for a variety of theatrical performances reflecting the creative spirit of our community. The goal is to produce plays that will include those from legitimate theater, historic depictions of Saluda's rich history, and literary and poetic readings; all will demonstrate local artistry and talent. The Saluda Historic Depot will provide the setting for presentations suitable for its locale and will partner with other venues for settings suitable for each production.

Sponsorships for the Playbill are available; $200 for major sponsor, $25 for all other sponsors. Your name will be printed on the Playbill as a sponsor of the musical.
The musical will benefit the Saluda Historic Depot, a non-profit dedicated to making the historic train station into a museum in order to highlight the history of the railroad, Saluda's downtown, its people, and the history of its natural resources.

A Change at Beverly-Hanks Saluda Office
It has been three years since the successful merger between Cathy Jackson Realty and Beverly-Hanks. "After fulfilling a commitment to the community and to Beverly-Hanks to make sure this transition went smoothly with no changes in quality of service to the community, it's time to hand off the mantra of management of the office. This gives me more time to focus on serving real estate clients in Saluda without the day-to-day responsibility of managing the Beverly-Hanks office. It also leaves me more time to spend enjoying my Saluda community and contributing to the vitality of Saluda's economy. This would not have been possible, without the support of all the Saluda brokers who are still here serving clients in the Saluda Office, and for Lauretta Cook who has stepped in to manage this successful Beverly-Hanks office."

"We are tremendously pleased to name Lauretta Cook as the Broker-in-Charge of our Saluda Office. Her prior experience in leadership roles and love for the community of Saluda position her well to lead our team into the future. This transition also allows Cathy Jackson the opportunity to focus her attention upon activities she is passionate about, serving her real estate clients and continuing to improve the quality of life and economic vitality of the Saluda community."  --Neal Hanks

"I joined Beverly-Hanks several years ago and was so excited when Cathy Jackson chose to bring her real estate company into the Beverly-Hanks family, too. I had just fallen in love with Saluda and bought a home here around the time that decision was made and that brought things full circle for me. Having grown up in a small town in Central Florida, I immediately felt right at home here and have been blessed to find special friends here who have treated me like one of their own. We have a great team of agents at Beverly-Hanks Saluda and enjoy working with people who share an appreciation for this community. North Carolina became our full-time home in 2006 and my 13-year-old son, Fitzhugh and I feel so fortunate to be here". -- Lauretta Cook

Bells for Peace, Veterans' Day 2018
On the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month in 1918, the first World War ended as the guns fell silent. Nations mourned their dead and collectively called for an end to all wars. The United States Congress later designated Armistice Day (now Veterans' Day) to honor and promote peace.

The North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources has invited all 100 counties in the state to participate in a bell-ringing effort to commemorate the Armistice of 1918 and has encouraged the Historic Saluda Committee to spread the word in our area. Bells of all shapes and sizes on churches, schools, government buildings and even hand-held bells are to be tolled eleven times at 11:00 am on Sunday, November 11 to remember the hope of peace.

The U.S. World War I Centennial Commission calls their commemoration of the signing of the Armistice, "Bells for Peace," and encourages groups taking part to conclude ceremonies either quietly or with the playing of taps, with a hymn or a poem or a service of choice.

More than four million American families sent sons and daughters to serve in uniform during the Great War. 116,516 U.S. soldiers died from combat and disease. Another 200,000 were wounded. More than 350,000 African Americans served in the U.S. Military, as did Native Americans and members of other minority groups. For the first time, women joined the ranks of the U.S. Armed Forces. Many served in the Red Cross, the YWCA and other volunteer organizations.

Thankful for Local
Businesses and Shoppers
by Meanwhile, Back in Saluda
November 24th is Small Business Saturday, a day set aside to remember locally owned businesses in our communities. The theme of "shop local" has been around for a while and all of us have seen the poster that threatens that, if we shop in a big-box store, the owner will get a third vacation home!

I was reminded of the importance of local customers and business recently when a very large business establishment opened up near our small town.  As these things sometimes go, a few folks were not happy with the changes coming and were heard a'hollering "Katie, Bar the Door!" Others, however, threw the doors open wide and welcomed the new comers with true Southern hospitality and hopes of inclusion. The lasting impact of this new enterprise has yet to be determined but it got a lot of us thinking about business and our own values, about customers and how locally owned businesses help our communities.

There was quite a lot of news, social media comments and plain ole neighborly scuttlebutt full of opinions, raw data, personal stories and rumors about the upcoming new events and what type customers might come to our area.  People talked about customers (and lack thereof), sales (and lack thereof), advertising (who got to and who was left out), who sells local products (and who whitewashes the truth selling junk and passing it off as "local") and who is a valuable customer (and who is a poor uneducated bumpkin).  Early on in the brouhaha, I admit I too was excited that a zillion customers (who were predicted to be of the rich fancy pants ilk) were going to find my shop and spend piles of money.

I attended a few meetings and heard suggestions made to local business owners about how we should prepare for the new style customers from far-off places who were forecast to arrive in large numbers.   Some of the ideas were interesting but making expensive changes for customers who might only be in town for a few days did not seem like a solid long-term plan. I was not sure what to do. But, thankfully as I was mulling this over on a Thursday night, one of my favorite and best customers came a 'shuffling in after a hard week's work.

Malcolm (made up name that I like because I had a favorite Uncle named Malcolm) works construction.  He is off on Friday; so, every Thursday night, he shows up to buy three specialty beers. One beer for Thursday night, one for Friday and one for Saturday.  No beer on Sunday since he has to go back to work on Monday. Malcolm shows up dirty and tired but is always friendly and ready to share some community news.  He is a hard-working sight to behold and I enjoy seeing him each week and hearing about his work projects.

I reflected on the recommendations about getting ready for the well-off people who might come to town and I thought about Malcolm for a long time.   I remembered a quote from a favorite Dr. Seuss book "I had Trouble in Getting to Solla Sollew". In the story, a fancy fellow comes along with big promises but the main character does what we all should do a bit more often "I did some quick thinking inside of my head."  And so, I did some thinking. It was not quick thinking since the topic of "prepping" for those high-end customers and the changes coming was the hot topic of conversation for over a year. But, I did a lot of pondering it over.

I like Malcolm and all my local regular customers a whole lot. I also like my customers that are "summer people" and I like the tourists and the hurricane evacuees and I welcome the stories from folks who come "home" to visit Saluda.  And I do appreciate the elegant folks that sashay into town every now and then. I enjoy the excitement of events and the possibilities that new shindigs bring to town. But once the noise, crowds and junk food vendors leave, I look forward to seeing local customers like Malcolm again.  They are steady and are here, every week, year-round and after a while, become like part of the family.

Locally based customers are important to the small businesses just as locally owned businesses are essential in small towns. It is often the small businesses that provide services to the community.  Examples include the Tailgate Market, Halloween Stroll, Hometown Christmas, Art Festival and donations to many community causes.  Besides that, who wants to drive 45 minutes to the next town just to buy what we can buy right here in town?

Further incentives come to those who shop local!  We can buy what we need faster, save gas money and come away with much more than the purchases. When I shop locally, I hear news, see friends, pick up flyers about events, share neighborhood stories, ask for help with projects, pass along warnings about roads that are closed or dogs running loose, find out whose kid needs fussing at for driving too fast, who went on vacation and who is sick and needs a meal. We are not going to hear all that at a big-box store!

November is the month set aside to say thanks for all we have and Small Business Saturday is the day to say thanks for the small businesses in our communities. And a very special thanks goes out to our local regular customers, like Malcolm, who are here with us all year long.
In the Neighborhood
By Amy Wood
Be a Meeter-Greeter
Mornings in our house have an extra added sense of urgency this year. Not only do we have to rush one daughter off in time to make the bus to the middle school, but the other one has a new job that requires her to get to Saluda Elementary School quite a bit earlier than we're used to.

"Let's GO!" she says. "We're going to be late!" To be honest, she's starting to sound a little like my husband. I don't mind, though. The reason she's practically pushing us out the door as the sun's still coming up is so she can secure her spot as a "Meeter-Greeter." There's only so many positions available each morning, so it's first-come, first-served. Here's the job description: 1) Wear a cool neon vest. 2) Stand at one of several spots where students arrive to school. 3) Smile. 4) Welcome students with a morning greeting, preferably by name. She loves it. "I know everyone's name," she bragged to me the other day.

I got to see the whole thing in action the other day after a parent-teacher conference and it's just as cute as it sounds. The Meeter-Greeters take their job of spreading morning joy seriously. And the kids on the receiving end seem to gain a bounce in their step or at least a little smile as a result. Whoever thought of this idea is a genius. Imagine starting your day with a handful of people smiling and saying hello as you make your way out into the world. "Good morning, Amy!" "How are you, Amy?" "I love your socks today, Amy!" "Hope you have a great day, Amy!" "High-five!" It's like your own personal pep rally.

Anyone who's ever been to Wal-Mart knows to expect one of their official greeter's friendly faces welcoming you through the doors. And while they may do a good job, I much prefer Saluda's unofficial Meeter-Greeters. They're one of my favorite parts of living here. If you strike up a conversation and make introductions somewhere once, chances are the next time you visit, you'll be greeted by name. I love that. I love walking down the street and recognizing friends, acquaintances, and even people that I'm not sure if I've met before or not. I take the better-safe-than-sorry approach and try to give a big smile to everyone I pass. I hope I've given you a proper greeting at one time or another, even if I couldn't remember your name!

Sometimes such a small greeting can make a big difference. How many little boys and girls at Saluda School have been able to shake off a crummy start to their day with the help of one their neon-vested classmates? I know I owe a lot to chance encounters and brief interactions that somehow turned my frown upside down and helped me keep on keepin' on. It's not always easy to return the favor and pay it forward to others who could use a moment of our time, even if it's just to say good morning. We all get caught up in our own little worlds, worrying about this or that, allowing ourselves to become distracted from all the beautiful moments and people all around us. Sometimes it's all we can do to put one foot in front of another in order to get where we need to go. But when we keep our heads down, we miss out on so many opportunities to connect, to give and to receive through these everyday interactions.

A simple "hello" is a human thing. It's a person to person thing, no matter how each one of us looks, thinks, or believes. A "good morning" doesn't care where you live, how much money is in your pocket, or who you voted for. Stopping to talk with your neighbor is as powerful as it is simple. The truth is we're not as "polarized" as the news tells us we are. Living in a small town means we help each other out, neighbor to neighbor. We gather at the "Pig Out" to break bread (well, buns anyway) and celebrate a man who called everyone "buddy." We do the messy work of democracy one Planning Board meeting at a time. We take turns lending our time and talents to make it all work as best we can.

That's not to say it's easy. I'd be lying if I said it is for me. But I can and we can, at the very least, start small. A smile here, a "howdy" there. A moment of kindness. One, and then another. Meeting and greeting. Could it be that easy to build and strengthen our community across Saluda and beyond? Just ask the kids.
