In an effort to provide you with more information about club processes, league information, upcoming deadlines, etc., we will be sending out a Coach & Team Manager Newsletter approximately two times per month. These newsletters will serve as the main form of communication between the club and the coaches/managers.

In these newsletters, you will see three main sections highlighted in orange: Coaches & Team Managers, Coaches, and Team Managers. Those main sections are further broken down into subsections highlighted in blue: All Groups, HP, Academy, Travel, etc. (HP=Navy, Orange, and White teams, Academy=Steel and Grey teams, Travel=Red, Crimson, and Scarlet teams).

These newsletters will also be posted on our website here.

OUTDOOR PRACTICE SCHEDULING
You can now access bookafield to schedule your outdoor practices for the spring and summer. Please note that the link to bookafield for scheduling outdoor practices has changed. Access bookafield here. Instructions on how to schedule a practice in bookafield can be found here.

Our first day outdoors is still anticipated to be Monday, April 29. All teams are expected to use their indoor time through the end of April. The cost of this space has been included in player registration fees and should not be dropped. No refunds will be given for dropped space.

Teams will be expected to keep their bookafield schedule updated as their schedule changes throughout the season. Teams will be able to add and drop sessions directly in bookafield. Failure to maintain your bookafield schedule may result in your scheduling privileges being revoked.

Salvo Soccer Club reserves the right to adjust practice schedules as needed to maximize field usage.

QUESTIONS?
All outdoor scheduling/bookafield questions should be directed towards:

WEATHER POLICY
In the event of severe weather (thunderstorm, winter storm, etc.), Salvo SC will make weather-related adjustments by 3:30 pm Fall, Winter, Spring, and Summer.
Communication about these adjustments will be sent through email, posted on our website, and posted on our social media pages.

Minnesota weather can be unpredictable. At times, a coach or referee may need to determine if it is safe for our players to practice or play a game. Please review our weather policy here and use it as a guideline to determine whether a practice should be canceled.

Weather Bug and OSHA-NIOSH Heat Index are the two apps we refer to for weather information. You can download these apps to your phone using the links below:

COACHING ACTIONS
As a coach how do you teach? It starts long before we hit the field with a detailed plan that lays out our 5 W’s for the session (What, Where, Who, When, Why). Now that you have established the plan, you have to evaluate your activities. Are your activities built to meet the expectations of being organized, game-like, repetitive, presenting the proper challenge, and providing you the opportunity to coach?

The table is set to achieve our session's goal because of organization. Now it is time to help our players learn. To do this, we have to look at our behavior.

Our options to help change player behavior include the following actions:
  • Check-Adapt
  • Give positive reinforcement
  • Use of key words
  • Ask questions (and collect answers)
  • Demonstrate
  • Give feedback
  • Command
  • Apply the learning circle

CHECK - ADAPT
  • Ongoing
  • Observe and check the created situation on the field, adapt if necessary based on the Five Elements of a Training Activity

GIVE POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT
  • Reinforce effective actions to use it again in similar situations
  • Motivate players

USE OF KEY WORDS
  • Encourage and support players to focus on cues and/or desired behavior

ASK QUESTIONS (and collect answers)
  • Use guided questions to force players to think about cues and/or desired behavior
  • Check for understanding
  • Reflect

DEMONSTRATE (player and/or coach)
  • Model desired behavior - show and tell - include the ball and movement of players
  • Visualize the situation - recreate the picture, rehearse a solution, restart play
  • Check for understanding - show me

GIVE FEEDBACK
  • Collect information on players’ behavior related to the objective of the activity

COMMAND
  • Tell players what to do

APPLY THE LEARNING CIRCLE (as a concept)
  • Use a combination of coaching observation and player reflection to get players thinking about and/or modeling the desired behavior and applying their newly learned abilities
  • Experience – Reflect – Develop – Application

Our ability to time when we interrupt play to teach requires that we recognize the needs of the player. Remember when we think about our players first in sessions, it requires we are even more clear, concise, and planned so that they not only learn but have fun.

Playing in Your Community

Salvo Soccer Club’s merger has provided our players with the opportunity to play with athletes across many geographical areas. We have seen our High Performance (Navy, Orange, and White) teams excel, but we have also seen the Academy (Steel and Grey) and Travel (Red, Crimson, and Scarlet) teams prosper.

During the merger of REV Soccer Club and Woodbury Soccer Club, it was easy to see how this merger benefited the High Performance teams, but many were wondering how it would positively impact the Academy and Travel teams in the Central, East, and South.  Read more...
