November/December 2012
Man Against Domestic Violence
Greetings Supporters:

As we head into the last stretch of 2012, I want everyone to know how much I truly appreciate your kindness, encouraging words, collaborations & overall support. And, while we've seen some extreme tragedies this year, some of them ending in death, I am pleased to see so many businesses, organizations, youth groups & men working individually and collectively towards awareness and change.

The media has certainly been helpful with spreading the word about the various events. Special thanks to Tri-State Defender, Silver Star, Commercial Appeal, Linchub, Self Improvement Broadcast (Channel 17), ABC 24 & Stormy Taylor of WDIA/V101.

A Product of Resiliency

In addition to supporting and hosting various events around the city, I'm always humbled by the opportunities given to serve as a speaker, presenter & facilitator. It is imperative that we share with others how to not only survive, but also, how to thrive.

Among the most recent are the following: UTHSC Shelby Co. Relative  Caregiver Program; Girls Night Out- Whitehaven Library; Mt Pisgah MB Church-Womens Conference, the Epsilon Epsilon chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha  Sorority Inc-Founders Week. United Way of the Mid South and Kamekio Lewis' venue for her hit stage play "Looking 4 Love In All the Wrong Places, provided me with opportunities to set up vendor space to share information and helpful resources regarding domestic violence education.

Men of Honor

WIANL hosted the 3rd Annual Mens Brunch for Domestic Violence Advocacy on November 3rd. Honorees included Dr. Todd Motley  (pictured), Mr. Jason Kyles, Colonel Mike Ryall, Pastor Ricky Floyd & Pastor Earle Fisher, with a thought provoking keynote address given by Minister Joe "Uncle Joe" Hunter.

The purpose of this event is to bring attention to the positive role men serve regarding domestic violence.  Facilitated by Mr. Kevin Phipps, the well attended brunch provided a forum of information and resources available for male & female victims/survivors, as well as the launch to aggressively address the need for more encouragement/assistance for male victims.

Longtime community supporters of this event include United Healthcare, The Circle of Inspiration &  Successful Single Moms Memphis, with special guests Congressman Steve Cohen & State Rep. G.A. Hardaway.

Mission Statement

The mission of Walking Into A New Life is to stop domestic violence and help stabilize victims. Through proper education and tangible resources, the road to self sufficiency can be both acquired and maintained. I am both an advocate & survivor, trained professionally and Nationally credentialed as a domestic violence advocate. However, it is my years of victim turned survivor that gives me added insight on why victims stay, what encourages them to leave, and most of all, what drives them to become self sufficient and holistically sound.

To learn more about WIANL and/or requests regarding speaking engagements, presentations, upcoming events, collaborations, etc...please visit the website's contact page. Together, change is not only possible, it is inevitable.

Sincerely,

Joyce Parkinson
