If you would like to "Adopt" a child or two you can pick up info at City Hall. Please have all donations in by December 19, 2016 so that we may get them to the families.

Free For Kids Five And Up
The Workshop Helpers want to invite Saluda's children five and up to the workshop again this year so we can teach, inspire, and encourage them through creativity. The Workshop offers personal instruction of art projects related to Christmas in the form of ornaments and gifts. The kids get to practice their artistic ability, imagination, patience, cooperation, and gratitude through art. We create projects using lots of different mediums, such as recycled products, beading, felting, food gifts, nature inspired gifts, origami, and much more. They will take home projects that will be cherished for years to come.
They aren't the only ones who benefit though...we, the adults, love to share with the kids who come. It's a wonderful experience for everyone. If you'd like to be a helper, just call Laura Fields at 828-749-4521. I encourage creative and kid-loving people (notice I didn't say women) to join us. I wouldn't be able to pull this project off without my volunteers, and for them, I am very grateful. Please join us if you'd like to be a part of something very special.
Parents, please don't bring children under five as the projects are challenging. No food or drink allowed. No unattended children and parents are allowed on art floor. We provide a special place just for you where you can do a project of your own or watch the kids without being right beside them.

Grants Awarded to SHD
Polk County Community Foundation
The Saluda Historic Depot is pleased to announce it has been awarded a $15,000 challenge grant from the Polk County Community Foundation to support
the depot's mission in 2017.
"Not only does this grant support the depot and museum financially, it also hallmarks the importance of the depot to the Saluda community, its heritage, and as a tourist destination," says Judy Ward, chair of the Saluda Historic Depot board.
"Since this is a challenge grant, we will continue our outreach to raise funds for the museum from Saluda citizens and ongoing fundrasiers," says treasurer, Bruce Hunt.
"We know that all Saludians will celebrate this grant opportunity with us and help us to reach our mission. The depot is becoming a cornerstone to Saluda's past and a repository for its railroad history. It is becoming a place in which all Saludians can call "their own," says Cathy Jackson.
Horizon Heating Donates to Historic Depot
When Judy Thompson got a notice with her bill that Horizon Heating and Air Conditioning has a Charitable Giving Program to demonstrate its commitment to the communities it serves, she immediately thought of the Saluda Historic Saluda. Judy quickly arranged for an application to be submitted so that Saluda's depot could be considered for a gift. In partnership with the Community Foundation of Henderson County, Horizon makes gifts each year to deserving charitable organizations in the Henderson and Polk county area. Horizon's commitment is to distribute one per month to local non-profits. The gifts are usually $500 or $1,000 and the Saluda Historic Depot is to receive a $1,000 donation this month.
Judy uses Horizon to provide twice a year preventive maintenance to two rental houses in Hendersonville as well as her home here in Saluda. She can't say enough about Horizon's excellent service and fair pricing and now she calls this donation evidence of their community give-back as "icing on the cake."
"We appreciate Judy Thompson thinking of the fund raising efforts to pay our mortgage on the purchase of the depot and operating expenses to maintain the Saluda Historic Depot, and the gracious generosity of Horizon Heating to award us this grant," says Judy Ward, chair of the Saluda Historic Depot.

Volunteers Needed!
We need volunteers for 2 hours per week, Thursday to Sunday from 12 to 4. This is the best way to learn the history of Saluda and meet people from all over the world. Saluda has become a destination and over the past 18 months we have had over 3000 visitors at the Depot. It is so rewarding to meet the visitors that come to Saluda who want to know about the trains that once climbed the grade. The best thing you can do for yourself and your community is to help us at the depot. We invite stay-at-home Moms and Dads, teenage students, and new people to our area to please consider volunteering and learning more about your home town and to become part of the Saluda Historic Depot & Museum.

Dear Friends of the Saluda Senior Center,
As the holiday season approaches, the time has come to give thanks for our many blessings and look forward with plans for the upcoming new year. With that in mind, throughout the past 25 years, our mission at the Center has been to enhance the quality of life for all citizens of Saluda by providing programs and activities promoting wellness, education, personal fulfillment, socializing, and community involvement. The Center is a nonprofit organization that receives no tax dollars to operate our facility, so it is only through the profits of the Thrifty Barn and Basement and donations from generous folks like you that the Center is able to continue with our mission. This year, our mission expanded to include the SLIP Program (Saluda Living in Place) a new concept which is aimed at helping seniors stay in their own homes as they age.
The current Board of Directors continues to have big shoes to fill -previous Board members and countless volunteers have made the Center a reality and a vital part of Saluda. Not only is our job to keep the Center going, but to expand and improve our programs, activities and facilities to better serve the needs of Saluda.
Even though we are proud of our past accomplishments, we face continuing financial issues. This year, we had to replace both the dishwasher and refrigerator, and continue to experience leaks in the water line between the Center and Thrifty Barn. Additionally, we need to address the following issues:
- New chairs
- Upgrading and maintaining computers for public use
- Funding for ongoing activities
- General day-to-day operating expenses of the Center, Thrifty Barn and Basement
- Replacing air conditioning system in main room.
- Replacing water line between the Center and Thrifty Barn and repave parking lot.
Currently, we need to raise $17,000 annually just to keep the doors open!
So How Can You Help Us?
- Get involved! VOLUNTEER!
- A gift of your time and talents is priceless.
- Donate your gently used clothing and household items
- Tell us if you or a neighbor would like to participate in the Meals on Wheels program-we have eat-in or delivered meals
- Donate to us in lieu of the IRS! No amount is too large or too small.
- Rent the Center facilities for your next party, reception, reunion, etc.
- Come celebrate the holiday season with us at our Annual Christmas Gala on Saturday, December 10, 6:00-8:00pm at the Saluda Senior Center ($40 a person, reservations required),
Donations from private individuals are important and vital to the Center. Each year we reach out to the community for assistance in continuing our operations. All of the donations we receive are dedicated solely to the day-to-day operation of the Center, unless otherwise specified by the donor. The money needed to support activities, improvements and day-to-day expenses comes from the Thrifty Barn and Basement sales, grants and gifts from private individuals. We receive no funding from the United Way drive or taxpayer dollars.

Saluda Community Land Trust is hosting a wreath making day at Twin Lakes
complete with lunch from 11am to 3p
m, December 3.
The event is sponsored by a grant from the Polk County Community Foundation. This will be a fun day for children and adults. Please come join us!
Bring hand clippers if you have them and dress warmly if it's a bit cold. You may want to bring a blanket to sit upon while working on your wreath. If it is below 45 degrees (or raining) at 11am, we'll meet at the (heated) Fellowship Hall of the Saluda Presbyterian Church.
Endowment
Time is running out to be a founding member!
In March, 19 members of Saluda Community Land Trust (SCLT) met at the Polk County Community Foundation (PCCF) to forge the terms of the agreement to form an endowment which would be used to sustain SCLT into the future. The group agreed that income generated from the endowment would be used to preserve and maintain trails and properties that SCLT owns or leases. This ensures that future generations will have access to nature and open spaces and the means to keep the vision of this group alive.

As I write, it's Thanksgiving Day. By the time this hits the press it will be past. "Thanksgiving day," as in "a day for giving thanks."
What if "Thanks" and "Giving" could be our guide for the season: A day of thanks followed by days to find ways of giving?
Let's unpack this concept with a little "Awareness Through Movement" activity (a mini-ATM):
1. Take three normal breaths; inhale, exhale, repeat.
2. After the third exhale, hold your breath ALAP.
3. Finally, allow yourself to inhale again.
4. Notice how the air comes in: Usually it's automatic, effortless.
5. Now breathe out. Fully. You might notice this takes a bit more effort than inhaling. Exhaling completely is just as necessary for our health.
6. Place your hands on your stomach, palms and fingers spreading from your lower ribs to below the navel.
7. Feel what happens as you breathe: The ribs and belly can expand as you breathe in, contract as you breathe out. You can encourage this movement of receiving and letting go.
8. Finally, take another deep breath: As you inhale, think "Thanks." As you exhale, think "Giving"

Each Christmas season, our school sponsors a Christmas Bazaar in the gym where children may purchase up to 5 gifts for family members and/or friends.
We are asking for donations of small gift items, such as coffee mugs, inexpensive jewelry, knick-knacks, etc. We also need gift bags, wrapping paper and clear tape for the wrapping station. You may leave your donations in the secretary's office anytime between November 29 and December 13.

Saluda for the Holidays

 During this holiday season most people visualize a warm and friendly place to go to enjoy the season. Perry Como may have been singing about Saluda in his song, "
Oh, there's no place like home for the holidays 'Cause no matter how far away you roam, when you pine for the sunshine of a friendly gaze. For the holidays you can't beat home, sweet home."
Many Saluda summer folks, guests, and visitors make Saluda their home for the holidays. Perry Como and his wife, Roselle, found peace and quiet in Saluda, escaping from his celebrity life to the welcoming arms of the people of Saluda who protected his privacy and treated him like one of them.
With its historic downtown district decked out in wintry decorations of garland and evergreens, holiday lights, local holiday shopping, seasonally inspired menus in the restaurants, and less commercialization, Saluda feels like stepping back in time when sharing love and kindness was the reason for the season.
This is evidenced in town when you see the friendly smile of the Santa bell ringer with the red kettle in front of M.A. Pace General Store, Christmas ornaments for sale at Heartwood Gallery whose proceeds go to the Thermal Belt Outreach Ministry, children's toys collected at City Hall for children in need, local work from artists at the Saluda Historic Depot whose proceeds go toward this community museum, and sandwich boards in front of the eateries with their seasonal specials.
Saluda is a place that when you come here it feels like "going home."

The Dancer's Extension
The dancers will be performing during Hometown Christmas above Ward's Grill from 6-7pm. We're very grateful to Judy Ward for her graciousness in providing the space to entertain the community for the holidays.

Jim Carson will offer a workshop, titled "Painting in the Studio/ Brushwork Boot Camp", on Thursday-Saturday, January 26-28, 2017. This indoor painting workshop provides a good learning and teaching environment for students to grasp the basic fundamentals of contemporary impressionist painting.
There will be an emphasis on values, temperature, and design, as well as bold and spontaneous brushwork.

The Saluda HIstoric Depot is pleased to announce the annual Saluda Holiday Gallery to open November 5 and run through December. Artists and craftspeople will exhibit and sell their work just in time for the holidays. The gallery will be open during museum hours, Thursday through Sunday, noon to 4pm.  Meanwhile, Back in Saluda
: We sewed aprons, tote bags and mug rugs using up vintage fabrics! It started out simple enough (as many of our better projects do) with cleaning out the sewing room. A set of Grandma's kitchen curtains were found and, when held up to the light, someone exclaims "That would make an interesting apron!" and off we were to the sewing machines! Aprons were made using vintage curtains, an aged table cloth, upholstery fabrics and vintage designer pillow cases! Dozens of aprons later (not kidding), it was decided the aprons and other newly created fabric arts needed new homes. Stop by our shop and take a look at these unique, hand sewn, locally made, useful and resourceful (and a Partridge in a Pear Tree) aprons and other fiber arts. These will make a great gift!
"On Our Front Porch"
(our 27 year old service project located on the property at Meanwhile, Back in Saluda) is collecting used towels, sheets, blankets and pillow cases to be sewn into dog/cat mats and donated to the Vet and Pet Shelter. If you have any such things you no longer need, drop them off "On Our Front Porch" at Meanwhile's Shop (171 East Main Street next door to the bakery).
Water!
With the drought continuing and predicted to continue for months, remember to be frugal with water! Check on neighbors who rely on springs and wells for water. Especially check on elderly neighbors who might need help getting drinking water if their springs are low. Remember the Burn Ban! No fireworks, campfires or trash burning outside unless the burn ban is lifted. If you see someone wasting water or burning outside, gently remind them of the drought and burn ban. Stay safe and help neighbors!

On December 16 and 17, we will have Santa visit us before he is too busy. 10:30am- 2pm and 5pm to 7pm on the 16th and 10:30am-2:30pm on the 17th.

We don't know what happened to the last 11 months but are in total disbelief that the holidays are already upon us and we'll be decorating our magnificent 10' Christmas tree in 2 days, and the Inn will be a splendor once again.

Pearson's Falls will be closed for trail maintenance from Monday through Friday during the first three weeks in December. Pearson's Falls will be open on Saturdays and Sundays in December and all week Monday Dec. 26 through Saturday Dec. 31. The hours are 10 AM - 5 PM. The Falls will be closed Dec. 25 Christmas Day.  There is a house on a hill in downtown Saluda that was once a church, and Corinne Gerwe has made it her home for more than two decades and, more recently, a place to write murder mysteries.
Corinne and husband David had a mountain cabin in Pisgah Forest near Brevard, but in 1991, David suggests the couple find a place less remote. "He said he worried that if something happened to him, I would be stuck out there by myself at the cabin." Little did they know how prophetic his words would be.
"We started looking around," Corinne said, "and we began coming to Saluda. David said, 'I think you're going to like this little town'"They continued looking at Saluda properties but couldn't find the right one. "Then the real estate agent showed me the old church.
"It was in pretty bad shape," Corinne remembered, "but I was drawn to it and really wanted to save it." The couple's project began with cleaning up after termites, renovating, and updating the structure which dated back to 1888. The congregation of Saluda's First Baptist Church had long since left the old sanctuary for a new one just down the hill on Henderson Street where its members still worship today.
Life took a tragic turn for Corinne and David when he died in an automobile accident in 2001. "I was devastated," she said, and in an effort to deal with the loss, she took a job that took her far from Saluda in the Urals, a remote mountain range in Russia. "The only thing above the place I went was the North Pole," Corinne said. Drugs and AIDS were ravaging the youth and young work force in the region's mining industry, she explained. With a doctorate in psychology, extensive medical training and research experience in neuropsychology, Corrine was selected to set up clinics and hire staff to deal with the problem. She made more than a dozen trips to Russia between 2001 and 2010.
"Each time I came back to Saluda from the Urals," she said," I had an even greater appreciation for our little town. We're all so lucky to be living here, and I want the people in Saluda to know how much they mean to me."
Now, with her years of teaching, research and consulting behind her, Corinne has turned to writing with two murder mysteries now in print, along with a work of non-fiction. Her new novel, published this year, is Murder in a Moonlit Mason Jar. Her work is available in shops in Saluda as well as the Saluda Library. "My little town in my latest book is based on Saluda, Corinne said. "My books really reflect the people and the region around me."
Corinne is also a dedicated volunteer at A Thrifty Barn in Saluda as well as and with the project to save the Saluda Historic Depot.

A Soldier's Story
The cold wind blew an occasional snowflake across the gray hills of Fort Jackson firing range. It was December 24, 1951; the news from the Korean front had not been good. The war was in its 181 month with high casualties. We knew that we were to be replacements and were being rushed through our sixteen weeks of basic training.
We were A Company, heavy weapons infantry. We were two hundred men in their fourteenth week of training. No passes were being issued since we would be going home on leave in two weeks, for 10 days before we shipped overseas. The whistle blew and we rushed to our gun positions to begin afternoon firing. A black soldier tripped and fell in front of one of the instructors. Hey soldier! What's your name? Picking himself up and standing at ridged attention, as we had been taught. Pvt. Harry Hilliary, Sir, A Company 43rd Infantry Sir. Where ·is your mind today soldier? Can't you pick up your big feet? My mind is home, Sir, he said in a stuttering voice. Home! Why do you want to be home soldier? Because it's Christmas, Sir. Christmas! Who do you know that would want to see you? You got a girl friend Pvt. Hilliary? No Sir only my Mother, Sir. Well I've heard it all. You want to go home to see your Mother. I'll tell you what Pvt. Hilliary, you come up here to the microphone and sing us a Christmas song and we'll dedicate it to your Mother. I'll do it Sir but can I have some of my buddies to help me. O.K. call them but make it quick. Soon five young soldiers were standing behind the mike.
They started humming and Harry began to sing, "I'm Dreaming of a White Christmas." When the song ended, applause was heard all down the ranks with shouts of sing another one, Hilliary. Want me to sing one more Sir? Sure go on Pvt. Sing us another. He sang, "I Want Be Home for Christmas," every one became very quiet, each lost in his own thoughts for many this would be their last Christmas on earth. I felt tears rolling down my cheeks but I was not ashamed, as I looked around, many others were wiping their eyes also. I want to sing one for my Mother, Sir. He began singing "Silent Night" with tears running down his cheeks. We all joined in and the cold winter hills of Fort Jackson firing range rang with two hundred trainee voices joined together with the feeling and true meaning of Christmas.
The mood of the whole company changed. Even the training officers didn't yell or harass the troops for the remainder of the day. Pvt. Harry Hilliary who sang as if he had the voice of an angel had touched the hearts of us all and brought some joy and peace to his fellow man on Christmas Eve.
We finished training in two weeks and we shipped out with orders for Korea. I never saw Harry again, but each Christmas season, I still think of him and the songs he sang and hope that he like myself was one of the lucky ones and that he had many Christmases to spend with his Mother.
