Labor History on San Bruno Mountain
A Mountain Memory to Recall on Labor Day, September 5th
|
|
"Fallen Sierra and San Francisco Power Company High Tension Towers in San Bruno Mountains Tower Was Likely Dynamited by Labor Activists Connected to Strike | June 11, 1916"
|
|
A series of explosions that toppled electric towers on San Bruno Mountain in June of 1916 (targeting the Sierra and San Francisco Power Company which provided power to United Railroads) preceded the Preparedness Day Bombing in San Francisco. The two events were allegedly linked to the same culprits by the similar design of the bombs used.
An abandoned suitcase bomb was found near the railroad tracks, a few miles from the site of the tower explosions on San Bruno Mountain. It was said that this bomb "had the same earmarks of craftsmanship" as the one used in the Preparedness Day attack in San Francisco, the only difference being the inclusion of shrapnel in the latter bomb.
Side note: As I searched for and gathered newspaper clippings on this topic for the San Bruno Mountain Archives (see the "San Bruno Blasts" collection), I came across an article from 1971 noting the discovery of an old, partly buried bag of dynamite near Radio Road on San Bruno Mountain. I wondered if that bag of dynamite was abandoned material from that 1916 bombing...
This possibility was apparently not considered; no mention was made in the 1971 article of the 1916 transmission tower bombing. They had more modern towers on their mind—a sheriff's spokesman concluded, "as far as we know, there was apparently no indication the explosives were to be used in sabotaging the (radio and television) towers."

Interview by Ann Kircher
-
How do you know about San Bruno Mountain? I've lived in Brisbane for 17 years. My backyard is the San Bruno Mountain.
-
What do you most value about the Mountain? I love the mountain because it provides a home for the wildflowers, the native plants, and the wildlife.
-
How did you find out about Mission Blue Nursery? I found out about the nursery a few years back while talking to Ariel during a mountain clean-up.
-
What motivates you to come to the nursery on Wednesday mornings? I very much enjoy working with plants. The relaxing environment of getting to chat with the other volunteers while we work together is an added bonus.
-
What is your favorite thing about volunteering at the nursery? My favorite activities are gallon pot-ups and plucking dead leaves (it is so satisfying). Of course, it also makes me happy knowing that I'm helping to grow plants for our plant sales and/or mountain restoration.
-
What is your favorite native plant that grows on San Bruno Mountain? I have a few favorites, they are Dudleya farinosa, Lupine, Hummingbird Sage, and Iris.
-
What is your background? What kind of preparation and training do you have for volunteering at the nursery? I've always liked plants and have grown plants in my garden but had not had the chance to do anything professionally. It's been my hobby.
-
What did you do with your life before Mission Blue Nursery? I was working full-time as a computer programmer for over 20 years until I retired a few years ago.
-
Is there anything else you'd like to add? I'm very glad to be working alongside people with similar interests. Ever since I started volunteering there, I've been learning so much about the lifecycle of plants, how to properly grow plants, and a lot more. Ariel and Carly have been so knowledgeable, answering all of my questions.

Botanical Art Workshop at Mission Blue Nursery
A Wonderful Gathering Led by Artist Mary Harden
|
|
Botanical artist Mary Harden led a lovely workshop, and many attendees went home with the San Bruno Mountain plant they illustrated!
If you would be interested in attending future botanical art workshops at the nursery, please reply to this newsletter and let us know.
About Mary Harden:
Mary L. Harden is a passionate artist and a gifted educator. Among Mary's accomplishments is her work to inspire and motivate artists to "give back" and to build public awareness about the beauty and fragility of our plant kingdom. Curating educational exhibits for the Helen Crocker Russell Library of Horticulture at Strybing Arboretum and for the SF Conservatory of Flowers have furthered this work.
The creation of her highly original and successful Botanical Illustration Curriculum, which to date numbers 11 different courses of sequential curricula, began with her work for the SF Botanical Garden Society at Strybing Arboretum.
In 2018, Mary lead an exhibit featuring botanical artwork of San Bruno Mountain native plants.
