Dear animal lover,
The future of lifesaving programs at San Angelo Animal Shelter is at risk. At the next City Council meeting on December 3rd at 8:30 AM, council members will vote on whether to eliminate critical "dog intake diversion" programs. These programs save animal lives by limiting shelter intake to animals that truly need help, allowing staff to focus on providing quality care and offering long-term solutions to the community. Dog intake diversion does not mean dog intake is "closed" but instead allows support alternatives that prevent shelter overcrowding and euthanasia for space. For example, intake diversion allows owners wishing to surrender a pet an opportunity to consider other options such as responsible rehoming assistance programs, training support programs and veterinary support programs. These programs can help keep pets and families together by offering education and supportive care to pet owners or assist in finding a pet a new home without taxing an overburdened shelter.
Without these programs, the shelter will face severe overcrowding, leading to unnecessary euthanasia of healthy, adoptable animals. Eliminating programs like intake diversion will set the shelter back years in progress and return San Angelo to a high-kill community. Our history has shown us that high kill policies do not work!
The senseless euthanasia of adoptable pets will lead to increased stress and burnout for shelter staff who are already working tirelessly to save lives.
We must act now to support our shelter, its lifesaving mission, and our community.
