Update across Primary
Book Week:
We have thoroughly enjoyed our Book Week. The Scholastic Book Fair was a huge success with many children purchasing a selection of fantastic, inspiring and entertaining books.
Throughout the week, the children experienced many different activities based on our theme of Shakespeare. The children in Key Stage 1 were treated to an amazing storyteller who retold A Midsummer Night’s Dream (A Fairy Thorn) and The Tempest (Shipwrecked!) through song and drama. In Key Stage 2, the children participated in a guided improvisation of The Tempest with Professor Pango Mango, a visiting poet and master storyteller.
On Friday, the children delighted us all by dressing up as their favourite book character and participating in a ‘Story Tour Carousel’.
Congratulations to the following winners of our illustration competition:
Key Stage 1:
Daniel Howley – Green Class
Arabella Schenk – Purple Class (runner up)
Key Stage 2:
Sam Gregory – Durham
Tyler Orchard – Imperial (runner up)
A big thank you to everyone who helped to make this such an enjoyable week.

Royal Extravaganza:
Last Friday 18th July we enjoyed our ‘Royal Extravaganza’ that the PTA very kindly funded for us. We would like to thank the PTA for supporting these events and helping us to deliver an inspiring, fun curriculum.
In one activity, we learned to sing the National Anthem and participated in a handwriting competition. The competition was based on both effort and presentation. The winners received a prize in today’s celebration assembly. They were as follows:
Purple Class: Isabelle Chan
Orange Class: Olivia Williams
Yellow Class: Elodie Green
Green Class: Luke O’Donovan
York: Riley Scott
Bath: Derin Akintoye
Durham: Michael Anjos
Warwick: Phoebe Holt
Imperial: Olga Kolowrocka
St. Andrews: Izhan Tafajoul
Throughout the day, Children also had the opportunity to play some traditional British games and followed instructions to learn to play marbles, hopscotch, Pin the Tail on the Corgi and also had lots of fun on the bouncy castle! In the British sports session, children experienced learning to play cricket and croquet. We also created clay tiles as a memory of the event and designed congratulatory cards to send to the happy couple. A card from each year group will be mailed from the school. We also learned about British values and designed some posters that will be displayed around the school.
We hope you have a lovely half term,
Ms Shirazi and Miss Wood

Our Stars of the Week:
Attendance Stars:
At SRA, we place great importance on attendance and expect that all our students achieve an attendance level of at least 96% each academic year. It is through good attendance that students can make the most of the opportunities that school has to offer, enabling them to achieve their full potential.
Every fortnight, the class with the best or most improved attendance will receive our ‘Attendance Stars’ trophy and receive 10 minutes extra Golden Time as a reward.
The winning class this fortnight was York Class with 98.9%.
Lollipop Lady
We have been informed by the Active and Safe Travel Team that our Lollipop lady will not be at school for two weeks from Tuesday 5th June for 2 weeks, due to health reasons. Please take extra care when crossing the road.
Sport
On Wednesday 6th June, the Year 2 Primary Sports Festival will be held on our field during the afternoon. Children who will be representing our school have been given letters.

Our learning this week in EYFS
For book week, we used the story ‘Midsummer Night’s Dream.’ We have designed our own magic potions and used our designs to write simple instructions.
We have made our own wands, designed head dresses, made dream catchers and in groups we made fairy gardens.
We enjoyed listening to the storyteller retell ‘The Fairy Thorn’ story.
Year Group Dates/Reminders:
Class Assembly for Red Class – 22nd June
Class Assembly for Blue Class – 29th June
Please can you ensure that all children bring a labelled hat into school on a daily basis from now on.
We would also like to remind you that lip balm is not permitted in Reception due to Health and Safety reasons.
YEAR ONE
Our Learning this Week
Last week was certainly not our typical week. Not only did the children go on a short trip to Colney Heath train tracks but they also enjoyed a full day of fabulous activities to celebrate the royal wedding. Hopefully the children have made great memories.
This week has been equally exciting with the much awaited SRA Book Week taking place. The theme of this year’s Book Week has been Shakespeare. The children enjoyed the launch assembly on Monday when they were introduced to the life and work of Shakespeare. They had fun doing paired reading with their Y3 peers. On Tuesday, the children participated in an interactive story telling workshop by Emily Hanna, when they familiarized themselves with the play ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream.’ Throughout the week, the children have been given lots of opportunities to engage in role play. Budding actors and actresses were aplenty! The week finished with a story tour carousel. The children enjoyed going to other classrooms to complete fun guided reading activities.
In Maths, we have been learning about properties of 3D shapes and symmetry in 2D shapes. Regarding 3D shapes, they have been counting the amount of faces, edges and vertices on each shape. An example they have found is that cubes have 6 faces, 12 edges and 8 vertices. With 2D shapes they have been able to explain what symmetry is. They found it can occur in nature, such as with butterflies or even faces of cats, as well as in shapes. They have been folding shapes of paper, making sure it is exactly the same either side, to see if there is any symmetry. We discovered some shapes have more than 1 line of symmetry, such as a square.
In Science, we have been describing and comparing the structure of a variety of common animals.
Preparation for next week:
Please note that the library books have been collected and returned to the library (Purple Class only). Children will have an opportunity to choose a new book on their usual day, in the first week of the new half term.
We have kept children’s Homework Books at school and sent home phonics practise sheets instead.
Year Group Dates/Reminders:
12th July 2018 Year One outing to Southend-on-Sea (whole day)
8th June 2018 Swimming starts (continues until the end of term). Children will need swimming costumes, swimming hats and towels. Goggles are recommended but not compulsory.
YEAR TWO
Our learning this week:
SATs were completed this week, Mrs Hayes and Miss Hennessey are very proud of all of the children. They all worked very hard and gave of their very best. During the times when the children were not completing the SATs papers, they have been with Mrs Davey and Mrs Johns completing activities focusing on Shakespeare as it is Book Week. This website contains some short videos that you may like to share about William Shakespeare and some of his plays.

We have also continued to listen to the songs for our production ‘Tuishi Pamoja’, the songs are incredibly catchy and the children are picking them up well. The words to the songs have been sent home today for you and your child to practice during the holidays.
On Monday, the children had an opportunity to share a book with either a Reception child or a Year 4 child. Mrs Davey and Mrs Johns commented that some of the children were like mini teachers.
On Tuesday, the children thoroughly enjoyed their visit from Emily. She told the story ‘Shipwrecked’, which was an interactive storytelling session based on The Tempest.
YEAR THREE
Our learning this week:
In Maths the children completed two tests. The following day we went through the answers to the questions that the children found tricky. The children had to use the space provided to show their working out to answer the questions. All of the questions were based around the learning we have done this half term.
In Literacy we have been learning the story ‘The Tempest’ by William Shakespeare. First we read the children’s book and then we had a go at creating our own magic spells. On Thursday, we used wax effect to create excellent watercolour paintings of the stormy seas where the Tempest is set. Thursday also welcomed Professor Mango Pango to Samuel Ryder, where he acted out a version of The Tempest for Year 3.
On Friday, the children enjoyed another dress up day as their favourite book character! Thank you to all parents who supported this by making or buying a costume for their child! A wonderful way to end this half term.
Well done to all of Year 3 for a fantastic half term! Enjoy a relaxing week off and we look forward to seeing you all back on Monday 4th June.
Reminders:
Mini Water bottles!
Next half term we will be making our own volcano models. Over the half term, please find a small (33cl) empty water bottle to use as the inside of a volcano and bring it in. Please do not start making your model at home, as we will be doing this in class, step by step together! If you have any spares for other children, please send them in too! Thank you.
YEAR FOUR
It has been a fantastic week in Year 4 and we have all absolutely loved exploring the life and works of William Shakespeare as part of our Book Week. We started the week off by reading to the Year 2 classes and it was lovely to help the younger children read their books. Then we became film critics, writing a review of our favourite Shakespeare play out of: A Midnight Summer’s Dream, The Tempest and Twelfth Night. The Shakespeare short animations really helped us understand the plays and they had really catchy music too! Later in the week we tried our hand at acting out key scenes from Shakespeare’s play and were even visited by a Shakespeare acting company where we acted out parts from ‘The Tempest’. Our fun-filled book week was topped off by our dress up day on Friday – Year 4’s costumes were fantastic!
We hope you all have a lovely half term break
YEAR FIVE
Our Learning this week:
In Maths, the children have been calculating percentages of different amounts and quantities. They have used this knowledge to calculate percentage decreases for sale items. They have discussed discounts, reductions and VAT, enabling them to make mathematical links to real life situations.
In English, we have explored different Shakespearean plays, including participating in a workshop based on The Tempest. We have discussed different characters, themes and settings and we have been impressed with the enthusiasm shown by all of the children. It has been fantastic to introduce them to William Shakespeare, giving context to some of his great works.
For their topic work, the children have enjoyed sharing their knowledge of the different features of rivers in a variety of ways, including news report style presentations, diagrams and posters.
Ingestre Hall Showcase:
We were extremely proud of the children’s showcase of their work at Ingestre Hall. They worked hard to prepare which helped them to perform in a confident manner. We hope that you enjoyed sharing their experiences.
