Happy Labor Day!

Labor Day traditionally takes place on the first Monday in September. This year, the holiday falls on September 6. On Labor Day, we pay tribute to the contributions and achievements of American workers. The occasion was created by the labor movement in response to arduous working hours and unsafe and unsanitary working conditions born out of the industrial revolution.

In response to these conditions, labor unions started organizing strikes and rallies as a form of protest to compel employers to meet their needs. Some of the protests turned into traditions, and that is how the holiday was born. Labor Day was first celebrated in the late 19th century and became a federal holiday in 1894[1].

As we celebrate today, let us remember the labor movement, which ensured opportunity and equality for the oppressed.[2] Although we have come a long way, there is still work that needs to be done in order for workers to receive the security, safety and benefits they deserve. As we continue to champion issues like fair labor standards and paid family leave, we must remember the heroes of the labor movement.

Thank you for your hard work all year! Be proud of all you have accomplished as you enjoy the day.
