From the Editor's Desk

Dear Devotees,

Janmashtami is fast approaching, and we look forward to celebrating this sublime occasion with you. JKYog & Radha Krishna Temple of Dallas developed an online family camp (Aug4th- 10th) followed by Janmashtami Mahotsav spread over two days, from August 11th - 12th on a virtual platform. We extend a hearty welcome to the spiritual, online, global experience & Janmashtami celebrations!

Five thousand years ago, the Supreme Lord descended in Mathura in the captivating form of Shree Krishna. Mother Yashoda was blessed to feed Him, bathe Him, and rock Him to sleep. The Purushotham (Supreme Divine Personality,) who measured the three worlds with three steps in Vamana avatar, allowed Yashoda to teach him how to walk. The Sarvavyāpak (All Pervading Lord) allowed her to bind him to a grinding mortar with a rope!

Why does He perform such leelas (pastimes), or for that matter, why does He descend?
Reason Behind God's Pastimes on Earth

God's leelas are divine; therefore, they are beyond the comprehension of our material intellect. If we could know and understand everything there is to know about God, then there wouldn't be any difference between Him and us. We cannot hope to know the specific reasons behind His each and every pastime, but our scriptures repeatedly proclaim that any pastime of God during any of his descensions was for the welfare of the souls:

भवेऽस्मिन्क्लिश्यमानानामविद्याकामकर्मभिः
श्रवणस्मरणार्हाणि करिष्यन्निति केचन
bhave'sminkliśyamānānāmavidyākāmakarmabhiḥ
ṣravaṇasmaraṇāhāṇi kariṣyanniti kechana (Bhagavatam - 1.8.35)
"You descend for the welfare of the suffering souls, giving them a chance to relish the sweetness of devotion by hearing, remembering, and worshiping you."

It is our love for God that "opens the door to the impossible and makes way for the inaccessible," says H. H. Swami Mukundananda ji. When Shree Krishna descended, He bestowed upon us that rare opportunity to fill our heart and mind with that selfless love.  Out of His causeless mercy and benevolence, He descends in His loving form to nurture love in our hearts. He makes one soul his father, another mother, and another friend, yet another servant or beloved. Hiding His almightiness and bound by   the love of these blessed souls, He displays amazing leelas, which become a basis for our bhakti (devotion).

When we con template on Shree Krishna's glorious names, splendid form, sublime virtues, and delightful pastimes, the joy we attain is boundless. Why is that so? It is because He is an ocean of infinite bliss, and we souls are his tiny parts. Therefore, we are naturally drawn to this bliss, as everything is madhuram (sweet) about the Madhuradhi Pati, the Supreme Lord of Sweetness!

Wellness for Life - The Magic Elixir of Tulasi

Mother Earth provides many plants and herbs that have medicinal properties. Our scriptures indicate how advanced our Vriksha Sastra (Botany or the plant science) was when we hear about the Sanjeevani herb that helped Lakshman regain his consciousness.
One of such medicinally valuable plant is Tulasi. There is a reason why almost every home in India has a Tulasi plant in the courtyard. Every time we go to any temple, the priest while giving us the Tulasi teertham (तीर्थम) says:

सर्व व्याधि निवारणम
sarva vyādhi nivāraṇam
"Let all illnesses be prevented"

This fragrant herbal plant certainly does aid in preventing and curing several ailments:
  • Chewing a few leaves brings relief to cough and sore throat.
  • Taking the decoction of leaves with honey and ginger relieves bronchitis, asthma, influenza, and cold.
  • In case of acute fever, a decoction of the leaves boiled with cardamom powder in water, mixed with sugar and milk, brings down the temperature.
  • Tulasi supports digestive system and prevents bloating. It also helps people suffering from vomiting and lack of appetite.
  • Tulasi leaves contain anti-bacterial and anti-fungal compounds. Applying a paste made of Tulasi leaves along with sandalwood paste and rose water prevents skin inflammation.
  • Tulasi is also used in the treatment of ulcers, cuts, and wounds because of its beneficial antiseptic and healing properties.
  • Rubbing Tulasi leaves on areas that itch gives quick relief.
  • Adding a few leaves to hot water and inhaling the vapor clears up the sinuses.
Besides, Tulasi aids in purification of atmosphere. It gives out oxygen for 20 hours and ozone for 4 hours, along with the formation of nascent oxygen, which absorbs harmful gases like carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and Sulphur dioxide from the environment. It is also a good germicidal agent and a disinfectant that protects the human body from all types of viral infections.

Try to grow Tulasi plant on a window ledge or porch, which helps us and our surroundings too. Chew a few raw leaves regularly to reap the benefits.
