San Diego County Sheriff - August 2016
San Diego County Sheriff
Welcome to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department Newsletter

I begin this month's newsletter with a heavy heart.   We grieve with the men and women of the San Diego Police Department who recently suffered the loss of one officer and traumatic injury to another.

On behalf of the San Diego County Sheriff's Department, I want to extend my deepest condolences to the family of Officer Jonathan DeGuzman.  We also want to wish Officer Wade Irwin a full recovery.

We stand in solidarity with our colleagues at the San Diego Police Department and all who work in law enforcement.  While we struggle to make sense of these acts, we also must reaffirm our commitment to each other, our families and communities.

Stay safe,

Bill Gore, Sheriff
San Diego County
Unity Rally
Unity Rally
Sheriff Bill Gore recently joined San Diego County's law enforcement leaders, mayors, clergy and other community leaders for a Unity Gathering For Peace in Balboa Park.

The plea comes in the wake of recent deadly attacks against law enforcement across the U.S.  On July 28th, a San Diego Police Officer was killed and his partner was wounded during a stop near Downtown San Diego.

The Sheriff's Department prides itself on fostering positive relationships with the community.  We thank each and every one of you for your support.  We will always strive to make San Diego the safest urban county in the nation.

Check Fraud & Burglary Suspect

Do you recognize this man?  He is wanted in connection with a burglary and check fraud case in Encinitas.

On May 4th, the suspect cashed a check from Bank of America located at 1340 Encinitas Boulevard, Encinitas.

The bank contacted an Encinitas couple about the withdrawal. It was discovered the check was originally written and mailed to their landlord for rent.

The check cashed at the bank was made out to Jose Antonio Quintero, who was not the landlord. The signature line of the check also appeared to be forged.

If you recognize this man, you could be eligible for up to a $1,000 reward leading to a felony arrest. You can remain anonymous. Call Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477.
Burglary Suspect

The home burglary happened sometime between June 13th and June 16th while the a duplex in the 1900 block of Coast Boulevard in Del Mar was being fumigated.  More than $20,000 worth of electronics, jewelry, purses and credit cards were stolen.  The credit cards were then used at a Target, Walmart and Macy's in Chula Vista on June 15th and 16th.

The suspect has tattoos all over his arms and on the left side of his neck. He may be driving a 2000 gold Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Ugly Truth
Three people were arrested in June following a more than a year-long human trafficking investigation called Operation Tango. It all started with a tip from the North Coastal Sheriff's Station's Community Policing Unit. Operation Tango was led by the Sheriff's Department in partnership with the Human Trafficking Task Force.

The arrests show human trafficking is happening in San Diego.  The FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation) says the underground sex trade in our communities prostitutes as many as 8,100 men, women and children every year.

Labor Day Holiday
Labor Day
San Diego County Sheriff's Department Stations, Substations and Headquarters will be closed for the following federal holiday:

Monday, September 5
Labor Day

All detention facilities will remain open.  The closure to the public of business offices will not impact deputies in the field or employees scheduled for on-call.

For Emergencies Only
It's happened to all of us.  Whether it's a child playing with a phone, or keeping your finger on the "1" button too long, sitting with the phone in your pocket, or people calling about the same car crash then hanging up. If you accidentally dial 9-1-1, don't hang up.

Click on the above video to watch a public safety message from Sheriff Bill Gore.  You can also follow us on VIMEO.

Every call that comes into the Sheriff's Communication Center is taken seriously.  Under some circumstances, when there's no one on the other end of the line, dispatchers are required to find the caller to see if there's actually an emergency.

While the dispatcher is trying to make contact with the "hang-up" caller, another person with a true emergency could be put on hold.

You can save dispatchers that wasted time. If you call 9-1-1, even by mistake, stay on the line so dispatchers can verify you don't need help and they don't have to track you down.

Child Molester
San Marcos Child Molester
Take a good look at this surveillance photo.  Someone out there knows this man.

He is wanted on suspicion of groping an eight-year-old girl in San Marcos. It happened on Tuesday, June 21st between 7:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. at a laundromat in the 100 block of South Rancho Santa Fe Road in San Marcos.

The victim walked away from her mother to a nearby sink to wash her hands. A man came up behind her and lifted her up to help her. As he set her down, he inappropriately touched the girl over her clothing and then left the laundromat.

If you recognize this man or know his whereabouts, you can remain anonymous. Call Crime Stoppers at
(888) 580-8477.  You can be eligible for up to a $1,000 reward for information that leads to a felony arrest.

Senior Volunteer Of The Year
Bob Cebulski
Robert Cebulski (center) with Sheriff Bill Gore and members of the Sheriff's Command Staff and Senior Volunteer Patrol.

The Sheriff's Department wants to congratulate Fallbrook Senior Volunteer Patrol member Robert (Bob) Cebulski.  He was recently named Senior Volunteer of the Year by the San Diego Crime Commission.

Mr. Cebulski has been a Sheriff's Senior Volunteer since August 2005.  Since that time, he has become an invaluable member of the Fallbrook Sheriff's Substation.

His vast computer skills have allowed Cebulski to oversee the Fallbrook Senior Volunteer Patrol's IT/Training Program.  He also updated the station's You Are Not Alone (YANA) database.   The YANA program involves Senior Volunteers who visit homebound seniors on a weekly basis to make sure they are okay.

Congratulations Robert Cebulski on your well-deserved honor.
