Connect (or Reconnect) Through The Haybaler Alumni Network
Welcome to the third issue of San Benito High School's monthly, alumni-focused newsletter, which will help you connect or reconnect to SBHS and allow us to share information and about our proud alumni. In addition to receiving the newsletter, there are many ways to stay connected to your alma mater, from attending sporting events and performances on campus to lending your time and expertise to future alumni activities, such as a planned alumni golf tournament, participating in a Spotlight Speaker series during our Academic Focus Time period, helping us plan future alumni activities and events, and following us on Facebook (San Benito High School, Twitter (@BalerNews) or Instagram (@Baler News and @BalerSports). You can also have a direct impact on current students by supporting our Support-A-Student Program (see details in the story below). In the meantime, if you are a Haybaler alum who wants to get involved with our alumni outreach, please click the link below to email district Communications Officer Adam Breen (Class of '87) to let him know how you'd like to help.

16th Annual Baler Fame Fest is March 21
This year's 16th Annual Baler Hall of Fame Fest is on for Saturday, March 21 at San Juan Oaks Golf & Country Club. Congratulations to all the honorees: Shirely Reagan Beall, Jack Maze, Jill Clark-Kunich, Harry Tobias, Karson Klauer and Patrick Schleeter. Every March, the Foundation celebrates with an annual Baler Hall of Fame Fest where it inducts individuals into the Baler Hall of Fame based on community nominations. This luncheon is both a celebration and a fundraiser. Individuals are inducted by the decade of either their graduation class year or year of service or impact on our community. The luncheon includes a silent auction and a chance to win valuable raffle prizes donated by our local community.
The Baler Ed Foundation's mission is to provide resources to support and enhance educational programs at SBHS. It does this by providing funds – annual mini-grants for individual teachers or departments. Examples include:
- STEM Club field trips
- Document cameras for English teachers
- Holocaust Storyteller Jerry Falek for both English and World Studies
- Scientific calculators for chemistry students
- Baler Gifted Cheer uniforms for students
- College field trip for Academy students
The Foundation raises money by selling Baler Bricks. The vision to sell 1,000 Baler Bricks for $1,000 each would establish an endowment fund of $1 million that in turn would allow the Foundation to give $50,000 in mini-grants annually in perpetuity. The Baler Bricks are displayed in the foyer of the main building.
Do You Have Your Alumni Pin?

Alumni Spotlight: Maureen Mattson Named Pittsburg District Teacher of the Year
San Benito High School alumna Maureen Mattson in May 2019 was named the Pittsburg Unified School District's Teacher of the Year. Mattson, a physical education teacher, also coaches students in the Unified Sports program, which pairs students with disabilities with non-disabled students to compete in sporting events.
Mattson's ongoing 34-year career at Pittsburg High parallels her father Bob's 38 years of experience; he was a physical education teacher in at San Benito High School and a school gymnasium on campus is named in his honor. Maureen was inducted into the SBHS Hall of Fame in 2012.
