Samuel Ryder Academy
Issue: 64 Date: 25 May 2018

Dear Parents and Carers

In what has been a busy and exciting half-term, this week has certainly ended on a high note, with two wonderful evenings of entertainment.

On Wednesday, the dancers took to the stage and executed a series of beautifully choreographed performances to a large audience in the school hall.  The standard of dancing was extremely high and it was great to see so many students involved.  This was the last dance showcase before Ms Demain goes on maternity leave so we wish her well and I know the students will miss her.

On Thursday it was the turn of the musicians and they were equally fabulous.  The evening was arranged and organised by Year 9 students to raise money to purchase a new drum kit for the music department.  Once again, the quality was fabulous and included students in primary and secondary performing on stage to a full house.  Well done to all involved and thank you to Mr Bradbury and Mr Fothergill for their support and guidance.

Update across Primary

Book Week:

We have thoroughly enjoyed our Book Week.  The Scholastic Book Fair was a huge success with many children purchasing a selection of fantastic, inspiring and entertaining books.

Throughout the week, the children experienced many different activities based on our theme of Shakespeare.  The children in Key Stage 1 were treated to an amazing storyteller who retold A Midsummer Night’s Dream (A Fairy Thorn) and The Tempest (Shipwrecked!) through song and drama.  In Key Stage 2, the children participated in a guided improvisation of The Tempest with Professor Pango Mango, a visiting poet and master storyteller.

On Friday, the children delighted us all by dressing up as their favourite book character and participating in a ‘Story Tour Carousel’.

Congratulations to the following winners of our illustration competition:

Key Stage 1:

Daniel Howley – Green Class

Arabella Schenk – Purple Class (runner up)

Key Stage 2:

Sam Gregory – Durham

Tyler Orchard – Imperial (runner up)

A big thank you to everyone who helped to make this such an enjoyable week.

Royal Extravaganza:

Last Friday 18th July we enjoyed our ‘Royal Extravaganza’ that the PTA very kindly funded for us.  We would like to thank the PTA for supporting these events and helping us to deliver an inspiring, fun curriculum.

In one activity, we learned to sing the National Anthem and participated in a handwriting competition. The competition was based on both effort and presentation.  The winners received a prize in today’s celebration assembly.  They were as follows:

Purple Class: Isabelle Chan

Orange Class: Olivia Williams

Yellow Class: Elodie Green

Green Class: Luke O’Donovan

York: Riley Scott

Bath: Derin Akintoye

Durham: Michael Anjos

Warwick: Phoebe Holt

Imperial: Olga Kolowrocka

St. Andrews: Izhan Tafajoul

Throughout the day, Children also had the opportunity to play some traditional British games and followed instructions to learn to play marbles, hopscotch, Pin the Tail on the Corgi and also had lots of fun on the bouncy castle!  In the British sports session, children experienced learning to play cricket and croquet.  We also created clay tiles as a memory of the event and designed congratulatory cards to send to the happy couple. A card from each year group will be mailed from the school.  We also learned about British values and designed some posters that will be displayed around the school.

We hope you have a lovely half term,

Ms Shirazi and Miss Wood

Every fortnight, the class with the best or most improved attendance will receive our ‘Attendance Stars’ trophy and receive 10 minutes extra Golden Time as a reward.

The winning class this fortnight was York Class with 98.9%.

Lollipop Lady

We have been informed by the Active and Safe Travel Team that our Lollipop lady will not be at school for two weeks from Tuesday 5th June for 2 weeks, due to health reasons. Please take extra care when crossing the road.

EYFS

Our learning this week in EYFS

For book week, we used the story ‘Midsummer Night’s Dream.’ We have designed our own magic potions and used our designs to write simple instructions.

We have made our own wands, designed head dresses, made dream catchers and in groups we made fairy gardens.

We enjoyed listening to the storyteller retell ‘The Fairy Thorn’ story.

Year Group Dates/Reminders:

Class Assembly for Red Class – 22nd June

Class Assembly for Blue Class – 29th June

Please can you ensure that all children bring a labelled hat into school on a daily basis from now on.

We would also like to remind you that lip balm is not permitted in Reception due to Health and Safety reasons.

YEAR ONE

Our Learning this Week

Last week was certainly not our typical week. Not only did the children go on a short trip to Colney Heath train tracks but they also enjoyed a full day of fabulous activities to celebrate the royal wedding. Hopefully the children have made great memories.

This week has been equally exciting with the much awaited SRA Book Week taking place. The theme of this year’s Book Week has been Shakespeare. The children enjoyed the launch assembly on Monday when they were introduced to the life and work of Shakespeare. They had fun doing paired reading with their Y3 peers. On Tuesday, the children participated in an interactive story telling workshop by Emily Hanna, when they familiarized themselves with the play ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream.’ Throughout the week, the children have been given lots of opportunities to engage in role play. Budding actors and actresses were aplenty! The week finished with a story tour carousel. The children enjoyed going to other classrooms to complete fun guided reading activities.

In Maths, we have been learning about properties of 3D shapes and symmetry in 2D shapes. Regarding  3D shapes, they have been counting the amount of faces, edges and vertices on each shape. An example  they have found is that cubes have 6 faces, 12 edges and 8 vertices. With 2D shapes they have been able to explain what symmetry is. They found it can occur in nature, such as with butterflies or even faces of cats, as well as in shapes. They have been folding shapes of paper, making sure it is exactly the same  either side, to see if there is any symmetry. We discovered some shapes have more than 1 line of symmetry, such as a square.

In Science, we have been describing and comparing the structure of a variety of common animals.

Preparation for next week:

Please note that the library books have been collected and returned to the library (Purple Class only). Children will have an opportunity to choose a new book on their usual day, in the first week of the new half term.

We have kept children’s Homework Books at school and sent home phonics practise sheets instead.

Year Group Dates/Reminders:

12th July 2018                     Year One outing to Southend-on-Sea (whole day)

8th June 2018                      Swimming starts (continues until the end of term). Children will need swimming costumes, swimming hats and towels. Goggles are recommended but not compulsory.

YEAR TWO

Our learning this week:

SATs were completed this week, Mrs Hayes and Miss Hennessey are very proud of all of the children. They all worked very hard and gave of their very best.  During the times when the children were not completing the SATs papers, they have been with Mrs Davey and Mrs Johns completing activities focusing on Shakespeare as it is Book Week. This website contains some short videos that you may like to share about William Shakespeare and some of his plays.

http://learnenglishkids.britishcouncil.org/en/short-stories/william-shakespeare

We have also continued to listen to the songs for our production ‘Tuishi Pamoja’, the songs are incredibly catchy and the children are picking them up well. The words to the songs have been sent home today for you and your child to practice during the holidays.

On Monday, the children had an opportunity to share a book with either a Reception child or a Year 4 child. Mrs Davey and Mrs Johns commented that some of the children were like mini teachers.

On Tuesday, the children thoroughly enjoyed their visit from Emily. She told the story ‘Shipwrecked’, which was an interactive storytelling session based on The Tempest.

YEAR THREE

Our learning this week:

In Maths the children completed two tests.  The following day we went through the answers to the questions that the children found tricky.  The children had to use the space provided to show their working out to answer the questions.  All of the questions were based around the learning we have done this half term.

In Literacy we have been learning the story ‘The Tempest’ by William Shakespeare.  First we read the children’s book and then we had a go at creating our own magic spells.  On Thursday, we used wax effect to create excellent watercolour paintings of the stormy seas where the Tempest is set.  Thursday also welcomed Professor Mango Pango to Samuel Ryder, where he acted out a version of The Tempest for Year 3.

On Friday, the children enjoyed another dress up day as their favourite book character!  Thank you to all parents who supported this by making or buying a costume for their child!  A wonderful way to end this half term.

Well done to all of Year 3 for a fantastic half term!  Enjoy a relaxing week off and we look forward to seeing you all back on Monday 4th June.

Reminders:

Mini Water bottles!

Next half term we will be making our own volcano models. Over the half term, please find a small (33cl) empty water bottle to use as the inside of a volcano and bring it in. Please do not start making your model at home, as we will be doing this in class, step by step together! If you have any spares for other children, please send them in too! Thank you.

YEAR FOUR

It has been a fantastic week in Year 4 and we have all absolutely loved exploring the life and works of William Shakespeare as part of our Book Week. We started the week off by reading to the Year 2 classes and it was lovely to help the younger children read their books. Then we became film critics, writing a review of our favourite Shakespeare play out of: A Midnight Summer’s Dream, The Tempest and Twelfth Night. The Shakespeare short animations really helped us understand the plays and they had really catchy music too! Later in the week we tried our hand at acting out key scenes from Shakespeare’s play and were even visited by a Shakespeare acting company where we acted out parts from ‘The Tempest’. Our fun-filled book week was topped off by our dress up day on Friday – Year 4’s costumes were fantastic!

We hope you all have a lovely half term break

YEAR FIVE

Our Learning this week:

In Maths, the children have been calculating percentages of different amounts and quantities.  They have used this knowledge to calculate percentage decreases for sale items.  They have discussed discounts, reductions and VAT, enabling them to make mathematical links to real life situations.

In English, we have explored different Shakespearean plays, including participating in a workshop based on The Tempest.  We have discussed different characters, themes and settings and we have been impressed with the enthusiasm shown by all of the children.  It has been fantastic to introduce them to William Shakespeare, giving context to some of his great works.

For their topic work, the children have enjoyed sharing their knowledge of the different features of rivers in a variety of ways, including news report style presentations, diagrams and posters.

Ingestre Hall Showcase:

We were extremely proud of the children’s showcase of their work at Ingestre Hall.  They worked hard to prepare which helped them to perform in a confident manner. We hope that you enjoyed sharing their experiences.

Secondary Phase News

End of Year Exam Arrangements

Letters regarding end of year exam arrangements for Years 7,8,9,10 and 12 have been now been sent home with all students.

MFL Week

Last week, SRA students celebrated MFL week with a range of language-related activities. In tutor time, they tested their thinking skills with puzzles in Icelandic, Estonian, Swahili and Basque, and at lunchtimes, they competed in a Dictionary Challenge, games of Pétanque and a pancake-tossing race.

On Monday afternoon, KS3 students were treated to a film showing of the French animation, 'Le TableAu' (The Painting). KS4 French enjoyed 'La Famille Bélier', while those studying KS4 Spanish took part in a Linguistic Olmpiad event in Basque (a regional language of Spain).

What's more, with the help of the PTA we offered an interactive performance of Don Quijote to MASt students in years 8 and 9. Many students volunteered to say lines in Spanish or do battle with the famous knight, impressing us both with their Spanish and acting skills. Muchísimas gracias to the PTA for funding such a fun event!

Sport

Rounders

Well done to the Year 7 Rounders team at their first ever matches this week! We managed to beat St George's but lost to Sir John Lawes. Excellent catching, bowling, fielding and batting demonstrated by all involved!

Year 8 girls played their first rounders match last week, against a very strong STAGS team. Although we didn't win, we gained a lot from the match to take forward into our next match, which is against Sir John Lawes on Tuesday 5th June. There is a rounders tournament on Thursday June 21st. Rounders practice takes place on Monday lunchtime.

Athletics

A huge well done to all of the students who participated in the Athletics at Westminster Lodge over the past 4 weeks. Lots of fantastic performances and progressions throughout.  Athletics training is still ongoing and we need anyone who would like to take part in future athletics events this year to continue to attend training. On Tuesday 19th and Thursday 21st June a selected team of athletes will compete at Westminster Lodge in the District Athletics Championships.

MASt Ocado Trip

On Monday, some of our MASt Y8 and Y9 students attended the launch event for the EDT Go4Set project at the Head Offices of Ocado UK. They will be completing a project to design a new Eco Warehouse which will be pitched to other teams and some of the Ocado employees towards the end of the summer term. This is an exciting opportunity and we look forward to the result of this project.  We hope that this will give them opportunity to see what working on a project will be like with the help of some industry experts.

Here are some comments from the students who attended:

On Monday 21st May, some of the Samuel Ryder students went on a trip to Ocado. There we learnt about STEM and did tasks such building a model out of straws and tape to try and support as much weight as possible. Fortunately, the SRA students won this with some excellent team work exhibited. After this, we went into the warehouse and we were shown how Ocado’s systems work.

We learnt about teamwork, being a strong leader and time management skills. We are now doing projects on self-sustainable buildings and hope to use our newly equipped skills to get the best projects and results that we can. A big thanks to Mr Libberton to taking us on the trip.

Daisy Page

9 Hardy

We had a very pleasant afternoon at the Ocado headquarters where we were greeted by various engineers and staff. Throughout the day, we took part in range of activities; my favourite was when we were able to go into a huge freezer which was -20degrees Celsius, by far the coldest environment I have ever been in.

Artwork of the Week

For Book Week in Art, Year 8 have been illustrating pages from some of their favourite books. We thought you would like to see some of their fantastic designs. Great work Year 8.

Year 7 Anti Bullying initiatives.

The Year 7 Forms have all produced fantastic assemblies in which they performed in front of the entire year group. The topics have ranged from fears about starting secondary school, their talents through to their Year 7 journey. Most recently, 7 King produced a second assembly around the theme of Anti Bullying. They were able to demonstrate their extensive knowledge of the subject and proved that they are truly a bully free form.

Year 7 are currently working on a Bully Free From Status project. They are expanding their knowledge base of different kinds of bullying, reasons why bullying takes place, what to do if you feel you are being bullied or witness bullying and how to tackle bullying. Each form is working extremely hard to collate evidence and produce a presentation which proves they are a Bully Free Form. They will be judged by external members of staff and recieve a badge if they are successful.

UKMT Junior Mathematial Challenge Success

On the back of the success last week, we are delighted to bring news of our Year 7 and Year 8 mathematicians who undertook the prestigious UK Junior Mathematical Challenge on Thursday 26th April. The Junior Mathematical Challenge (organised by the United Kingdom Mathematics Trust) is a national competition aimed at 11-13 year old students. The one-hour competition assesses student’s ability to solve unconventional problems, stretching our most able mathematicians.
